User’s Manual Introduction Thank you for purchasing or trying out Recabinet. Our goal with this product is to empower musicians and producers with the ability to get full, album-quality guitar and bass tone direct. Recabinet doesn’t try to be all things to all people - it coexists in an ecosystem of great music equipment and software. What is Recabinet? Recabinet is a library of convolution impulse responses, and is compatible with a wide variety of convolution impulse response software plugins. These plugins are designed to run in a variety of recording software for PC and Mac. Some of this software is free, and in our testing, is just as good as the paid software for use with Recabinet. If you do not currently have recording software, we recommend Reaper for the PC, and GarageBand for the Mac. Reaper is free to try out, and inexpensive for non-commercial use. GarageBand is included with Macs made in the last few years. If you do not currently have a convolution impulse response plugin, we recommend keFIR for the PC, and LAConvolver for the Mac, both of which are free. Cabinets and Mics Recabinet is organized in 3 main folders, each containing a collection of impulse response files for use with a convolution impulse response plugin. For most of these plugins, you will use the “Other Hosts” version. For Altiverb and AxeFX, use the specific versions provided. Each subfolder represents a different real-world cabinet (with a silly nickname for legal reasons.) Cabinets • “Angora” - Line 6 Vetta 4×12 • “Damien” - Marshall 1936 2×12 • “Ghandi” - Mesa Standard/Oversize 4×12 • “Genzie” - Genz Benz G-Flex ported 2×12 • “Igor” - Krank Krankenstein 4×12 • “Kirby” - Carvin 4×12 British Series • “Manatee” - Ampeg SVT 8×10 Bass Cabinet (using Ampeg SVT Pro Classic power section) • “Sterling” - Marshall Hand Wired 4×12 (late 1960s reissue) • “Trapezoid” - Roland Micro Cube (using native power section) All 4x12 and 2x12 cabinets were powered using a Randall RT2/50 power amp, loaded with 6L6 and EL34 power tubes. They were sampled using 4 different microphones, listed below: Microphones • “57" - Shure SM57 - industry standard dynamic microphone, the most popular microphone for guitar recording. • “i5" - Audix i5 - modern industry standard dynamic microphone, for a full-range, aggressive response. • “4060" - Audio Technica 4060 - modern high-SPL condenser microphone, for warm, full-bodied tone. • “D6" - Audix D6 - modern kick drum mic, great for getting the low “cabinet rumble” tone as a blend-in with your primary tone. The “57” and “i5” mics were sampled in 4 different positions (cap, edge, cone, edge45), at 3 depths per position (on the grill, 1/2 inch away, and 1 inch away.) See the Microphone Positioning Diagram for a visual representation. All microphones were sampled using the amazing Universal Audio 2-610 mic preamp, with the exception of the beta “Ghandi” impulses, which were sampled using the stock mic preamps on a Presonus Firepod audio interface. File Naming Conventions Files are named according to the following conventions: [Power Tubes] [Mic] [Position] [Distance].[extension] For example: 6L6 57 cap grill.wav This means 6L6 power tubes, 57 mic, cap position, on the grill.

IntroductionThank you for purchasing or trying out Recabinet. Our goal with this product is to empower musicians and producers with the ability to get full, album-quality guitar and bass tone direct. Recabinet doesn’t try to be all things to all people - it coexists in an ecosystem of great music equipment and software.

What is Recabinet?Recabinet is a library of convolution impulse responses, and is compatible with a wide variety of convolution impulse response software plugins.

Cabinets and MicsRecabinet is organized in 3 main folders, each containing a collection of impulse response les for use with a convolution impulse response plugin. For most of these plugins, you will use the “Other Hosts” version. For Altiverb and AxeFX, use the specic versions provided.

Each subfolder represents a dierent real-world cabinet (with a silly nickname for legal reasons.)

Cabinets • “Angora” - Line 6 Vetta 4×12 • “Damien” - Marshall 1936 2×12 • “Ghandi” - Mesa Standard/Oversize 4×12 • “Genzie” - Genz Benz G-Flex ported 2×12 • “Igor” - Krank Krankenstein 4×12 • “Kirby” - Carvin 4×12 British Series • “Manatee” - Ampeg SVT 8×10 Bass Cabinet (using Ampeg SVT Pro Classic power section) • “Sterling” - Marshall Hand Wired 4×12 (late 1960s reissue) • “Trapezoid” - Roland Micro Cube (using native power section)

All 4x12 and 2x12 cabinets were powered using a Randall RT2/50 power amp, loaded with 6L6 and EL34 power tubes. They were sampled using 4 different microphones, listed below:

Microphones • “57" - Shure SM57 - industry standard dynamic microphone, the most popular microphone for guitar recording.

File Naming ConventionsFiles are named according to the following conventions:

[Power Tubes] [Mic] [Position] [Distance].[extension]

For example: 6L6 57 cap grill.wav

This means 6L6 power tubes, 57 mic, cap position, on the grill.

InstallationAltiverb

To install in Altiverb (the current version is 6.2 as of this writing) just drag the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder into your Altiverb impulse responses folder. Then, rescan your Altiverb impulses folder in the Altiverb plugin by clicking the + gadget at the lower right corner of the IR Browser pane, and selecting “Rescan IR Folder” from the popup menu.

If you cannot see or use the Recabinet impulses once the rescan is complete, make sure you have at least Altiverb version 6.2.0 installed, and that you are using Altiverb as a mono instance on a mono track. Recabinet’s impulses are mono, and Altiverb will hide them from you on a stereo track insert.

Although Recabinet impulses were sampled at loud volumes, Altiverb will load the impulses about -10db quieter than they should be. You can make up for this by turning up the Output Gain - there is no sonic drawback to this.

AxeFX

Follow the impulse installation procedure outlined in the AxeFX manual. Please note that Recabinet was not developed with the AxeFX in mind, and as such these impulses may have more tonal coloration than other impulses you are used to on the AxeFX. Recabinet plans to oer more specic AxeFX support in the future, for now enjoy the product and understand that the AxeFX version of Recabinet should be considered unsupported alpha software.

keFIR

Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. Rock out!

LAConvolver

Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. Rock out!

ProVerb (included with Digital Performer 6)

Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. Rock out!

Revalver Mk III

Add an instance of the RIR impulse loader inside Revalver. Then, Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. To get the sound of the speakers as we captured them, engage the high resolution switch, and turn down the crunch and distortion all the way on RIR. That being said, there are no rules, have fun!

SIR II

Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. Rock out!

Space Designer (included with Logic Studio)

Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. Rock out!

Voxengo Boogex

Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. Turn the “Tone” and “Drive” knobs all the way down to bypass Boogex’s preamp simulation (that is, unless you want to use Boogex as the preamp as well!) Adjust EQ and ltering to taste.

Voxengo Pristine Space

Simply load the impulse you want from within the “Recabinet 1.0x PC and Mac” folder. Pristine Space is a complex, serious plugin and we won’t attempt to document it here, since Voxengo’s manual does a ne job of that. :)
