MS PHD’S Program

• Supported 5 students and 1 administrator to attend May 2009 SSEPmeeting in Utrecht, Netherlands.

• Planning underway to provide travel support for 2009-2011 cohort of students to visit Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and sail aboard research vessel before December 2009 AGU Meeting.

Other Activities• Awaiting proposal from HBCU educator-at-sea for post-cruise

outreach activity award of up to $6,000. Deadline: 1 August 2009.

• IODP exhibit at SACNAS meeting– focus on interdisciplinary science.

Page 18: U.S. Science Support Program Report to the

New Education Initiative

How to broaden participation in IODP?

• Mentoring Program– Formalized mentoring program to provide personal connections for

new participants

• IODP Short Course - Thematic Model– Yearly short courses centered on IODP related themes, similar to

ECORD Summer Schools. – Would focus on science and include programmatic information.

• IODP Short Course - Programmatic Model– Yearly short course based on “nuts and bolts” of IODP (how to fund

a site-survey cruise, how to sail, how to request samples)– Open to all scientific disciplines.
