1Ellison Building

Ellison Building is home to the faculty of Health and Life Sciences, and the faculty of Engineering and Environment.

Students of the Built Environment have access todedicated architecture studios (C block) and a VirtualReality Suite (B block).

Students of Geography and Environment have access toa variety of laboratories including GeographicalInformation System computer labs (D Block) and wetbench style labs for investigating a range ofenvironmental issues (A Block).

Ellison Building has over 20 state-of-the-art laboratoriesfor Life Science students, situated on the 3rd, 4th, 5thand 6th floors. The laboratories contain both general andspecialist equipment, ranging from classic wet benchtechniques through to the latest molecular and elementalanalysis.

Ellison Building E block houses facilities for Computing,Engineering and Information Science relatedprogrammes, and in particular industry standardengineering equipment. Key teaching laboratory areasinclude: vibration, stress and strain testing facilities; anacoustic & environment engine test cell; a precisionmanufacture workshop; and a microwave test laboratory.Specialist laboratories support the teaching ofOptoelectronics, Electronic Design Automation,Computer Aided Design, Communications,Microprocessors, Surface Mount Technology, Computingand Circuit Simulation, Power Systems and Control,Advanced 3D Design, Fluid Mechanics, and ThermalEnergy Systems. Two of the wind turbines can be seen inoperation as you pass by Ellison Building

Leaving through the main entrance:

2 The Wynne Jones Centre

This building is primarily used for the postgraduateteaching of programmes in the Built Environment andGeography and Environment. It also houses a Usability of

Spatial Environment Lab, to assess the use of urban andenvironmental spaces.

Students who want to start their own business can useThe Hatchery where they can hire office space.

On the fourth floor is the Multifaith Chaplaincy. The Chaplain offers pastoral and spiritual support tostudents and staff of all faiths.

Next to the Wynne Jones Centre is Nixon Hall which isone of the largest lecture theatres on city campus holdingup to 224 students.

Next, walk across the bridge towards City Campus East(CCE). Whilst walking over the bridge, to your left is ablue, red and cream building known as:

3 Camden Court

Camden Court is self catered livingaccommodation built in 2002 and has 345rooms. All rooms are en-suite with 4-6students sharing akitchen and dining

room in self contained flats.

Costs are £106.50 per week and includes fuel costs*

4 City Campus East (CCE)

City Campus East is primarily used for the teaching ofprogrammes in Fashion, Design, Business, Finance, Law,and Marketing.

The award-winning buildings are eco friendly havingrecycled 95% of the waste materials from the cinemawhich previously occupied the site. Rain water is alsocollected from the roofs and reused to flush toilets.

The design of the two buildings is in the shape of thebrain, with the creative side (Design Building) on the left and the thinking side (Newcastle Business Schooland Northumbria Law School) on the right.

Having no fewer than 8,000 full and part-time students, we are the largest faculty at Northumbria University. All students at Coach Lane Campus are studying a Health,Education or Community related course.

As well as the Library at City Campus, there is a Librarylocated on Coach Lane Campus East which provides acomprehensive range of resources and services. Careersand Employment Services and a wide range of StudentSupport and advice is also available at the Library.

Coach Lane Campus also has its own Students’ Unionwhich is run by students, for students. Everyone who enrolsat Northumbria automatically becomes a member and canenjoy all the benefits that the Union offers. Food and drinksare available from here, and there is a Costa and a canteenas well as the Union, which serves food daily.

The Clinical Skills Centre at Coach Lane is a mock hospital,giving students who study nursing, midwifery, occupationaltherapy, operating department practice and physiotherapythe chance to gain practical skills and give a real insight totheir chosen area of study. Many students at Coach Laneare given the chance to spend a lot of time on placement,again giving them the chance to have a real ‘hands on’approach whilst on their course.

Unlike City Campus, Coach Lane has intakes in January and March as well as September, so there is always a lively and friendly atmosphere here.

Northumbria Law School has its own dedicated lawlibrary and law court. The courtroom has also beenused by a host of TV programmes over the years asan authentic setting for filming courtroom scenes.

The entrance to the Design building incorporates amodern gallery space usually decorated by studentexhibitions. Facilities available to Design students includeMac suites with the latest software, dedicated fashionspace with hundreds of sewing machines and a range ofteaching and practical space.

Driven by five academic communities; Fashion,Industrial, Visual Communication and Innovation Design,and Creative Entrepreneurship, the Design buildingencompasses state of the art facilities, dedicatedworkshop space and the latest in design technology.

Famous alumni include; Sir Jonathan Ive (principledesigner of the iPod and iPhone), Scott Henshall (CEO,Scott Henshall Ltd), Warren Trezevant (Pixar AnimationStudio) and Rob Law MBE (designer of the Trunki).

Walk back over the bridge and turn right, this will leadyou towards the Sports Centre. On your way if you lookright, over the dual carriageway you will see:

5 Pandon Building

This building is primarily used for the teaching ofprogrammes in Computing, Engineering, InformationSciences, Mathematics and Physics. This buildingoffers 'state of the art’ laboratories for computerforensics, computer games development, computernetworks, multimedia and business computing - allequipped with the latest, industry standard software.Additional facilities include the Pandon Basement with150+ computers, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Continuing along the path, on your left hand side youwill see Sport Central:

6 Sport Central

Sport Central is theuniversity’s new £30 millionsports facility. Open tostudents, staff and membersof the public, Sport Centralhas a 3000 seat indoor arenawhich offers a player and

spectator experience second to none. In addition tohosting university games, the arena is also home to theBritish Basketball Champions, the Newcastle Eagles.Sport Central offers 4 sport halls, a 25 metre swimmingpool with variable depth floor, a 12 metre climbing wallwith eighteen different climbing routes, a 40 metre sprinttrack, 3 glass backed squash courts, a strength andconditioning suite and a fitness centre with over 150

stations of cardio-vascular, resistance, core-stability andfree weights.

Incorporated within Sport Central are a number of world class laboratories dedicated to research at thecutting edge of sport science. These laboratories will beutilised for academic excellence by Sport Science andSport Development students, and study will also be usedto improve the performance of our own universityathletes on the performance sport programme.

7 Lovaine Hall

There is a mix of fully catered rooms and self cateredrooms in this 156 room student accommodation.

Specialist rooms in this building includededicated Media Cinema, woodwork and metal shops,sculpture rooms, dance and art studios and printmakingstudios. 10 Lipman Building

Lipman Building is primarily used for the teaching ofprogrammes in Humanities, Languages and SocialSciences related subjects. The ground floor houses alarge lecture theatre and café. Located in the basementthere is a 103 seat theatre used by students from theperformance courses as well as technical theatresupport room.

The Quad

The Quad is the heart of the City Campus, here you will find the Students’ Union, the Library and Student Services.

11 The Students’ Union

The Students’ Union is the social hub of the campus. Run by a team of student officersknow as the ExecutiveCommittee, the Students’Union not only organiseshundreds of fun activitiesand events but also

provides independent advice and great volunteeropportunities to enhance your CV.

Having just undergone major refurbishment, theStudents’ Union now boasts a range of bars, a newtheatre and live music venue, food and retail outlets,plenty of recreational space and IT facilities.

The tall brown brick building in the Quad is:

12 The Library

Northumbria’s Librariesare nationally recognisedfor the range and qualityof services they offer. TheLibrary provides anexciting mix of learningspaces, includingZones4Learning withcutting-edge technology,learning cafés, quiet spaces and social areas.Northumbria’s Libraries contain over half a millionbooks, more than 50,000 print and electronic journalsand over 160,000 eBooks. There are over 700 ITworkstations plus laptops and WiFi access throughout.During semesters City Campus Library is open 24/7.Help is also available 24/7 through the Ask4Help service.

Adjacent to the Library is University Gallery, presentingexhibitions by artists of national and internationaldistinction, as well as less established but promisingartists. The Gallery specialises in contemporarypainting, sculpture, printmaking and photographyexhibitions, as well as historic and thematic loanexhibitions from national collections.

If you walk through the walkway beneath the StudentSupport and Wellbeing sign you will come to:

13 Northumberland Building

This building is primarily used for the teaching ofprogrammes in Sport and Exercise, SportDevelopment, Psychology, Chemical and ForensicSciences, Biomedical Sciences, Food and NutritionalSciences, and Biology. It also houses three renownedresearch centres: the Cognition and CommunicationResearch Centre, the Brain Performance and NutritionResearch Centre, the Sport Exercise and WellbeingResearch Centre and the Health in Action ResearchGroup. Life Science students enjoy a range of newteaching laboratories and flexible teaching areas.

On the ground floor of the Northumberland Building,you will also find the Student Support and WellbeingCentre. Here you can access a range of different typesof support and advice – including disability anddyslexia support, counselling and mental healthsupport, financial advice, information about chaplaincyand faith advice, and international student support.

The national award winning Careers & EmploymentService is also located on the ground floor of theNorthumberland Building. Call into the Careers Centrefor help in finding student and graduate jobs, one-to-one guidance with your career planning, support indeveloping employability skills and resources to helpyou become a great applicant.

14 Trinity Building

A converted church, the building is now used for ITfacilities for Built Environment and Geography andEnvironment students as well as being the home of theMarketing and Recruitment department andNorthumbria Graphics

To the right of Trinity Building you will see a tall redbrick building known as:

15 Sutherland Building

The University’s Finance Officeand Human ResourcesDepartment are situated here.

There is also the Great Hall onthe first floor which is abeautifully decorated hall usedfor conferences and talks.

Northumbria’s Librariesare nationally recognisedfor the range and qualityof services they offer. TheLibrary provides anexciting mix of learningspaces, includingZones4Learning withcutting-edge technology,learning cafés, quiet spaces and social areas.Northumbria’s Libraries contain over half a millionbooks, more than 50,000 print and electronic journalsand over 160,000 eBooks. There are over 700 ITworkstations plus laptops and WiFi access throughout.During semesters City Campus Library is open 24/7.Help is also available 24/7 through the Ask4Help service.

Adjacent to the Library is University Gallery, presentingexhibitions by artists of national and internationaldistinction, as well as less established but promisingartists. The Gallery specialises in contemporarypainting, sculpture, printmaking and photographyexhibitions, as well as historic and thematic loanexhibitions from national collections.

13 Northumberland Building

This building is primarily used for the teaching ofprogrammes in Sport and Exercise, SportDevelopment, Psychology, Chemical and ForensicSciences, Biomedical Sciences, Food and NutritionalSciences, and Biology. It also houses three renownedresearch centres: the Cognition and CommunicationResearch Centre, the Brain Performance and NutritionResearch Centre, the Sport Exercise and WellbeingResearch Centre and the Health in Action ResearchGroup. Life Science students enjoy a range of newteaching laboratories and flexible teaching areas.

On the ground floor of the Northumberland Building,you will also find the Student Support and WellbeingCentre. Here you can access a range of different typesof support and advice – including disability anddyslexia support, counselling and mental healthsupport, financial advice, information about chaplaincyand faith advice, and international student support.

The national award winning Careers & EmploymentService is also located on the ground floor of theNorthumberland Building. The University’s Finance Officeand Human ResourcesDepartment are situated here.

1Ellison Building

Ellison Building is home to the faculty of Health and Life Sciences, and the faculty of Engineering and Environment.

Students of the Built Environment have access todedicated architecture studios (C block) and a VirtualReality Suite (B block).

Students of Geography and Environment have access toa variety of laboratories including GeographicalInformation System computer labs (D Block) and wetbench style labs for investigating a range ofenvironmental issues (A Block).

Ellison Building has over 20 state-of-the-art laboratoriesfor Life Science students, situated on the 3rd, 4th, 5thand 6th floors. The laboratories contain both general andspecialist equipment, ranging from classic wet benchtechniques through to the latest molecular and elementalanalysis.

Ellison Building E block houses facilities for Computing,Engineering and Information Science relatedprogrammes, and in particular industry standardengineering equipment. Key teaching laboratory areasinclude: vibration, stress and strain testing facilities; anacoustic & environment engine test cell; a precisionmanufacture workshop; and a microwave test laboratory.Specialist laboratories support the teaching ofOptoelectronics, Electronic Design Automation,Computer Aided Design, Communications,Microprocessors, Surface Mount Technology, Computingand Circuit Simulation, Power Systems and Control,Advanced 3D Design, Fluid Mechanics, and ThermalEnergy Systems. This building is primarily used for the postgraduateteaching of programmes in the Built Environment andGeography and Environment. It also houses a Usability of

Spatial Environment Lab, to assess the use of urban andenvironmental spaces.

Students who want to start their own business can useThe Hatchery where they can hire office space.

On the fourth floor is the Multifaith Chaplaincy. The Chaplain offers pastoral and spiritual support tostudents and staff of all faiths.

Next to the Wynne Jones Centre is Nixon Hall which isone of the largest lecture theatres on city campus holdingup to 224 students.

Next, walk across the bridge towards City Campus East(CCE). Whilst walking over the bridge, to your left is ablue, red and cream building known as:

3 Camden Court

Camden Court is self catered livingaccommodation built in 2002 and has 345rooms. All rooms are en-suite with 4-6students sharing akitchen and dining

room in self contained flats.

4 City Campus East (CCE)

City Campus East is primarily used for the teaching ofprogrammes in Fashion, Design, Business, Finance, Law,and Marketing.

The award-winning buildings are eco friendly havingrecycled 95% of the waste materials from the cinemawhich previously occupied the site. Rain water is alsocollected from the roofs and reused to flush toilets.

The design of the two buildings is in the shape of thebrain, with the creative side (Design Building) on the left and the thinking side (Newcastle Business Schooland Northumbria Law School) on the right.

Having no fewer than 8,000 full and part-time students, we are the largest faculty at Northumbria University. All students at Coach Lane Campus are studying a Health,Education or Community related course.

As well as the Library at City Campus, there is a Librarylocated on Coach Lane Campus East which provides acomprehensive range of resources and services. Careersand Employment Services and a wide range of StudentSupport and advice is also available at the Library.

Coach Lane Campus also has its own Students’ Unionwhich is run by students, for students. Everyone who enrolsat Northumbria automatically becomes a member and canenjoy all the benefits that the Union offers. Food and drinksare available from here, and there is a Costa and a canteenas well as the Union, which serves food daily.

The Clinical Skills Centre at Coach Lane is a mock hospital,giving students who study nursing, midwifery, occupationaltherapy, operating department practice and physiotherapythe chance to gain practical skills and give a real insight totheir chosen area of study. Many students at Coach Laneare given the chance to spend a lot of time on placement,again giving them the chance to have a real ‘hands on’approach whilst on their course.

Unlike City Campus, Coach Lane has intakes in January and March as well as September, so there is always a lively and friendly atmosphere here.
