In 2009, USF won both games against the Aggies - 7-1 and 6-0. In 2010, USF hammered UC Da-vis in the only game the two teams played - 18-5. CAPTAIN AMeRICA: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer was named a second team All-American in Baseball America’s college preseason poll. The right-hander became the first Don to be named a preseason All-American since Tagg Bozied in 2000.

Zimmer had a terrific March, tossing back-to-back compete game shutouts against Hawaii and UCSB. Against the Rain-bows, Zimmer stuck out 11 and allowed only three hits en route to his first win of the 2012 season. On March 24, Zimmer blanked the Gauchos, striking out nine and walking only one to propel the Dons to a 2-0 victory.

Zimmer owns a 4-3 record with a 2.86 ERA. In his last outing against No. 30 Gonzaga, Zimmer went 8.0 strong innings, striking out 10 and walking only one en route to his fourth vic-tory of the season. The right-hander now owns a remarkable 75-to-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Zimmer’s 75 strikeouts, three complete games, and two shutouts rank first in the entire West Coast Conference. Zimmer’s 69.1 innings pitched ranks fifth in the WCC, while his 2.86 ERA ranks 10th.

H20 BoY: Junior reliever Elliott Waterman earned WCC Rawl-ings Pitcher of the Week honors for his 3 save weekend against Gonzaga. Waterman has been stellar for the Dons in 2012, posting six saves, just one shy of the all-time single season re-cord of seven owned by Patrick McGuigan. The 6-5, 230-pound lefty is 3-0 with a team-high six saves. “Proffesor Wat” as he’s reffered to by teammates owns a gaudy 1.24 ERA and a near-perfect 30-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 29.0 innings pitched. ARMS RACe: The Dons’ team ERA of 3.40 (145er, 383.2ip) ranks 5th in the WCC. The Dons’ 337 strikeouts rank first in the Con-ference as does their 337-to-122 strikeout-to-walk ratio. USF has four pitchers with an ERA lower than 2.00 and eight under 3.00. In fact, the Dons’ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starters each have ERAs below 3.00. Opponents are hitting just .245 against San Francisco this year.

AMAZING ABe: Redshirt sophomore Abe Bobb (4-4, 2.85 ERA) has been excellent as the Dons’ Saturday/Sunday starter. On April 1, Bobb shutout the No. 24 San Diego Toreros across 7.1 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked none en route to his fourth victory and WCC Pitcher of the Week hon-ors. Bobb’s four wins rank first on the team. The Denver, Colo-rado native has gone at least five innings in eight of his 10 starts and has lasted at least six innings in five of his starts. Bobb has shown impressive control of all of his pitches rack-ing up a 43-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

FIRST TIMe FoR eVeRYTHING: Four-year senior Mason Mo-rioka entered the 2012 season without a collegiate home run to his name. That changed on Opening Day, as Morioka took a 2-1 pitch from San Jose State reliever Kyle Hassna deep over the left field fence in the top of the ninth, to lengethen the Dons lead to 4-0. Morioka has started in 41 of the Dons’ 44 games this season all behind the plate and is San Francisco’s sixth-leading hitter with a .254 batting average. Morioka also ranks second on the team with 26 bases on balls and third with an .378 on-base percentage.

NIK’S NUMBeRS: Senior Nik Balog’s 28 RBIs lead the team this season and rank sixth in the entire WCC. The first baseman has 11 extra base hits this season, second on the team. The elder Balog heated up lately, tallying 11 RBIs in the last eight games, including a season-high five against LMU on April 14. Defen-sively, Balog has been nearly perfect at first base, amassing a pristine .997 fielding percentage (319 put outs and 22 assists against just one error). The Saratoga, Calif. native entered the 2012 season ranked second all-time in put outs at USF. Balog cemented his place in Dons history by recording 502 put outs - most all-time in a single season.

UP THe MIDDLe: The Dons return both of their starting middle infielders from a year ago in shortstop Aritz Garcia and second baseman Jason Mahood. Mahood came alive in the three-game series against LMU, racking up seven RBIs and going 5-for-13 (.385). “Hoody” has raised his batting average .46 points since the start of April and is now hitting .257 on the season. Mahood’s nine doubles and 21 RBIs rank first and second on the team, respectively. The second baseman’s defense has been stellar once again, as the junior owns a .994 fielding percentage.

HINKLe’S HeLP: Junior reliever Haden Hinkle has been one of the most dominant right-handed arms out of the bullpen for USF this year. Hinkle threw 3.1 hitless innings against Fresno State in San Francisco’s 6-1 win on March 11. Hinkle’s .157 batting average against rank first on the entire staff. The righty from Madera, CA has allowed only 18 hits in 31.1 innings pitched this year.

CeCILIo’S CoMe UP: Freshman Christian Cecilio notched his first collegiate victory in his second career start at USF, which came against Missouri on February 26 and helped complete the three-game series sweep of the Tigers. The left-hander was great against Fresno State on March 11, allowing one unearned run in 5.2 innings pitched. The San Jose, CA native has started 11 games on the season, which is the most of any Dons’ pitcher. Cecilio owns an impressive 27-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

ReMASTeReD: Senior lefty Jordan Remer entered the Dons record books last year, when he recorded four saves, tied for fifth all-time in the Dons’ single season books. Opposing hitters couldn’t touch the southpaw as he accumulated a .174 batting average against in 49.0 innings pitched. Remer has pitched well this season despite his 6.84 ERA as he owns a remarkable .159 batting average against in addition to 32 strikeouts in just 25.0 innings pitched. Remer came up clutch in Sunday’s series finale against Gonzaga, stranding runners on second and third with just one out in the eighth inning.

FINe FReSHMAN: Freshman DH Brendan Hendriks has performed well for the Dons in his first go around, hitting .312 (29-for-93) with an impressive .359 on-base percentage. The Canadian has started in 24 games this season primarily as the designated hitter against right-handed pitchers.

CHAVeZ CRUSHeS: Senior DH/C Matt Chavez leads the team with four long flys on the season. The designated hitter ranks second on the squad with a .413 slugging percentage and has 13 RBIs in just 80 at-bats. In fact, eight of Chavez’s 17 hits this season have gone for extra bases. Chavez has also caught behind the plate this season, a transition the senior worked on diligently throughout the offseason.

LoVeLY DAY: Senior right-hander Cameron Love has been one of the first arms out of the bullpen for Coach Giarratano in 2012. Love’s stingy 1.59 ERA ranks fourth on the team. Unfortunately for the Dons, Love suffered season-ending surgey on his foot after fielding a ground ball against LMU on April 14.

ZIMMeR BRoS.: Junior pitcher Kyle Zimmer is joined this year by his younger brother, Bradley, who has started in 34 of the Dons’ 44 games this year. Both Zimmers played their high school ball at La Jolla High School in San Diego, California. The promising young right fielder leads all freshman in starts, at-bats, doubles, triples, RBI, and extra base hits.
