Hello, Church Friends.

My husband and I are moving to Huron the end of June and want to say good bye to all of you! We wish to be close to our son and his family and be on hand to watch our grandchildren grow.

I so enjoyed attending church and getting to know all of you. You are a positive and supportive community and I will miss your unique and joyous personalities. I pray for Pastor Jenene as she continues to lead you as disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. How blessed we all are to have her in our lives. We wish you the best and if you come to the State Fair, give us a call!

Warmly, Ken and MaryLou McGirr

MISSIONAL CHURCH CONSULTATION INITIATIVE (MCCI)

What Is MCCI?

Originally developed by the West Ohio Conference in 2010, the Missional Church Consultation

Initiative (MCCI) resources churches and their pastors with an intensive consultation and clergy coaching

model designed to intervene in local churches that are on the way “up” but not sure what should come next—

and have the pastoral leadership and potential resources to jumpstart a new life cycle of ministry fruitfulness.

Our congregation was selected as the Prairie Hills District church for participation in 2016.

How Does MCCI Work?

MCCI is comprised of a flight of churches each year that have been recommended by the cabinet as

meeting this specific criteria, and are then prayerfully selected and invited by the Bishop to participate. For

congregations that sign the MCCI covenant, a 2-3 year process is launched involving:

• Concentrated new ministry leadership skills training each month for the pastors in the

Initiative (80 plus hours total throughout the year, along with accountability for implementation back home

at their churches) that includes starting a congregational Breakthrough Prayer Initiative

• “Undercover Worshippers” who visit and worship at each of the churches in the MCCI, and

then provide extensive feedback about their experiences

• A thorough self-study completed by each church, including history, finances, staffing,

organization, ministry activities and demographic setting

• A two -day MCCI on-site weekend provided by the MCCI Consultation Team that

culminates in a consultation report with five unique “prescriptions” (recommendations), or next steps the

church needs to take to move from plateau/ decline into jumpstarting new fruitfulness.

If an MCCI church votes 75% or better to accept its prescriptions (via an official church conference),

the decision is made to go forward. The pastor leads the implementation of the prescriptions, with the

assistance of “prescription coaches” (ministry leaders who already have a successful track record in their own

setting with that prescription) to help guide and advise. The prescription coaches are underwritten by your

conference, and continue to guide the pastor and congregation for up to two years.

MCCI PROCESS REPORT – July 2018 Where Are We In The MCCI Process?

• On June 4, 2017, in a combined worship service, the congregation received the

consultation report with the five unique prescriptions (recommendations), or next steps for our

congregation. Copies of this document are available on the church website at www.sturgisumc.org/resources

or in the church office.

• In July of 2017, following 6 weeks of thought and prayer and 3 town hall meetings about

the process, the congregation voted to accept and begin implementation of the MCCI prescriptions that we

had received.

• Congregation members and attendees were immediately invited to participate in teams

which would focus on welcoming guests, updating signage, making changes to room layouts, broadening our

social media presence, visioning for ways the congregation can minister to the community and ways to bless

the community. These teams have been at work since the fall of 2017, implementing the recommendations

given and giving thought to the next steps that are needed to go forward. Three of the teams, the School

Partnership team, the Guest Welcome team and the Social Media team, continue to receive coaching to help

them develop long term strategies for the work they are doing.

• An addendum to the report included a recommendation for the congregation to transition

from the existing Administrative Council leadership model to a Leadership Team model. Members of the

existing Council felt this transition would be a positive and productive move and recommended going

forward with the transition for 2018.

• The Charge Conference voted to approve the transition and following training with the

coach provided through MCCI, the Leadership Team assumed oversight of the church’s administration in

2018. A copy of the Guiding Principles for the work of the Leadership Team, along with policies for Finances,

Staff/Parish, Operations and Nominations, is available in the church office.

• The members of the current Leadership Team are: Glea Beck (Lay Leader) , Mark Chaplin

(Staff/Parish Chair), Myrna Hill (Finance), Ashley Alsup (Operations), Lola Killam (Secretary), Ron Waterland

(Operations Chair), Kristi Ortiz (Member at Large), Ross Lamphere (Finance Chair), Beka Zerbst (Staff/Parish)

and Pastor Jenene Earl.

If you have questions about anything that is happening, please feel free to visit with Pastor Jenene

or any of the members of the Leadership Team.

If you have a concern that needs to be addressed by the Leadership Team, please speak with Pastor Jenene

or Lay Leader, Glea Beck, so we can address that concern at the next Leadership Team meeting.

Leadership Team meeting dates for the rest of 2018 are as follows: July 31, August 28, September

25, October 30, November 27, December 18. All meetings are 5:30-7:30 PM in the Conference Room.
