(NFPA)andCanadianElectricalCoderecommendsthatCOalarmsbeinstalledoneverylevelandinthecentral

locationoutsideeachbedroom.Foraddedprotection,installadditionalCOalarmsineverybedroom.

NOTE:Foraddedprotection,installanadditionalsmoke/COalarmatleast20feet(6meters)awayfromthefurnace

Where Not to InstallDo Not Place Your Smoke & CO Alarm:• Ingarages,furnacerooms,crawlspacesandunfinishedattics.Avoidextremelydusty,dirtyorgreasyareas.

• Wherecombustionparticlesareproduced.Combustionparticlesformwhensomethingburns.Areastoavoidincludepoorlyventilatedkitchens,garages,andfurnacerooms.Keepunitsatleast20feet(6meters)fromthesourcesofcombustionparticles(stove,furnace,waterheater,spaceheater)ifpossible.Inareaswherea20foot(6meter)distanceisnotpossible–inmodular,mobile,orsmallerhomes,forexample–itisrecommendedthesmokealarmbeplacedasfarfromthesefuel-burningsourcesaspossible.Theplacementrecommendationsareintendedtokeepthesealarmsatareasonabledistancefromafuel-burningsource,andthusreduce“unwanted”alarms.Unwantedalarmscanoccurifasmokealarmisplaceddirectlynexttoafuel-burningsource.Ventilatetheseareasasmuchaspossible.

• Within5feet(1.5meters)ofanycookingappliance.Inairstreamsnearkitchens.Aircurrentscandrawcookingsmokeintothesmokesensorandcauseunwantedalarms.

• Inextremelyhumidareas.Thisalarmshouldbeatleast10feet(3meters)fromashower,sauna,humidifier,vaporizer,dishwasher,laundryroom,utilityroom,orothersourceofhighhumidity.

• Indirectsunlight.

• Inturbulentair,nearceilingfansoropenwindows.BlowingairmaypreventCO/smokefromreachingthesensors.

• Inareaswheretemperatureiscolderthan40˚F(4.4˚C)orhotterthan100˚F(37.8˚C).Theseareasincludenonairconditionedcrawlspaces,unfinishedattics,uninsulatedorpoorlyinsulatedceilings,porches,andgarages.

• Ininsectinfestedareas.Insectscanclogtheopeningstosensingchamber.

IfreplacinganexistingFirstAlertalarmandthepowerconnectorisingoodworkingconditionskiptothe

“InstallingOnelinkSafe&Sound”instructions.

Step 1 Usingwirenuts,connectthewhitewireonthepowerconnectortotheneutralwireinthejunctionbox,connecttheblackwireonthepowerconnectortothehotwireinthejunctionbox,connecttheorangewireonthepowerconnectortotheinterconnectwireinthejunctionbox,youwillneedtosplicetheorangecasingoffbeforeconnecting.

Step 2 Movetothe“InstallingOnelinkSafe&Sound”instructions.

If installing the First Alert power connector:

Step 1 Connecttheblackendoftheappropriateadapterplugsuppliedwiththeunittotheexistingpowerconnector.

NOTE: TheremaynotbeenoughroomfortheAdapterPlugandadditionalwiringtofitinthejunctionbox.

Ifnot,theoldpowerconnectormustberemovedandreplacedwiththeFirstAlertPowerConnector.

Step 2 Movetothe“InstallingOnelinkSafe&Sound”instructions.

If replacing a non-First Alert alarm use one of the other adapters supplied with the unit:

RESTORE POWER.Ifanyunitwithininterconnectedalarmsdoesnotalarm,replaceitimmediately.

Stand-Alone Alarm Only:• Ifyouareonlyinstallingonesmokealarm,restorepowertothejunctionbox.

Interconnected Units Only:• Ifyouareinterconnectingmultiplesmokealarms,repeatsteps1-5foreachsmokealarmintheseries.

Whenyouarefinished,restorepowertothejunctionbox.

Step 1 ConnectthepowerconnectortotheFirstAlert®alarm.

Step 2 Checkallconnections.Makesureallplugsarecompletelyconnectedandsnappedtogether.EnsuretheAdapterPlugissecurelyconnectedtotheexistingPowerConnector.

NOTE: Ifyouneedtoremovethepowerconnector,turnPOWER OFFfirst.Insertaflatscrewdriverbladebetweenthe

powerconnectorandthesecuritytabinsidethepowerinputblock.Gentlyprybackthetabandpulltheconnectorfree.

Step 3 Lineupthetabsontheunitwiththenotchesonthemountingbracket.

Step 4 Installthebaseofthealarmtothemountingbracket,applyfirmpressure,andturnclockwiseuntilasingle,non-repeatingaudiblechirpisheard.

Step 5 Restorepowertothejunctionbox.

NOTE: Afteryouactivatethealarmforthefirsttime,theColorIndicatorRingwillpowerupandthealarm

willwelcomeyou.Toprogramyouralarm,followtheinstructionsprovidedintheOnelinkHomeApp.

Step 6 Testeachalarm.Pressandholdthetestbuttonuntiltheunitalarms.Whentestingaseriesofinterconnectedunitsyoumusttesteachunitindividually.Makesureallunitsalarmwheneachoneistested.

NOTE: Removingthealarmfromthemountingbracketwillturnthealarmoff.

Interconnected Units Must Meet All of the Following Requirements:• Amaximumof12compatibleunitsmaybeinterconnected(Maximumof12smokealarms).

• Thesamefuseorcircuitbreakermustpowerallinterconnectedunits.

• Thetotallengthofwireinterconnectingtheunitsshouldbelessthan1000feet(300meters).ThistypeofwireiscommonlyavailableatHardwareandElectricalSupplystores.

• Allwiringmustconformtoalllocalelectricalcodes,NFPA70(NEC)andCanadianElectricalCode.RefertoNFPA72,NFPA101,CanadianElectricalCode,and/oryourlocalbuildingcodeforfurtherconnectionrequirements.

When the Alarm SoundsWhat to Do If Your Smoke Alarm Sounds• Iftheunitalarmsandyouarenottestingtheunit,itiswarningyouofapotentiallydangeroussituationthat

requiresyourimmediateattention.NEVERignoreanyalarm.Ignoringthealarmmayresultininjuryordeath.

• Iftheunitalarmsgeteveryoneoutofthehouseimmediately.

What to Do in Case of a Fire (including but not limited to):• Don’tpanic;staycalm.Followyourfamilyescapeplan.

• Getoutofthehouseasquicklyaspossible.Don’tstoptogetdressedorcollectanything.

• Feeldoorswiththebackofyourhandbeforeopeningthem.Ifadooriscool,openitslowly.Don’topenahotdoor.Keepdoorsandwindowsclosed,unlessyoumustescapethroughthem.

• Coveryournoseandmouthwithacloth(preferablydamp).Takeshort,shallowbreaths.

• Meetatyourplannedmeetingplaceoutsideyourhome,anddoaheadcounttomakesureeverybodygotoutsafely.CalltheFireDepartmentassoonaspossiblefromoutside.Giveyouraddress,thenyourname.

• Nevergobackinsideaburningbuildingforanyreason.

• ContactyourFireDepartmentforideasonmakingyourhomesafer.

What to Do if the CO Alarm Sounds1. PresstheTest/Silencebutton(OnApporonunit).

2. Callyouremergencyservices,FireDepartmentor911.

3. Immediatelymovetofreshair—outdoorsorbyanopendoororwindow.Doaheadcounttocheckthatallpersonsareaccountedfor.Donotre-enterthepremises,ormoveawayfromtheopendoororwindowuntiltheemergencyservicesresponderhasarrived,thepremiseshavebeenairedout,andyourCOalarmremainsinitsnormalcondition.

4. Afterfollowingsteps1-3,ifyourCOalarmreactivateswithina24-hourperiod,repeatsteps1-3andcallaqualifiedappliancetechniciantoinvestigateforsourcesofCOfromfuel-burningequipmentandappliances,andinspectforproperoperationofthisequipment.Ifproblemsareidentifiedduringthisinspectionhavetheequipmentservicedimmediately.Noteanycombustionequipmentnotinspectedbythetechnician,andconsultthemanufacturers’instructions,orcontactthemanufacturersdirectly,formoreinformationaboutCOsafetyandthisequipment.Makesurethatmotorvehiclesarenot,andhavenot,beenoperatinginanattachedgarageoradjacenttotheresidence.

The Alarm Silence FeatureThisfeatureisintendedtotemporarilysilencethehornwhileyouidentifyandcorrecttheproblem.Donot

usetheSilenceFeatureinemergencysituations.ItwillnotcorrectaCOproblemorextinguishafire.The

SilenceFeaturecantemporarilyquietanunwantedalarmforseveralminutes.Youcansilencethissmoke/

COalarmbypressingtheTest/Silencebuttononthesideofalarmforatleast3-5secondsorviatheOnelink

HomeApp.AftertheTest/Silencebuttonisreleased,theRedLEDstopsduringthesilencemode.

What is CO?CarbonMonoxide(CO)isaninvisible,odorless,tastelessgasproducedwhenfossilfuelsdonotburn

completely,orareexposedtoheat(usuallyfire).ElectricalappliancestypicallydonotproduceCO.

These Fuels Include: Wood,coal,charcoal,oil,naturalgas,gasoline,kerosene,andpropane.

CommonappliancesareoftensourcesofCO.Iftheyarenotproperlymaintained,areimproperlyventilated,

ormalfunction,COlevelscanrisequickly.COisarealdangernowthathomesaremoreenergyefficient.“Air-

tight”homeswithaddedinsulation,sealedwindows,andotherweatherproofingcan“trap”COinside.
