5. MEASURING MODESThere are four different ignition systemparameters that can be selected formeasurement, dependingontheengine’signitionsystem:•EngineRPM.

•Sparkburn(firing)time.

•Sparkplugvoltage.

•Dwellangles(forignitionsystemsequippedwithhighvoltagesparkplugwires).

•Primaryignitioncoilcurrentramptime(forcoilonplugandcoilnearplugignitionsystems).

5.1 Engine RPMMeasuresengineRPM(revolutionsperminute)in2and4strokeengines,andmaybeusedincombinationwithothermeasurementstoevaluateignitionsystem performanceatdifferentenginespeeds.

5.2 Spark burn (firing) timeThe spark burn time, also called “firing time”, is themeasurement of the period fromthemomentasparkisinitiateduptothepointwhenit isextinguished,andisthemostindicativemeasurementofperformanceoftheignitionsystem.Abnormallylongorshortburntimesmayindicatesomeproblemintheignitionmodule,sparkplug,fuelmixture,cylindercompression,etc.

5.3 Spark plug voltageSparkplugvoltagevaluesareusefulforcomparingtheperformanceoftheignitionsystembetweencylinders.Thismaybeusedtodiagnosecommonproblemslikemisfires,brokensparkplugwires,etc.Sparkplugpeakvoltagesmayvarywidely,arelessconsistentandnotalwaysindicativeofaproperlyworkingignitionsystem.Ontheotherhand,observationofthesparkplugvoltagewaveformortrendmayproveusefulindiagnosingignitionandmechanicalproblems.

5.4 Dwell angle (for ignition systems using spark plug wires only)Dwellangleisameasurementoftheangleofrotationofthecrankshaft,betweenthemomentinwhichtheprimaryoftheignitioncoilisenergized(e.g.pointcontactsclosed)andthesparkisgenerated(e.g.pointcontactsopened).Itsmainuseisindeterminingifthereisenoughangle(ortime)toenergizetheprimaryoftheignition,andnotsomuchastocausetheignitioncoiltooverheatandfail.DwellanglesarespecifiedforaparticularengineandRPM,andusuallyadjustedinthemechanicaldistributor/pointassembly.

5.5 Current ramp time (for coil on plug and coil near plug only)Ramp time ismeasured fromwhen theprimary coil current first begins to increase towhenitstopsincreasing.Thecurrentmaystopincreasingbecausethecoilhasreacheditssaturationpoint,oritisinterruptedtogenerateaspark.

Ramp timemeasurementsareuseful fordiagnosingproblems in theprimarycircuitoftheignitionmodule.Abnormallylongramptimesmayindicateexcessiveprimarycircuitresistance,lowinputvoltage,thatthewrongmoduleisinstalled,etc.Shorterthannormalramptimesmayindicateashortedprimarycoil,thatthewrongmoduleisinstalled,etc.

7. MEASUREMENT PROCEDURES

CAUTIONTo avoid personal injuries and damage to the instrument carefully inspect thespark plug wires, distributor cap, ignition coil , ignitionmodule, and all otherignition system parts for damage or leaks, and avoid using this instrument incase any damage or leaks are found. Never touch the capacitive pick-up or flexible probe during a test. Wear insulating gloveswhenworking around highvoltage, and hot parts, and keep away frommoving parts (fan, drive belts, etc)and hot objects (exhaustmanifold and pipes, muffler, catalytic converter, etc.)

7.1 Flexible probe and pick-up setupThisinstrumentissuppliedwithaflexibleprobe,andtwotypesofpick-upsensors:

NOTES

• The position of the pick-up and the particular design of the ignitionmodulemayaffect the signal’s shapeshownwhen thewaveformdisplay is selected. Inorder tocomparewaveformsbetweenseveralcylinders’ignitionmodules,theplacementofthepick-uprelativetotheignitionmoduleshouldbekeptasconsistentaspossibleforallthemeasurements.

•In someengines, the ignitionmodulesare located very close together, and in rareoccasions this could cause the instrument’s pick-up to detect signals fromnearbymodules,leadingtoinconsistentmeasurements.Thiscanusuallybesolvedbychangingtheplacementororientationofthepick-upontheignitionmodule.

NOTES• Theabsolutesparkplugvoltagereadingwilldependonthepositionof thepick-up,theparticularcharacteristicsofthewire,etc..Thereforetheplacementofthepick-uprelativetothewireshouldbekeepasconsistentaspossibleforallthemeasurementsinordertocomparevoltagereadingsbetweenseveralcylinders’sparkplugwires.

•Sparkburntime,dwellangleandRPMmeasurementsarenotsensitivetotheexactpositionofthepick-uprelativetothesparkplugwire,butthepick-upmustbepositionedsotheinstrumentiscapableofdetectingthesignal.

• When several spark plug wires are routed or bunched close together, the capacitivepick-upmayreceivesignalsfromtwoormorewiressimultaneously,whichcouldcauseerroneousmeasurements.Inthesesituationsitisnecessarytoseparatethewireundermeasurementfromtheothers,inordertoreduceinterferenceandobtainanaccuratemeasurement.
