Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

Sail along glorious Mediterranean coastlines in autumn, when hillsides and sienna-shadedvillages reveal the timeless beauty of this land. Our program includes masterworks of art and architectureas well as private visits to homes and galleries, many with stunning collections.

We are pleased to be accompanied by distinguished Metropolitan Museum lecturer OlivierBernier, who designed this special itinerary to include some of his favorite places. Also joining us onboard will be architectural historian Patrick Bowe, author of Gardens of the Roman World, and RobertPounder, Professor Emeritus of Classics at Vassar College.

Begin in the “eternal” city of Rome, where twenty-five-hundred years of masterpieces vie forattention. After marveling at the Titians, Caravaggios, and Berninis at the splendidly restored BorgheseGallery, embark Sea Cloud II in the port of Civitavecchia for a delightful one-week voyage. Life aboardthis three-masted barque, where sails are set by hand, has no comparison. Her friendly staff, luxuriousaccommodations, and fine dining create an onboard ambiance of relaxed elegance.

Following a relaxed day at sea, step ashore at Livorno for a drive past Tuscan olive groves andvineyards to Pisa, celebrated for its Leaning Tower and Baptistery. Cruising the Italian coastline, we sailto Genoa, where the collections in seaside palaces built by the great trading families between the 14th and17th centuries reflect a blend of wealth and culture. The city’s black-and-white striped cathedral is amongthe most spectacular in Italy. A private reception is arranged at the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj.

Continue along the Riviera to Marseille, for a French dinner under the stars featuring thepiéce de resistance, bouillabaisse! Stroll through Parc Borély and see the remarkable collection ofpaintings at the Musée Cantini. In ever-fashionable St. Tropez, long a haunt of Impressionist painters, visit the enchanting Musée de l’Annonciade, with works by Matisse, Bonnard, and Signac. Our journeyconcludes in Nice, where you may wish to extend your trip with an optional postlude. Prior to ourvoyage, an optional prelude is offered in Rome.

This program is co-sponsored by theNational Trust for Historic Preservation and theAlumnae & Alumni Association of Vassar College. I hope you will join us for what promises to be anunforgettable journey.

Sincerely,

Emily K. RaffertyPresident
