• Declaration of Independence Divided
American People
– Patriots: Supported independence and made up
of about half the population of the colonists
– Loyalist: opposed independence
– Most Native Americans opposed the
revolutionaries.
Events of the War
• Battle of New York City
– General William Howe and Admiral Richard Howe Defeated Washington’s Army in New York City in August 27, 1776.
– Washington Retreated to Pennsylvania
• Battle for Trenton
– Continental Army defeated Hessians and captured their weapons on Christmas eve 1776.
– Redcoats were also driven out of Princeton
Events of Revolutionary War• Battle for Philadelphia
– British captured Philadelphia in Spring 1777.
• Battle of Saratoga: A Turning Point– October 17, 1777 General Gates of Continental
Army Defeated General Burgoyne.– Americans got good supply of Weapons– France Recognized American independence and
signed an alliance in 1778
• Winter at Valley Forge for Washington.– Suffered from the lack of food and clothing.
