Grade, (or condition) is a measurement of a coin’s state ofpreservation (or quality). In most cases, the higher a coin’sgrade, the more scarce it is , since the majority of coins findtheir way into extensive circulation. And the higher a coin’squality, the greater its value, since the original design andappearance are more fully present.

Hobbyists collect coins in a variety of grades, based ontheir individual preferences and budgets. Coins in differentgrades command different prices depending on the series, scarcity, and demand. Below are general descriptions forcirculated grades, as well as attributes of both Uncirculatedand Proof coins. However, combinations of subtle differences can make up various ranges within a grade.

CIRCULATED COINSCirculated coins have been used to some extent in dailycommerce and have some “wear” from handling. Becauseolder and scarcer U.S. coins may be very difficult to locatein mint Uncirculated condition, circulated coins may bettersuit your need for some coin series and issues. The gradesfor circulated U.S. coins are described as follows:

YYOUROUR GGUIDEUIDE TTOO U.S. CU.S. COINOIN GGRRADINGADING

GoodCoin will have a fully readabledate. The rims will be nearly fulland may be worn down to thetops of the letters. The design ofthe coin will be fully outlined.

UNCIRCULATED AND PROOF COINS

UncirculatedUncirculated coins have neverbeen in circulation, so they exhibitno wear and display all of the original details. Generally moreexpensive than circulated coins, they represent greater quality andscarcity. Uncirculated grades

range from MS-60 Typical to MS-70 Perfect. Most specimens range from MS-60 to MS63+, as very fewcoins meet the technical standards for MS-65 or higher.

ProofsProof is not a grade, but a methodof minting coins that represents thepinnacle of the minter’s art. Proofcoins are made by a special processthat uses carefully selected coinblanks and dies. The blanks areslowly fed into a specially adaptedpress, then struck at least twice to produce high-relieffeatures contrasted against deep mirror-like surfaces.Later, they are packaged for collectors only.

About UncirculatedWear is evident only on the highest points of the design(points that extend the highestabove the surface). There may be abundant mint luster.

4

Very GoodCoin will have a fully defined rim and full legends with all thelettering and numerals distinct. Some detail in the design of thecoin will begin to show.

FineModerate wear will be evident. The date will be bold and all letters and legends will be clear.Major elements in the design will show some separation.

Very FineApproximately two-thirds of the coin’s overall design will be visible. The date, letters, andmajor elements of the designwill be sharply defined.

Extra FineAll elements in the design willbe clearly visible. There may bemint luster evident, especially around the edges of the design. The high points of the designwill be slightly worn.
