“Oncogenic Targets and Immune Modulation: Ways to Fight Against Cancer”

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITY This is a 3-day national continuing medical education (CME) and nursing education (CE) meeting designed for medical oncologists, hematologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, oncology nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physician assistants, residents and fellows in Hematology/Oncology as well as other healthcare professionals involved in the management of cancer patients.

The 12th Annual New Orleans Summer Cancer Meeting (NOSCM) is a major CME/CE event well established in the Southeast region of the United States. In 2017, the meeting has innovations: simultaneous sessions running in parallel, one for physicians and the other one for nurses. Also, a special emphasis has been dedicated to immunotherapy as more clinical indications are coming up as well as different therapeutic compounds with different companion diagnostic tests which require a careful review on the clinical data. Moreover, based on evaluations from the previous 11 consecutive years, this meeting will provide healthcare professionals taken care of cancer patients with the necessary tools to offer the best quality of care to their patients.

The 12th edition of this national CME/CE program will focus on integrating major advances in basic sciences and how to apply them into the routine clinical practice, and hence, deliver customized therapy to each individual patient. In 2017, the Educational Committee decided to continue with topics such as brain tumor, sarcoma, gynecologic malignancies, geriatric oncology and best supportive of care. As we know, all progress in oncology will not be possible if we do not have the support from novel technology in radiation therapy as well as new diagnostic tools such as liquid biopsy. In the 12th NOSCM, discussion on these techniques will take place. The hematology session in 2017 will have the participation of renowned hematologists who will cover the major hematologic malignancies including lymphoma, myeloma and leukemias. The length of the NOSCM allows plenty of time for the audience to discuss in depth different topics in medical oncology and hematology, and share their thoughts with national and international leaders in the field of lung cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, gastrointestinal carcinomas, pancreas, genitourinary malignancies, gynecologic malignancies, head and neck cancer, supportive of care as well as many hematologic malignancies including multiple myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia, and others. The group of guest faculty is represented by expert clinicians and researchers from premier cancer centers in the United States. The most relevant clinical and investigational data presented at major cancer congresses such as the 2016 American Society of Hematology (ASH), the 2017 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the 2016 European Society of Medical Oncology, and the 2017 American Association for Cancer Research will be presented and discussed in this forum.

CONFERENCE LEARNING OBJECTIVES Upon completion of “New Orleans Summer Cancer Meeting” attendees will be able to:

• Understand immunomodulation as a therapeutic tool against different tumor types; clinical use of checkpoint inhibitors and others in oncology and hematology.

• Learn how to treat complications from immunotherapy such as pneumonitis, colitis, thyroid disorders, hypophysitis, nephritis, and many others.

• Apply molecular biomarkers results into the treatment algorithm of each individual patient.

• Understand and implement a multidisciplinary approach in the management of brain tumors: radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immu- notherapy and assessing neurological complications.

• Recognize the importance of tumor genetic phenotype in the management of different solid tumor types and malignant hematologic diseases: from prognostic value to predictive impact and potential therapeutic target.

• Learn novel carcinogenic pathways recently discovered as well a new indications from therapies approved by the US FDA for different malignant diseases.

• Learn and apply state-of-the-art management of oncologic patient: Precision Medicine, Alternative Medicine, Supportive of Care, and Survivorship Programs.

• Understand the challenges for oncology practices in 2017: MACRA implementation and other issues.
