Project Overview
USEReST Workshop - Naples, Italy - November 13, 2008
Scope & Objectives
Part of the European Space Agency Data User Element (DUE)
EO-based Inforamtion Services: Ground Deformations Surface Thermal Anomalies Volcanic Gas (SO2) emissions Volcanic Ash tracking
Main Purpose: “to define, implement and validate a volcanologic information system to support the volcanic observatories, civil protection agencies and the broader scientific community of volcanoes with validated EO products”.
Based on requirements provided by INGV-OV and a worldwide selection of volcanic observatories.
USEReST Workshop - Naples, Italy - November 13, 2008
Project Planning GlobVolcano Project has been kicked-off in February 2007
Phase 1 (Completed in June 2008)

GlobVolcano Data Processing System (1/3)
Deformation Mapping Service: Two different processing approaches are adopted in order to provide both global and detailed monitoring of the area of interest (Both processing approaches exploit Envisat ASAR data)
EarthView® Conventional DInSAR Technique (MDA Canada)
Alert level increase: temporal resolution of products can be increased by exploiting capability of ASAR sensor to image an area with different geometry
Fast deformation: it can supply users with interferograms providing useful information at least for a first qualitative analysis
PSINSARTM Permanent Scatterers (T.R.E. Italy)
High accurate deformation estimation (APS estimation and removal) for a set radar targets exhibiting a coherence level constant in time
Monitoring of the temporal evolution of the deformation over long time period
USEReST Workshop - Naples, Italy - November 13, 2008
Two software tools are adopted for the implementation of the service:
MyVOL for high resolution multispectral EO data (IES Consulting) MyMOD for low-spatial resolution/high-temporal resolution multispectral EO data
(IES Consulting)
GlobVolcano Data Processing System (2/3)
Surface Thermal Anomalies Service Systematic Synergetic Merge of :
High spatial resolution satellite data acquired over long revisit intervals by ASTER (onboard TERRA) and HRVIR or HRGT (onboard SPOT-4 and -5).
Low spatial resolution satellite data acquired with daily frequency by MODIS (onboard TERRA and AQUA).
The combined use of these instruments allows increasing frequency of observation and level of detail
USEReST Workshop - Naples, Italy - November 13, 2008
GlobVolcano Data Processing System (3/3) Volcanic Gas Emission (SO2) Service is provided by a link to GSE-PROMOTE-(SACS)
Purpose: deliver Near-Real-Time EO-base SO2 measurements related to volcanic eruptions useful to assess possible impacts of volcanic eruptions on public safety
The service is focused on the delivery of SO2 data derived from different satellite instruments:
Envisat SCIAMACHY (BIRA IASB Belgium) AURA OMI (KNMI The Netherlands) MetOp-A GOME-2 (DLR Germany)
Volcanic Ash Tracking Service is provided by a link to GSE-PROMOTE-(SACS)
Purpose: track the ash injected into the atmosphere during a volcanic eruption.
The service is accomplished by using a proper RGB composite with BTD (Brightness Temperature Differences) relative to SEVIRI-MSG Infrared channels: IR8.7, IR10.8 and IR12.0 (CGS - Italy)
USEReST Workshop - Naples, Italy - November 13, 2008
GlobVolcano Information Service
The GlobVolcano Information Service is the product provision infrastructure of the GlobVolcano Information System
The GlobVolcano Information Service includes the following elements
GlobVolcano Products Archives
Functionalities: Web Map Service (WMS), product delivery / downloading
GlobVolcano Metadata Catalogue
Functionality: Catalogue Service for Web (CS-W)
GlobVolcano User Interface (GVUI)
Front end for the users, Based on Virtual Earth platform
USEReST Workshop - Naples, Italy - November 13, 2008
GlobVolcano User Interface
Two different points of access can be distinguished:
Public User Interface Not Authorised Users
Private User Interface Authorised Users (GlobVolcano Users)
USEReST Workshop - Naples, Italy - November 13, 2008
GVUI – Public User Interface
