Biography: Democrat, of Detroit; born June 25, 1945, at Detroit; attended Ferris State College andWestern Michigan University; M.S., education administration, University of Michigan,1977; teacher, Detroit public schools, 1970-1978; elected to the Michigan House ofRepresentatives in 1978 and served in the legislature for 18 years before her electionto Congress in November 1996; as a state representative, she was a Democratic Whipand served on the House Appropriations Committee (first African-American womanto serve on the committee); delegate to the 1980, 1984, and 1988 Democratic NationalConventions; chairperson, Legislative Black Caucus, 1983-1984; member, “YourChildren, Our Children” Resource Committee (a highly acclaimed television docu-mentary) and the Detroit Substance Abuse Advisory Council; selected in 1984 toparticipate in Michigan African Trade Mission and visited several African countries;returned to Nairobi, Kenya in 1985 to participate in the United Nations InternationalWomen’s Conference; in 1986, led an eleven-member delegation for the MichiganDepartment of Agriculture to Nairobi, Kenya to participate in Kenya’s AgriculturalShow; affiliated with the National Organization of 100 Black Women, National BlackCaucus of State Legislators, and the National Order of Women Legislators; formervice-chairperson of the National Black Caucus of the State Legislators InternationalAffairs Committee; member, Board of Trustees, Henry Ford Hospital; as a U.S. Rep-resentative, serves on the House Appropriations Committee, and the Transportation,Treasury and Independent Agencies and the Foreign Operations subcommittees;now in her fourth term, she served as chairwoman of the Congressional BlackCaucus Political Action Committee. Representative Kilpatrick has two children, ason, Kwame, and a daughter, Ayanna. Kwame Kilpatrick was elected in 1996 to theMichigan House of Representatives and filled the seat his mother vacated. KwameKilpatrick went on to become Michigan’s youngest-ever and first African-AmericanState House Democratic Leader. In 2001, he was elected Mayor of Detroit. Repre-sentative Kilpatrick has been awarded the Anthony Wayne Award for Leadershipfrom Wayne State University, the Distinguished Legislator Award from the University

of Michigan, the Distinguished AlumniAward from Ferris State University,the Woman of the Year Award fromGentlemen of Wall Street, Inc., and theBurton Abercrombie Award from the15th Democratic Congressional District.She is a member of the Oak GroveA.M.E. Church and is listed in Who’sWho in Black America, Who’s Who inAmerican Politics, and was featured inthe Detroit Historical Museum’s exhibit,“Black Women in Michigan, 1785-1985.”She is currently serving in her fifth termand as the second vice chair of theCongressional Black Caucus.
