  • Welcome to Bombay Hook National Wildlife RefugeThe refuge was established in 1937 as a link in the chainof refuges extending from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.The refuge has 16,251 acres located along the Atlanticflyway and provides feeding, resting, and breedinggrounds for migrating birds and other wildlife. Thevariety of habitats welcomes a variety of wildlifethroughout the year.

    The refuge is open 1/2-hour before sunrise to 1/2-hourafter sunset. The visitor center is open weekdays from8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on spring (March-May) and fall(September-November) weekends from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00p.m. The visitor center is closed on federal holidays.

    WildlifeSpring - Look for migrating waterfowl, song birds, andshorebirds. Spring peepers and wood frogs are in fullvoice.

    Summer - Look for herons, egrets, avocets, black-neckedstilts, bald eagles, and birds of prey. Wood duck andmallard broods are present.

    Fall and Winter - Look for Canada and snow geese,swans, pintails, shovelers, teals, ruddy ducks,buffleheads, mallards, and black ducks. Mammals,amphibians, reptiles, fish, and lush flora are prevalentfrom spring into late fall.

    TrailsWildlife Drive - 12 milesVehicles, Bicycle, Walking – Drive along diverse habitats,including freshwater man-made pools, salt marshes,woodlands, and fields. Five trails are accessible along thewildlife drive. All trails are flat terrain.

    Raymond Tower Trail - .25 mileWalking – 30 ft. high observation tower. Forest andupland field

    Boardwalk Trail Over the Salt Marsh - .25 mileWalking – Tidal salt marsh

    Parsons Point Trail - 1 mileWalking –Freshwater marsh and forest.

    Bear Swamp Trail - .25 mileWalking - 30 ft. high observation tower and floatingplatform. Forest and freshwater marsh.

    Shearness Tower Trail - .25 mileWalking – 30 ft. high observation tower. Forest andupland field
