The UID course/module• Emphasis in design is shifting toward solving the question of what should be

designed rather than only dealing with challenges of polished design briefs • Traditional designerly problem-solving and novel approaches for putting users

at the very centre of design – for finding inspiration from and with them* – are applied to discover and describe emerging practices and opportunities

• UID projects do not produce final designs but instead propose decision-making options and stimuli for a range of different business and artistic purposes

• Objectives include… – understand the aims of concept design– learn user centred concept design process– learn to gather and use user and contextual information with approaches such as

ethnographic observation and self-documentation– learn to interpret qualitative user data for design purposes and to link user information with

designerly problem solving– learn to generate, present and evaluate concept designs– practice cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural co-operation/team work

*‘User inspired’ = a creative/inventive/imaginative role for designers

How things will work

• Module continues until Friday, 20 December (final presentations on 18.12, last day of class and feedback to presentations on 20.12)

• Students work in seven teams of 4-5 persons*• ≈40h/week with the project (including time in class,

of course)• Contact teaching on Tuesday mornings (and a couple

of Tuesday afternoons), all day on Wednesdays, and on Fridays (most Fridays will be devoted exclusively to tutoring)

*We will present information on who the teams are later this morning

How things will work: Team work (concept design)

• You will need to communicate

the phenomena

the user inspired design process (methods, focus, questions, target group)

findings and insights (overview, personas, …)

How things will work: Learning diary• A personal weekly report/reflection about UID13 project• Reflect on your own learning process, be aware of what you

have learned and need to learn; help instructors develop the course; be part of course evaluation; keep your eyes open – raise awareness of subjective experiences related to the course– What has been done and what is on-going – Reflections on literature, web sources, and other information about the topic –

including expectations, questions, insights; problems in understanding the course objectives, problems in motivation; problems in group work

– If you have questions, it would be good to note how you plan to find the answers, and if you encounter problems, it would be good to suggest practical solutions you plan to try

– Text, mind maps, drawings, sketches, quotations

How things will work: Individual assignment• Should reflect on the literature through a chosen

perspective/theory/ framework and consider the experiences/phenomena/methods that are related to the team’s project

• A minimum of 5 references are needed• Structure (roughly): introduction with the objective, relevant

research on the topic, empirical findings, discussion, conclusions• The format can be:

– 3-4 page article (PINC conference template; language/English)– 2D visual material (i.e., info graphic), and 2 page descriptive text– 3D object (i.e., a table, or wardrobe), and 2 page descriptive text

How things will work: Literature review and workshop

• Research papers on UID as well as literature on the theme will be assigned to each team (total per team = 4/5, depending on # team members)

• The members of the team decide who will review what paper – one paper review per member

• Each member will write a short abstract of the paper and be prepared to deliver the abstract to the team and the course

• The team will decide on a single paper to present as a team for discussion and reflection in the workshop

• The workshop will involve all the teams

The theme

Themes for UID are intentionally elusive – they point toward a design space, but do not indicate what could be done in that space

Death and dying … and design

Page 13: User Inspired Design 2013 Jack Whalen Yiying Wu

Death and dying … and design

• Acknowledging death as part of our life and work

• On the surface, design is about creating useful objects and experiences – but great design seeks to create meaning and interaction

• The hidden benefits of unhiding death…
