Today’s Agenda
This Webinar is designed to help you understand:
1. Current Economic Development Trends
2. ArcGIS Solutions for Economic Development
Economic Development
Municipalities are constantly having to balance recruiting new businesses with retaining and expanding existing ones, all while meeting the changing needs of their community, region or province.
Challenges:
- Cost cutting and reduced budgets
- Ineffective use of data and resources
- Need to balance recruiting new businesses with retaining/expanding existing
- Fundamental changes in the Canadian/world economy
Impact on the entire business:
- Loss of existing and inability to attract new businesses = less tax $$$
- Lack of accessibility to stimulate innovation, create sustainability and resiliency
What are some of the Trends?
1. Regionalism
- Collaborating and cooperating with other local EDOs is the new normal
2. Business expansion/incubation
- Existing business continue to be the largest source of local job growth, much more than that attributable to new investment
3. Sustainability
- Fundamental goal for future economic development.
- Canada has three national objectives; clean environment, productive economy and strong community
What are some of the Trends?
4. Population
- Growth, aging and immigration
5. Reshoring manufacturing/focused industry
- Changing world economic conditions have made it economical to bring manufacturing operations back in some cases
