Since opening its doors in 1976, USMEF has helped membersexport U.S. beef, pork and lamb to emerging and establishedmarkets across the world. USMEF identified promising and

challenging markets in the 1980s and 1990s and is still doing so in the21st century. Exports are exponentially larger than they were in 1976,thanks to our funding sources, our partnership with the U.S.Department of Agriculture, and the hard work of members like you.

Thanks to USMEF efforts, USDA and the support of the beef, pork,lamb, corn, sorghum, and soybean checkoff programs, 13.1 percent ofU.S. beef production was sold to consumers outside our borders in 2003and more than 12 percent of U.S. pork production in 2005. More than360 million bushels of feedgrain and soy products were exportedthrough value added exports of U.S. beef, lamb and pork in 2003.Unfortunately, the bans on U.S. beef imports due to a lone case of BSEreduced our beef exports by 75 percent in 2004 and the feedgrain andsoybean figure fell to a still substantial 234 million bushels.

This directory is first and foremost a tool for improved communication withinour industry. We want you to achieve all that you can achieve in theglobal marketplace, and this little booklet will help you get in touchwith our Denver and international staff. We encourage you to contactus for help, advice and information. We also recommend you referdaily to our Web site, www.usmef.org, which is our primary means ofcommunication with our members.

• Meat from approximately11 in 100 U.S. pigs isdestined for the exportmarket. In 1990, only 3of 100 U.S. pigs wereexported.

• The U.S. exports theequivalent of 51,000hogs daily.

• 1 in every 5 pounds ofpork traded in the worldoriginates from the U.S.

• Japan, Mexico andCanada account for 77percent of U.S. porkexports.

• U.S. pork and porkvariety meat exportshave grown 684 percentsince 1990.

• U.S. pork and porkvariety meat exportshave enjoyed an averageannual growth rate of 14percent during the past10 years.

Beef

• The U.S. beef industryexported 1.274 millionmetric tons of beef andbeef variety meats in2003, a volume onlypreviously exceeded in2000.

• U.S. beef and beefvariety meat exports seta value record in 2003,— more than $3.85billion, up 21 percentfrom 2002.

• U.S. beef and beefvariety meat exports fell75 percent in 2004 dueto import bans when thefirst of two BSE caseswas discovered inDecember 2003.

• U.S. beef exports begana recovery in 2005exporting 472,668 metrictons of beef and beefvariety meats, 47 percentmore than in 2004.

• U.S. beef and beefvariety meat exportsgrew 6 percent annuallyover the decade endingin 2003.

• Japan, Mexico and Koreaaccounted for 75 percentof U.S. beef exports in2003.

Oilseeds andFeedgrains

• Demand for exportedU.S. beef and porkrepresents a significantvalue-added useopportunity forAmerican-grown corn,soybeans and sorghum.

• USMEF estimates thatmore than 326 millionbushels of feedgrainswere exported throughU.S. beef and porkexports in 2003.

• More than 38 millionbushels of soybeans wereexported through U.S.beef and pork exports in2003 — a 434 percentincrease in soybeanutilization as comparedto 1990.

• Every pound of U.S. porkexported represents theutilization of 1.5 poundsof U.S. soybeans.

• Every pound of U.S. beefexported represents theutilization of 5.6 poundsof U.S. feedgrains.

• A 1 percent increase inthe export of U.S. redmeats increases theutilization of U.S.

Mission Statement

1. Total Carcass Utilization: Maximize returns at eachlink in the marketing chain by building exportdemand for value added products and the completerange of red meat items, especially those that areunderutilized in the U.S. market.

2. Trade Support: Gather and disseminate marketintelligence and facilitate contact between U.S.exporters and targeted buyers in export markets.

3. Buyer Education and Loyalty: Educate targeted buyersin export markets on the attributes of U.S. red meatand red meat products and build buyer loyalty toproducts exported from the United States.

4. Market Presence: Increase the presence of U.S. redmeat and red meat products in the HRI and retailsectors in targeted export markets.

5. Product Image: Establish positive images for U.S. beef,pork and lamb with consumers in targeted exportmarkets.

6. Market Access: Secure meaningful, sustained access tonew and existing export markets using all availablemeans.

To increase the value and profitability of the U.S. beef,pork and lamb industries by enhancing demand for theirproducts in targeted export markets through a dynamicpartnership of all stakeholders.
