The Naval Base at Pearl Harbor was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964, due to the crucial role it played in the Nation's defense during the twentieth century and the catastrophic events which occurred on December 7, 1941. As a Category 3 facility, it has been determined that Building No. 550 functioned as a part of the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, however, it is only of minor importance to the historic character of the National Historic Landmark. The building was constructed after the close of World War II, and thus is not associated with that historic era of the base. The building printing plant function, although necessary, is only indirectly related to the daily defensive activity of the Naval Station.

Building 550 is a two-story building typical of the modem post-war architecture style influenced by the International style. It has cast-in-place concrete exterior walls and concrete masonry brick interior walls. Steel factory-sash windows run almost continuously around the building on both floors. The windows are stacked, with a two-pane awning window on the top, fixed central window, and hopper window below. Above the windows at both floors is a continuous horizontal cantilevered concrete shade. The interior has concrete slab floors and exposed hexagonal interior columns with flared tops.

Building 550 was constructed in 1946 for use as a printing plant, containing printing and binding areas, camera room and dark room, offices, vault, storage, and spaces for other activities associated with printing. It has ·undergone minor interior alterations, including two small additions on the interior, the removal or addition of interior walls, and addition of new finishes in some areas, but the building maintains its original character. It still continues its original use as the printing plant.
