Design BriefYou are being asked to design a USB Pen

Drive

Specification

• Your USB Pen must be fully functional.

• You must design & make an enclosure for the USB Processor to fit into.

• You must make a prototype model of your design prior to computer modelling and manufacture

• You must model the design in Inventor to allow the drawing file to be transferred to the laser machine.

• You must base all your ideas on a theme.

Page 3: USB Pen Design

What is the theme?

The theme will decided through using an idea generation

technique called morphological analysis.

Page 4: USB Pen Design

What is a Research Sheet ?

A research sheet is used to gather visual information on your area of design & the theme. It can include drawings & printed images that will:

1. Help you understand what you are designing (USB Pen Drive).

2. Provide imagery that will be used in your ideas (based on a theme).

AcrylicMorphological Analysis

Outcome D1.6Incorporating relevant findings of research in a design proposal

Page 6: USB Pen Design

Research Task 1:-The USB Pen Drive

.

It can be beneficial to look at existing products to see what designs are already out there.

Task: • Using the internet research existing USB pens –

don’t just stick to novelty designs as you may want a more ‘professional’ design.

• Collect 5 or 6 designs and write a little bit about each – what you like about the design, what you think it is made from, who you think would use it

Learn: • To use the internet as a research tool.• To start to consider important design factors that

influence a design

Page 7: USB Pen Design

Existing Pen drives

Page 8: USB Pen Design

Research Task 2: colour pencil rendering

Make a feint line drawing of an item from one of the image sheets.

Task: • Using colour pencil, carefully

render your sketch using the techniques shown to you.

Learn: • To improve sketching and

rendering skills• To improve your handling of

colour pencil (Colour,Tone and Texture)

Page 9: USB Pen Design

Research Task 3: Marker Pen Rendering

Make a feint pencil sketch of an item from one of the image-sheets.

Task: • Using marker pens

render the sketch.

Learn: • To improve sketching and

rendering skills• To improve your handling of

marker pens (Blending Tones & Highlighting)

Page 10: USB Pen Design

Research Task 4:- Study of Material - Acrylic

You will use Acrylic to make your

USB Pen casing

Task: • Collect researchInformation about the Material AcrylicLearn about: • What is Acrylic?• In what form can you buy it?• What adhesive is used to join it?• You may find other information

during you research!

Outcome M1.5Using correct names and terminology when referring to materials and their properties

Page 11: USB Pen Design

The Processor that is to be used in the production of your USB pen will determine the overall size of the casing

Task: • Collect research

information about the USB Processor

work• What is the size of the USB

processor(lxbxw) & (memory)?

Preparing a Research Sheet

Sort out all your collected images & drawings.

Task:Trim images using scissors or guillotine. Think carefully about the size & shape of these images, they have to look good!

Learn: • To cut out neatly & accurately.

• To make good aesthetic decisions.

Page 14: USB Pen Design

Research Sheet - Lay OutTask:

Begin to carefully arrange the images on your sheet. e.g. your renderings could be placed together in a group.

Learn:• About lay-out &

composition.• To make good

aesthetic decisions.

Finishing a Research Sheet

Task: Using Blue-tac, lightly stick down all your images. This sounds simple, but you have to stick them in the right place & without any mess!

Learn:

• To organise & arrange images properly.

• To stick down images cleanly & securely.

Morphological AnalysisSimplifying ImagesInitial Design Ideas

JustificationDeveloping Ideas

Choosing the Final DesignModelling the Final Design

Page 17: USB Pen Design

Development Task 1 – Morphological Analysis

Task: Create your own Morphological

analysis table Learn:

• About using the morphological analysis to help create different design ideas.

Outcome D1.5 Selecting and using idea generation techniques to generate a design proposal.

Morphological Analysis

Who? Age? Colour? Theme?

Male 12 to 16 Red Sport

Female 17-21 Yellow Hobby

22-30 Green Subject

30-40 Blue Animals

Black Vehicles

Pink Seaside

Purple Space

Task:- •Draw a table with the four headings shown. Add in the additional information suggested colours and themes. You can add more of your own of you wish.

Using the grid create 6 different combinations. They must all be different

EgFemale – 12 to 16 – Yellow – SeasideFemale – 17 to 21 – Black – SportMale – 22-30 – Green – HobbyMale – 30-40 – Blue – VehicleFemale – 12 to 16 – Pink – AnimalMale – 12 to 16 – Blue - Space

Learn:•How to combine areas of focus to help develop different ideas in the design process.

Page 19: USB Pen Design

Development Task 2 – Developing Morphological combinations

Task: • Look at each combination created in the

morphological analysis exercise. Research possible theme images using the internet – collect images that may be used to develop your ideas – remember to consider the other headings (ie age the design is for)

Learn:• How to consider the factors that influence

each combinations.• How to research images using the internet

Page 20: USB Pen Design

Development Task 3 – Simplyfying Images

Task: • Using each of the images within the

combinations, simplify them to make them easier to create in Inventor. You need to consider the outline cut and the engraved surface finish.

Learn:• Sketching techniques• Consideration of manufacturing process on

the design

Page 21: USB Pen Design

Simplifying Images

Page 22: USB Pen Design

Development Task 5 – Developing Ideas

Task:

• Using the 3 highest scoring ideas from the previous table. Look in detail at how the idea could be developed to come up with a final design. This time you need to split it into 3 layers!

Developing Ideas

Page 28: USB Pen Design

Development Task 6:-Choosing your Final Design

Your 3 developed ideas are now complete. How do you decide which design you are going to manufacture?

Task: On the next sheet you need to Discuss the positive and negative

points to each design. The best way to do this is to go back to the specification at the beginning of the project. Tick off each specification. The one that fulfils the most is the design you will make

Learn:

• How to Evaluate your design ideas • How to be objective about choosing a design to manufacture Outcome D3.3

Evaluating the product and presenting the results, including justification of the evaluation methods used

marker pens or coloured pencils

Learn:

• How to present your final design

Page 31: USB Pen Design
