Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge2019-2020 Hunting
We allow hunting of multiple species on designated areas of the refuge subject to certain conditions.
Approximately 290 acres of the refuge will be open to hunting in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations as published annually by the Massachusetts Division of Fish and Wildlife (MassWildlife). This area is divided between two parcels (see maps): Bufflehead Bay parcel (284.4 acres) and Conboy parcel (5.5 acres). A conservation easement on Town of Mashpee land nearby the Mashpee High School will remain closed to hunting (54 acres).
Please refer to the Massachusetts Hunting Guide for clothing requirements, definition of approved weapons, bag limits, license requirements, and other important information. Contact MassWildlife at (508) 389-6300 or check their web page at https://www.mass.gov/hunting-regulations.
Allowed SpeciesMigratory Game: Sora rail, Virginia rail, Wilson’s snipe, ducks, geese, American coot, American woodcock may all be hunted on both parcels in accordance with State regulations.
Big Game: White-tailed deer and wild turkey may be hunted on the Bufflehead Bay and Conboy parcels in accordance with specific State regulations.
Upland Game: Coyote, fox, raccoon, opossum, gray squirrel, quail, pheasant, crow and ruffed grouse all may be hunted on both parcels in accordance with specific State regulations, with the exception of night hunting. No rabbit hunting is permitted due to the presence of New England Cottontails, a species of conservation concern.
Permits No refuge-specific permit will be required for hunting on the refuge. A valid Massachusetts hunting license is required.
Access Hunters will self-navigate to their location.
Reminders Hunting hours on the refuge will be one-half hour
before legal sunrise to one-half hour after legal sunset.
Refuge lands are closed to night hunting. We allow the use of dogs for retrieving migratory
game birds. The refuge prohibits organized deer drives. We define a “deer drive” as an organized or
planned effort to pursue, drive, chase, or otherwise frighten or cause deer to move in the direction of
any person(s) who is part of the organized or planned hunt and known to be waiting for the deer.
