4. Used to and Be used to

Used to and Be used to have similar form, but they are different in meaning and the verb following them. Used to is followed by verb, while be used to is followed by –ing form only.

Used to + verb means habit in the past which has not continued (kebiasaan pada waktu lampau)

Be used to + -ing form means to be accustomed to ( terbiasa ).

Example

Incorrect: I am used to go to school on foot when I was in Junior High.

Correct: I used to go to school on foot when I was in Junior High. (dulu biasanya)

Or

I was used to going to school on foot when I was in Junior

Incorrect: We used to use chopstick when we have meals.

Correct: We are used to using chopstick when we have meals (terbiasa)

Incorrect: He used to get everything easily as his parents are wealthy.

Correct: He is used to getting everything easily as his parents are wealthy

5. HAD BETTERHad better is similar to a modal. Although had appears to be a past, had better expresses advice for the future.

Had better is followed by a verb (the basic form of verb). Avoid using to infinitive or –ing form with the phrase. The negative is formed by adding NOT after it.

6. PREFERENCE – WOULD RATHER (‘d rather)

As it is with had better, WOULD RATHER is also similar to a modal and appears to be a past. It expresses preference in present and future time. Avoid using an infinitive or an –ing form instead of a verb word.

Incorrect: She told me that she’d rather not to serve on the committee.

Correct: She told me that she’d rather not serve on the committee.

Incorrect: If you don’t mind I’d rather not going.

Correct: If you don’t mind, I’d rather not go

7. PREFERENCE for another – WOULD RATHER THAT

When the preference is for another person or thing, would rather that introduces a clause. The other person or thing is the subject of the clause.

Although the verb is past tense, the preference is for present or future time.

Remember that despite their similar function to express preference, would rather and would rather that are completely different in the form of verb following them. Look again at point 6, and compare with the form of would rather that as shown in the following examples.

Avoid using a verb word or should. Use past tense verb only with the clause. Avoid using do not / does not but use did not with the clause.

In addition to the two forms of preference in point 6 & 7, there are other forms commonly used:

A. PREFER ….. TO…..

This phrase is used with noun or Verb-ing.

Example:

Incorrect: Both orange and apple contain vitamin C, but I prefer apple than orange.

Correct: Both orange and apple contain vitamin C, but I prefer apple to orange

Incorrect: He prefers to drive or to walk

Correct: He prefers driving to walking

Incorrect: Some students prefer working on their tasks individually better than working in groups.

Correct: Some students prefer working on their tasks individually to working in groups.

B. LIKE ….. BETTER THANThis phrase is used in the same way as ‘prefer….to…’. It is used with noun or Verb-ing.

Example:Incorrect: Most boys seem to like outdoor activities than indoor ones.Correct: Most boys seem to like outdoor activities better than indoor ones.

Incorrect: Nowadays more people like to stay in big cities rather than stay in villagesCorrect: Nowadays more people like staying in big cities better than staying in

9. CAUSATIVES

The verbs below are common to you. Causatives are main verbs that cause people or machines to do things or cause things to change. They are listed in order of the most forceful to the least forceful:

Remember that in a causative, a person does not perform an action directly. The person causes it to happen by forcing another person to do it.

A. Causative ‘MAKE’

Example:

Incorrect: I make the students to work on their project

B. Causative ‘Get’GET has less force and authority than MAKE.Example:
