5. Teach the Topic CULTURE CUISINE (13minsES-13minsMS)•Start the class by reminding the students of the course theme - the study of culture cuisine.

•Culture is made up of the shared values, beliefs, behaviors, activities, and traditions of a group of people. •Each group can be defined in different ways. •For example, what you eat at home on a regular basis is different than what you eat during the holidays. •You will explore several celebrations and their traditional foods. You will also share the stories behind the foods we eat.•We are also learning about our friends in China. •They do some things in ways that are similar to our culture and other things in ways that are different. •Today we will be talking about cuisine culture that we may choose to share with our Chinese friends. •There are many kinds of food in America – not just McDonalds and KFC. There are several foods that you eat that came from America. •America is an immigrant nation; the food they eat is rich in diversity.

5. Teach the Topic CULTURE CUISINE (13minsES-13minsMS)

Notes to Teacher: We want to teach about Cultural Cuisine. Ask students: 1. WHY this cuisine exists, 2. Why it is SIGNIFICANT, 3. and WHAT it says about the culture.

We eat to survive. But food is more than just that! Food is an important part of our life and our culture. We eat certain foods because of where we live. We eat regular meals and we eat snacks. We have special family recipes. We eat foods to celebrate. The foods we eat, the way they are prepared, especially for special occasions, reflect our culture.

6. Introduce the assignment – Explore/Research/Example (5minsES/5minsMS)

•Tell each student that they will produce 1-2 PPT slides on an assigned topic and question. •Suggest that they think about what they might want to write and the images they want to use for next week. •You have 5 different topics and 5 questions for each topic. There are many different methods of assigning student work. •We recommend that you divide your class into 5 equal groups and assign a group leader for each group. Assign each group a topic: you may write each topic on a piece of paper, place the topics in a bag, and then have the group leader draw from the bag. •Assign each student a specific question. To keep students engaged when assigning specific questions, you can have the students count off (one, two, three, four, five) and then assign the questions with the same number. •Suggest that they think about what they might want to write and the images they want to use before your next class meeting.
