1. Ever onward, O my people,Let the Kingdom tidings go.

Tremble not before our foe.Let all lovers of truth know

That my reigning Son, Christ Jesus,To the earth has cast the foe,

Soon to bind the Devil, Satan,Letting all his victims go.

(CHORUS)

Fear them not, O my beloved,Though their boasting threats may fly.

I will keep my faithful servantAs the apple of my eye.

2. Even though your foes are many,Though they threaten and revile,

Though they flatter and they smile,To mislead and to beguile.

Fear them not, my faithful warriors,Nor their persecution’s heat,

For I will preserve the faithfulTill the vict’ry is complete.

(Chorus)

33 Fear Them Not!(Matthew 10:28)

3. Never fear you are forgotten;I am still your strength and shield.

Though you die upon the field,Even death to me will yield.

Fear them not who kill the bodyBut cannot destroy the soul.

To the end may you be faithful;I will bring you to your goal!

prophet. Jeremiah had been carrying a wooden yoke tosignify coming under the yoke of Babylon; Hananiahgot violent and broke the yoke. Who could know whatHananiah would do next? So, what did Jeremiah do? Weread: “The prophet proceeded to go his way.” Yes, Jere-miah left the scene. Later, at Jehovah’s direction, he re-turned and told Hananiah what God would bring about—bondage to the king of Babylon for the Jews and deathfor Hananiah.—Jer. 28:1-17.

12 It is clear from this inspired account that in preach-ing, we do well to couple our boldness with sound judg-ment. If at one home someone refuses to accept Scrip-tural reasoning and becomes angry, even threateningviolence, we can excuse ourselves courteously and moveon to another house. There is no need to have a heatedargument with anyone regarding the good news of theKingdom. By keeping ourselves “restrained under evil,”we leave the wayopen to help the householder at a morefavorable time.—Read 2 Timothy 2:23-25; Prov. 17:14.

“DO NOT BE AFRAID”13 Trueworshippers were affected by the appalling con-

ditions that prevailed before Jerusalem’s destruction in607B.C.E. You can thus understand why God told Jeremi-ah: “Do not be afraid.” (Jer. 1:8; Lam. 3:57) And Jehovahhad him tell others of his people the same encouragingwords. (Read Jeremiah 46:27.) What insight can we gain

13. Why did Jehovah tell Jeremiah: “Do not be afraid,” and whyshould we consider this?

Why is trust in Jehovah so important as we preach thegood news? Why should we balance boldness with goodjudgment?

from this? In this dangerous time of the end, we couldoccasionally feel fear. At such times, will we listen to Je-hovah, who in effect is telling us: “Do not be afraid”? Ear-lier in this volume, we considered howGod sustained Jer-emiah during that truly fearful time. Let us briefly reviewwhat happened, in order to see a lesson in it for us.

14 As the Babylonians tightened their grip on Jerusa-lem, hunger overtook the people. Soon many were with-out food. (Jer. 37:21) As if the famine were not enough,Jeremiah was trapped in a place that could becomehis grave. The princes of Judah had pressed weak-willedKing Zedekiah to acquiesce. Then they had Jeremiahthrown into a deep cistern. There was no water in it, justa lot of mire. As Jeremiah began sinking into the mud, hecould see no human way out. If you had been in that sit-uation, would you not have felt some fear?—Jer. 38:4-6.

15 Though he was a mortal like us, Jeremiah trusted Je-hovah’s word that He would never abandon him. (ReadJeremiah 15:20, 21.) Did Jehovah reward that trust? Weknow for a fact that he did. God moved Ebed-melech todefy the princes and rescue Jeremiah. With the king’spermission, Ebed-melech pulled the prophet up out ofthe cistern, rescuing him from death in that muddydeep.—Jer. 38:7-13.

16 Even when Jeremiah was back standing on sol-id ground, he was not out of danger. Pleading in Jere-miah’s behalf, Ebed-melech had told the king: “He willdie where he is because of the famine. For there is nobread anymore in the city.” (Jer. 38:9) Food was so scarcein Jerusalem that people were resorting to cannibalism.

14, 15. (a) In what dangerous situation did Jeremiah find himself?(b) How did Jehovah fulfill his promise to protect Jeremiah?16. From what dangers did Jehovah rescue his loyal ones?

“I Cannot Keep Silent” 189

Page 6: UseOurWebSitetoTeach YourChildrenda-ip.getmyip.com/pdf/Study prep/2013/42 Mid-Week Meeting File 10-21-13.pdf2013 Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Our Kingdom Ministry

Yet, Jehovah again intervened to save his prophet. AndJeremiah passed on to Ebed-melech a guarantee of pro-tection from Jehovah. (Jer. 39:16-18) Jeremiah had notforgotten God’s assurance: “I am with you to deliveryou.” (Jer. 1:8) With Almighty God guarding those twoloyal men, neither human enemies nor hunger wouldfinish them off. They escaped death in that doomed city. What is the point? Jehovah promised protection and ful-filled his promise.—Jer. 40:1-4.

17 The fulfillment of Jesus’ prophecy about the con-clusion of the system of things is moving inexora-bly toward its climax. In the near future, there will oc-cur “signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earthanguish of nations, not knowing the way out . . . whilemen become faint out of fear and expectation of thethings coming upon the inhabited earth.” (Luke 21:25,26) We must wait to see what form those signs will takeand what terror they produce among many. No mat-ter what develops, though, you need never doubt Jeho-vah’s ability and desire to save his people. The out-

come for those who do not have his favor, however, will be quite different. (Read Jeremiah 8:20; 14:9.) Evenif it seems that his servants are in a condition as hope-less as the dank, dark bottom of a cistern, he can rescuethem! God’s words to Ebed-melech will apply to his peo-ple: “ ‘I shall without fail furnish you an escape, and bythe sword you will not fall; and you will certainly cometo have your soul as a spoil, because you have trusted inme,’ is the utterance of Jehovah.”—Jer. 39:18.

WORDS WRITTEN FOR YOU18 “To all those to whom I shall send you, you

should go; and everything that I shall command you,you should speak.” (Jer. 1:7) Jeremiah’s life changed for-ever when he heard that command from God. From thatmoment forward, his overwhelming concern was to an-nounce “the word of Jehovah.” That phrase appears re-peatedly throughout the book of Jeremiah. In the lastchapter, Jeremiah relates the capture of Jerusalem andthe exiling of its last king, Zedekiah. Yes, Jeremiah con-tinued teaching and exhorting the people of Judah toobey Jehovah until events made it clear that his workwas complete.

19 There are many parallels between Jeremiah’s assign-ment and the public ministry of Jehovah’s Witnesses to-day. Like him, you serve the true God during a time ofjudgment. Other responsibilities require some of yourtime and energy; yet the preaching of the good news

(b) Whatlink is there between the preaching work and finding joy and con-tentment? (c) How has considering the books of Jeremiah andLamentations affected you?

is by far the most significant work you can do in thissystem of things. By means of it, you exalt God’s greatname and accept his absolute right and authority asUniversal Sovereign. (Read Lamentations 5:19.) You alsodemonstrate outstanding love for neighbor by helpingothers to know the true God and his requirements forlife.—Jer. 25:3-6.

20 Regarding the work that Jehovah gave him to do,Jeremiah said: “Your word becomes to me the exultationand the rejoicing of my heart; for your name has beencalled upon me, O Jehovah God of armies.” (Jer. 15:16)Such rejoicing and contentment are set before all todaywhose hearts move them to speak on behalf of the trueGod. You thus have good reason to keep proclaiming Je-hovah’s message, as did Jeremiah.

How can the examples of Jeremiah and Ebed-melech helpyou to be courageous? What quality of Jeremiah do youwant to imitate as you preach?

1581 1 THESSALONIANS 1:8–2:178 The fact is, not only has

the word of Jehovah sound-ed out from you in Mac·e·doni·aand A·chaia but your faith inGod has spread abroad in everyplace, a so that we do not need tosay anything. 9 For they them-selves keep reporting about ourfirst contact with you and howyou turned to God from youridolsb to slave for a livingand true God, 10 and to waitfor his Son from the heavens, cwhom he raised up from thedead, namely, Jesus, who res-cues us from the wrath that iscoming.d

2 You yourselves surely know, brothers, that our visit to

you has not been without re-sults.e 2 For although we hadfirst suffered and been insolent-ly treated in Phi·lippi, f as youknow, we mustered up bold-ness by means of our God totell you the good news of Godg

in the face of much opposi-tion. 3 For the exhortation wegive does not spring from erroror from uncleanness or with de-ceit, 4 but just as we havebeen approved by God to be en-trusted with the good news, sowe speak to please, not men, butGod, who examines our hearts.h

5 In fact, you know that wenever used flattering speech orput on any false front withgreedy motives; i God is witness!6 Nor have we been seeking glo-ry from men, either from youor from others, though we couldbe an expensive burden as apos-tles of Christ. j 7 On the con-trary, we became gentle in yourmidst, as when a nursing moth-er tenderly cares for her ownchildren. 8 So having tenderaffection for you, we were de-termined to impart to you, not

only the good news of God butalso our very selves,a becauseyou became so beloved to us.b

9 Surely you remember, broth-ers, our labor and toil. We wereworking night and day, so that wewould not put an expensive bur-den on any one of you,c when wepreached the good news of Godto you. 10 You are witnesses,God is also, of how loyal and righ-teous and blameless we behavedtoward you believers. 11 Youwell know that we kept exhort-ing and consoling you and bear-ing witness to each one of you, djust as a fathere does his chil-dren, 12 so that you would goon walking worthily of God,f whois calling you to his Kingdomg andglory.h

13 Indeed, that is why wealso thank God unceasingly, i be-cause when you received God’sword, which you heard from us,you accepted it not as the wordof men but, just as it truthful-ly is, as the word of God, whichis also at work in you believers.14 For you, brothers, becameimitators of the congregationsof God in union with Christ Je-sus that are in Ju·dea, becauseyou suffered at the hands ofyour own countrymen j the samethings that they also are suffer-ing at the hands of the Jews,15 who even killed the Lord Je-susk and the prophets and per-secuted us. l Furthermore, theyare not pleasing God, but areagainst the interests of all men,16 as they try to prevent usfrom speaking to people of thenations so that these might besaved.m In this way they alwaysfill up the measure of their sins. But his wrath has at last comeupon them.n

17 But when we were sepa-rated from you, brothers, forjust a short time (in person, not

1 THESSALONIANS 2:18–4:7 1582in our hearts), because of ourstrong desire, we made everyeffort to see you in person.18 For this reason we want-ed to come to you, yes I, Paul, tried not just once but twice;yet Satan cut across our path.19 For what is our hope orjoy or crown of exultation be-fore our Lord Jesus at his pres-ence? Is it not in fact you?a

20 You certainly are our gloryand joy.

3 So when we could bear it nolonger, we thought it best to

stay on alone in Athens;b 2 andwe sent Timothy,c our broth-er and God’s minister in thegood news about the Christ,to make you firm and comfortyou regarding your faith, 3 sothat no one might be shakenby these tribulations. For youyourselves know that we cannotavoid suffering such things.d

4 For when we were with you,we used to tell you in advancethat we would suffer tribulation, and that is what has happened, just as you know.e 5 That iswhy, when I could bear it no lon-ger, I sent to learn of your faith-fulness, f in case somehow theTempterg might have temptedyou, and our labor might haveturned out to be in vain.

6 But Timothy has just nowcome to us from youh and hasgiven us the good news aboutyour faithfulness and love, thatyou always continue to remem-ber us fondly and that you longto see us in the same way aswe also do you. 7 That is why, brothers, in all our distress andtribulation, we have been com-forted because of you and thefaithfulness you demonstrate. i

11 Now may our God and Fa-ther himself and our Lord Je-sus make a way for us to cometo you. 12 Moreover, may theLord cause you to increase, yes,to abound in love for one anoth-erb and for all, just as we do foryou, 13 so that he may makeyour hearts firm, blameless inholiness before our Godc and Fa-ther at the presence of our LordJesusd with all his holy ones.

4 Finally, brothers, just as youreceived instruction from us

3 For this is the will of God,that you should be holyf and ab-stain from sexual immorality.g

4 Each one of you should knowhow to control his own bodyh inholiness i and honor, 5 not withgreedy, uncontrolled sexual pas-sion j like the nations have thatdo not know God.k 6 No oneshould go beyond proper limitsand take advantage of his broth-er in this matter, because Jeho-vah exacts punishment for allthese things, just as we toldyou previously and also strong-ly warned you. 7 For God has

1583 1 THESSALONIANS 4:8–5:14called us, not for unclean-ness, but for holiness.a 8 So,then, the man who disregardsthis is disregarding, not man,but God,b who gives you his holyspirit.c

9 However, concerning broth-erly love,d you do not need usto write to you, for you your-selves are taught by God tolove one another.e 10 In fact, you are doing so toward all thebrothers in all of Mac·e·doni·a.But we urge you, brothers, to goon doing so in fuller measure.11 Make it your aim to livequietlyf and to mind your ownbusinessg and to work with yourhands, h just as we instructedyou, 12 so that you may walkdecently in the eyes of peopleoutside i and not need anything.

13 Moreover, brothers, we donot want you to be ignorantabout those who are sleeping indeath, j so that you may not sor-row as the rest do who have nohope.k 14 For if we have faiththat Jesus died and rose again, l

so too God will bring with himthose who have fallen asleep indeath through Jesus.m 15 Forthis is what we tell you by Je-hovah’s word, that we the livingwho survive to the presence ofthe Lord will in no way precedethose who have fallen asleepin death; 16 because the Lordhimself will descend from heav-en with a commanding call, withan archangel’sn voice and withGod’s trumpet, and those whoare dead in union with Christwill rise first.o 17 Afterwardwe the living who are surviv-ing will, together with them, becaught away in cloudsp to meetthe Lordq in the air; and thuswe will always be with the Lord.r18 So keep comforting one an-other with these words.

4:13 Or “uninformed.” 4:15; 5:2 SeeApp. A5.

5 Now as for the times and theseasons, brothers, you need

nothing to be written to you.2 For you yourselves know verywell that Jehovah’s daya is com-ing exactly as a thief in thenight.b 3 Whenever it is thatthey are saying, “Peace and se-curity!” then sudden destruc-tion is to be instantly on them, c

just like birth pains on a preg-nant woman, and they will byno means escape. 4 But you, brothers, you are not in dark-ness, so that the day shouldovertake you as it would thieves,5 for you are all sons of lightand sons of day.d We belongneither to night nor to dark-ness.e

6 So, then, let us not sleep onas the rest do, f but let us stayawakeg and keep our senses.h7 For those who sleep, sleep atnight, and those who get drunkare drunk at night. i 8 But asfor us who belong to the day,let us keep our senses and puton the breastplate of faithand love and the hope of sal-vation as a helmet j 9 becauseGod assigned us, not to wrath, but to the acquiring of salvationk

through our Lord Jesus Christ.10 He died for us, l so thatwhether we stay awake or areasleep, we should live togetherwith him.m 11 Therefore, keepencouraging one another andbuilding one another up, n just asyou are in fact doing.

12 Now we request you, brothers, to show respect forthose who are working hardamong you and presiding overyou in the Lord and admonish-ing you; 13 and to give themextraordinary consideration inlove because of their work.oBe peaceable with one anoth-er.p 14 On the other hand, we

1585 2 THESSALONIANS 1:5–2:12a result we ourselves take pridein youa among the congregationsof God because of your endur-ance and faith in all your perse-cutions and the hardships thatyou are suffering.b 5 This is aproof of the righteous judgmentof God, leading to your beingcounted worthy of the Kingdomof God, for which you are indeedsuffering.c

6 This takes into accountthat it is righteous on God’s partto repay tribulation to thosewho make tribulation for you.d7 But you who suffer tribulationwill be given relief along withus at the revelation of the LordJesuse from heaven with hispowerful angels f 8 in a flam-ing fire, as he brings vengeanceon those who do not know Godand those who do not obey thegood news about our Lord Je-sus.g 9 These very ones willundergo the judicial punishmentof everlasting destructionh frombefore the Lord and from theglory of his strength, 10 at thetime when he comes to be glo-rified in connection with hisholy ones and to be regarded inthat day with wonder among allthose who exercised faith, be-cause the witness we gave metwith faith among you.

11 To that very end we al-ways pray for you, that ourGod may count you worthy ofhis calling i and with his powerperform completely all the goodthat he pleases and every workof faith. 12 This is so that thename of our Lord Jesus may beglorified in you and you in unionwith him, according to the un-deserved kindness of our Godand of the Lord Jesus Christ.

we ask you 2 not to be quicklyshaken from your reason nor tobe alarmed either by an inspiredstatementa or by a spoken mes-sage or by a letter appearing tobe from us, to the effect that theday of Jehovahb is here.

3 Let no one lead you astrayin any way, because it willnot come unless the apostasyc

comes first and the man of law-lessnessd gets revealed, the sonof destruction.e 4 He stands inopposition and exalts himselfabove every so-called god or ob-ject of worship, so that hesits down in the temple of God,publicly showing himself to bea god. 5 Do you not rememberthat when I was still with you,I used to tell you these things?

6 And now you know whatis acting as a restraint, so thathe will be revealed in his owndue time. 7 True, the mysteryof this lawlessness is alreadyat work,f but only until theone who is right now acting asa restraint is out of the way.8 Then, indeed, the lawless onewill be revealed, whom the LordJesus will do away with by thespirit of his mouthg and bring tonothing by the manifestationh ofhis presence. 9 But the lawlessone’s presence is by the opera-tion of Satani with every pow-erful work and lying signs andwonders j 10 and every un-righteous deceptionk for thosewho are perishing, as a retri-bution because they did not ac-cept the love of the truth in or-der that they might be saved.11 That is why God lets a delud-ing influence mislead them sothat they may come to believethe lie, l 12 in order that theyall may be judged because they

On the contrary, by labor andtoil we were working night andday so as not to impose an ex-pensive burden on any one ofyou.e 9 Not that we do nothave authority, f but we wantedto offer ourselves as an examplefor you to imitate.g 10 In fact, when we were with you, we usedto give you this order: “If anyonedoes not want to work, neitherlet him eat.”h 11 For we hearthat some are walking disorder-ly among you, i not working atall, but meddling with what doesnot concern them. j 12 To suchpeople we give the order andexhortation in the Lord JesusChrist that they should workquietly and eat food they them-selves earn.k

13 For your part, brothers,do not give up in doing good.14 But if anyone is not obedientto our word through this letter, keep this one marked and stopassociating with him, l so that hemay become ashamed. 15 Andyet do not consider him an ene-my, but continue admonishinghimm as a brother.

RELIGION 325

Gratitude for the sacrifice of Christ made them eager to get rid of

anything that caused their lives to be fruitless, lacking real meaning

because they did not honor God. Should not we have the same

attitude?)

What is the Bible’s viewpoint as to interfaith?

How did Jesus view religious leaders who pretended to be

righteous but disrespected God? “Jesus said to them: ‘If God were your

Father, you would love me, for from God I came forth and am here.

Neither have I come of my own initiative at all, but that One sent me

forth. . . . You are from your father the Devil, and you wish to do the

desires of your father. That one was a manslayer when he began, and he

did not stand fast in the truth, because truth is not in him. When he

speaks the lie, he speaks according to his own disposition, because he is

a liar and the father of the lie. Because I, on the other hand, tell the

truth, you do not believe me. . . . This is why you do not listen, because

you are not from God.’”—John 8:42-47.

Would it demonstrate loyalty to God and to his righteous standards

if his servants were to embrace in religious brotherhood those who

themselves practice what God condemns or who condone such

practices? “Quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that

is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a

drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man. . . .

Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for

unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, nor thieves, nor greedy

persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s

kingdom.” (1 Cor. 5:11; 6:9, 10) “Whoever . . . wants to be a friend of

the world is constituting himself an enemy of God.” (Jas. 4:4) “O you

lovers of Jehovah, hate what is bad. He is guarding the souls of his

loyal ones.”—Ps. 97:10.

2 Cor. 6:14-17: “Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers.

For what fellowship do righteousness and lawlessness have? Or what

sharing does light have with darkness? Further, what harmony is there

between Christ and Belial? Or what portion does a faithful person have

with an unbeliever? And what agreement does God’s temple have with

Page 17: UseOurWebSitetoTeach YourChildrenda-ip.getmyip.com/pdf/Study prep/2013/42 Mid-Week Meeting File 10-21-13.pdf2013 Christian Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Our Kingdom Ministry

326 RELIGION

idols? . . . ‘“Therefore get out from among them, and separate

yourselves,” says Jehovah, “and quit touching the unclean thing”’;

‘“and I will take you in.”’”

Rev. 18:4, 5: “I heard another voice out of heaven say: ‘Get out

of her, my people, if you do not want to share with her in her sins,

and if you do not want to receive part of her plagues. For her sins

have massed together clear up to heaven, and God has called her

acts of injustice to mind.’” (For details, see the main heading

“Babylon the Great.”)

Is belonging to an organized religion

necessary?

Most religious organizations have produced bad fruitage. It is

not the fact that groups are organized that is bad. But many have

promoted forms of worship that are based on false teachings and are

largely ritualistic instead of providing genuine spiritual guidance;

they have been misused to control the lives of people for selfish

objectives; they have been overly concerned with money collections

and ornate houses of worship instead of spiritual values; their

members are often hypocritical. Obviously no one who loves

righteousness would want to belong to such an organization. But

true religion is a refreshing contrast to all of that. Nevertheless, to

fulfill the Bible’s requirements, it must be organized.

Heb. 10:24, 25: “Let us consider one another to incite to love

and fine works, not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as

some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the

more so as you behold the day drawing near.” (To carry out this

Scriptural command, there must be Christian meetings that we can

attend on a consistent basis. Such an arrangement encourages us to

express love toward others, not only concern about self.)

1 Cor. 1:10: “Now I exhort you, brothers, through the name of

our Lord Jesus Christ that you should all speak in agreement, and

that there should not be divisions among you, but that you may be

fitly united in the same mind and in the same line of thought.” (Such

with various sicknesses,a and heexpelled many demons, but hewould not let the demons speak, for they knew him to be Christ.

35 Early in the morning, whileit was still dark, he got up andwent outside and left for an iso-lated place, and there he beganpraying.b 36 However, Simonand those with him hunted himdown 37 and found him, andthey said to him: “Everyone islooking for you.” 38 But he saidto them: “Let us go somewhereelse, into the towns nearby, sothat I may preach there also, forthis is why I have come.”c

39 And he went, preaching intheir synagogues throughout thewhole of Gali·lee and expellingthe demons.d

40 There also came to hima leper, pleading with him evenon bended knee, saying to him:“If you just want to, you canmake me clean.”e 41 At thathe was moved with pity, andhe stretched out his hand andtouched him, and said to him:“I want to! Be made clean.”f

42 Immediately the leprosy van-ished from him, and he becameclean. 43 Then he gave himstrict orders and at once senthim away, 44 saying to him:“See that you say nothing to any-one, but go show yourself to thepriest and offer for your cleans-ing the things Moses directed, gfor a witness to them.”h 45 Butafter going away, the man start-ed to proclaim it a great deal andto spread the account widely, sothat Jesus was no longer able toenter openly into a city, but hestayed outside in isolated places.Yet they kept coming to him fromall sides. i

many gathered that there wasno more room, not even aroundthe door, and he began to speakthe word to them.a 3 And theybrought him a paralytic carriedby four men.b 4 But they couldnot bring him right to Jesus be-cause of the crowd, so they re-moved the roof above Jesus, andafter digging an opening, theylowered the stretcher on whichthe paralytic was lying. 5 WhenJesus saw their faith,c he saidto the paralytic: “Child, your sinsare forgiven.”d 6 Now some ofthe scribes were there, sittingand reasoning in their hearts:e7 “Why is this man talking thisway? He is blaspheming. Whocan forgive sins except one,God?”f 8 But immediately Je-sus discerned by his spirit thatthey were reasoning that wayamong themselves, so he saidto them: “Why are you reason-ing these things in your hearts?g

9 Which is easier, to say to theparalytic, ‘Your sins are forgiv-en,’ or to say, ‘Get up and pickup your stretcher and walk’?10 But in order for you to knowthat the Son of manh has author-ity to forgive sins on earth—” i hesaid to the paralytic: 11 “I sayto you, Get up, pick up yourstretcher, and go to your home.”12 At that he got up and imme-diately picked up his stretcherand walked out in front of themall. So they were all astonished, and they glorified God, saying:“We have never seen anythinglike this.” j

13 Again he went out along-side the sea, and all the crowdkept coming to him, and he be-gan to teach them. 14 And ashe was passing by, he caughtsight of Levi the son of Al·phae-us sitting at the tax office, andhe said to him: “Be my follower.”At that he rose up and followedhim.k 15 Later he was dining

a house away from the crowd, his disciples began to ques-tion him about the illustration.f18 So he said to them: “Are youalso without understanding likethem? Are you not aware thatnothing from outside that en-ters into a man can defile him,19 since it enters, not into hisheart, but into his stomach, andit passes out into the sewer?”Thus he declared all foods clean.20 Further, he said: “That whichcomes out of a man is whatdefiles him.g 21 For from in-side, out of the heart of men, hcome injurious reasonings, sex-ual immorality, thefts, murders,22 acts of adultery, greed, actsof wickedness, deceit, brazenconduct, an envious eye, blas-phemy, haughtiness, and un-reasonableness. 23 All thesewicked things come from withinand defile a man.”

31 When Jesus returned fromthe region of Tyre, he wentthrough Sidon to the Sea ofGali·lee, through the regionof De·capo·lis.e 32 Here theybrought him a deaf man witha speech impediment, f and theypleaded with him to lay his handon him. 33 And he took himaside privately, away from thecrowd. Then he put his fingersinto the man’s ears, and afterspitting, he touched his tongue.g34 And looking up into heav-en, he sighed deeply and said tohim: “Ephpha·tha,” that is, “Beopened.” 35 At this his earswere opened,h and his speechimpediment was removed, andhe began speaking normally.36 With that he ordered themnot to tell anyone, i but the morehe would order them, the morethey would proclaim it. j 37 In-deed, they were astounded be-yond measure, k and they said:“He has done all things well. LUKE 8:35–9:3 139435 Then people went out to

see what had happened. Theycame to Jesus and found theman from whom the demons hadcome out, clothed and in hisright mind, sitting at the feetof Jesus, and they grew fearful.36 Those who had seen it re-ported to them how the demon-possessed man had been madewell. 37 Then a great numberfrom the surrounding region ofthe Gera·senes asked Jesus togo away from them, becausethey were gripped by great fear. Then he went aboard the boat todepart. 38 However, the manfrom whom the demons hadgone out kept begging to con-tinue with him, but he sentthe man away, saying:a 39 “Goback home, and keep on relat-ing what God did for you.” So hewent away, proclaiming through-out the whole city what Jesushad done for him.

40 When Jesus returned, thecrowd received him kindly, forthey were all expecting him.b41 But look! a man named Jai-rus came; this man was a presid-ing officer of the synagogue. Andhe fell at the feet of Jesus andbegan to plead with him to cometo his house,c 42 because hisonly daughter, who was about12 years old, was dying.

As Jesus was going, thecrowds pressed in on him.43 Now there was a womanwho had a flow of bloodd for12 years, and she had not beenable to get a cure from any-one.e 44 She approached frombehind and touched the fringe ofhis outer garment, f and immedi-ately her flow of blood stopped.45 So Jesus said: “Who touchedme?” When they were all deny-ing it, Peter said: “Instructor, thecrowds are hemming you in andpressing against you.”g 46 But

Jesus said: “Someone touchedme, for I know that powera

went out of me.” 47 Seeing thatshe had not escaped notice, thewoman came trembling and felldown before him and declaredbefore all the people why shetouched him and how she washealed immediately. 48 But hesaid to her: “Daughter, your faithhas made you well. Go inpeace.”b

49 While he was yet speaking,a representative of the presidingofficer of the synagogue came, saying: “Your daughter has died;do not bother the Teacher anylonger.”c 50 On hearing this,Jesus answered him: “Have nofear, only have faith, and shewill be saved.”d 51 When hereached the house, he did not letanyone go in with him except Pe-ter, John, James, and the girl’sfather and mother. 52 But peo-ple were all weeping and beat-ing themselves in grief for her.So he said: “Stop weeping,e forshe did not die but is sleeping.”f

53 At this they began to laughat him scornfully, because theyknew she had died. 54 But hetook her by the hand and calledto her: “Child, get up!”g 55 Andher spirith returned, and sherose immediately, i and he or-dered that something be givenher to eat. 56 Well, her parentswere beside themselves, but heinstructed them to tell no onewhat had happened. j

9 Then he called the Twelvetogether and gave them pow-

er and authority over all thedemonsk and to cure diseas-es. l 2 And he sent them out topreach the Kingdom of God andto heal, 3 and he said to them:“Carry nothing for the trip, nei-ther staff nor food pouch norbread nor money; neither have

1. When a man becomes a fatherAnd a woman has a child of her own,

They share a trust, they must remember,That is not theirs, not theirs alone.

The gift they share is from Jehovah;Of life and love he is the one true Source.

To parents he gives sure directionThat they may follow the wisest course.

(CHORUS)

A sacred trust you have been given;A precious life is in your hands.

You can bestow the greatest favor;Instruct your child in God’s commands.

2. All the words God has commanded—They must always prove to be on your heart.

These words you’ll speak to sons and daughters; This is your trust, this is your part.

To them you’ll speak along your roadway,When you rise up and when you are at rest.

In years to come, may they remember,May they be faithful, may they be blessed.

(Chorus)
