Gilmerton GoveThis series of Scottish caves

has no clear purposeother than bafflinq historians.

The Edinburgh suburb of Gilmerton was at

one time a thriving mining community, but thereare a series of caves and passages beneath the vil-lage that were dug for some mysterious purpose

that certainly did not involve larming ore.

Known collectively as Gilmerton Cove, thenetwork of seven chambers and numerous passages

that run beneath the suburb has baflled historianssince its discovery. The entrance to the undergroundsite is known to have been underneath a 1oca1

blacksmith's residence at one time which has led toa number oftheories. Among the popular specula-

tions about the caves is that they were a place forthe gentry to drink discreetly, that they were a hid-ing place for religious refugees, or that the space

was a smuggler's lair. The hand-carved caves wereopened as of 2003 as a tourist attraction so any

aspiring historic detectives are welcome to explorethe caves and decide for themselves.

Know Before You GoGilmerton is just outside Edinburgh. Grab a

bus from Princes Street or North Bridge- the 3 orthe 29 (heading to Mayfield and Gilmerlon respec-

tively). Both take you to the LIDL supermarket, which is diagonally opposite the little white cot-

tage that's comected to the Ladbrokes shop. Thatcottage is the entrance to the site!

band. "He came ready to play at the top level,"Green said. In competition, the band performedsuch classics as The Sheepwife, Highland Wed-

ding, and The Cockerel in the Creel. It also didcontemporary jigs, hompipes, and polkas. Greenrecalled, "Bil1 definitely preferred the militarymarches."

Playing the bagpipes is notoriously diffrcult."People who start out on bagpipes are like babyturtles going out into the ocean," Green said. "Mostof them don't make it."

Playing competitively, as Ban did, is both time-consuming and ex-pensive. (To keep hispipes liom drying up,Bar would have had

to play every day forat least halfan hour.)Charlie Glendinning, who also piped withBan, said that a kiltalone cost upward offive hundred dollars.

When thegroup travelled toScotland, for theworld champion-ships, the airfare was

thirty grand. "Wecould only affordtravelling every fouryears," Glendinning said. "Competitions at theWorld Pipe Band Championships were our Olym-nlcs."

The City of Washington Pipe Band may be

the best evidence we have of a "deep state." Baffwas in the Justice Depaftment. Green was a seniorofficial in George W. Bush's Administration.("Condi Rice, my boss, would go to piano camp

every summer, so she said it was O.K. for me to do

bagpipes," Green explained.)"There were members ofthe intelligence com-

munity and the labor rurions, a Secret Service agent,

and a congressional general counsel.

"Glendinning recalled a piper who was "an

F.B.I. agent with a specialty in human-flesh decom-position."

Jon Quigg, one of the band's drurnmers, re-membered prepping for a performance in Barr'soffice "the same space that R.F.K. had occupiedthirty years earlier." He added, "Heady experience?"

Barr quit competing in the late eighties, whenthings began to heat up at the Justice Department."He'd come to watch us practice and compete, withhis entourage ofsecurity, but he couldn't keep play-ing," Green said. In 1991, when Balr was appointed

Attorney Generalfor the first time, byGeorge H. W. Bush,he invited the bandto play at his swear-ing-in. "We marched

in and played a med-

ley oftunes," Green

said. Bush madesome wisecracks inhis speech, and said,of his bagpipingA.G, "I'm wonder-ing ifhe understands

that the Constitutionprohibits cruel and

unusual punish-ment."

The band iscurrently on hiatus,

but old members still meet up to jam. SometimesBan talks about getting the band back together,

Glendinning said. A few years ago, Ban bought a

set of -matching chanters-the bagpipe mouth-piece-and a fleet of drums, for all the out-to-pas-ture pipers. "Let's make real music again," he toldthem, in a note.'Not this modem, gimmicky stuffthat all the bands are playing these days."

Ban still likes to host ceilidhs-big Scottish-music parties complete with pipes, fiddles, and

whiskey. The most recent one took place last Oc-tober. "He invited Celtic musicians from Scotland.

on his own dime, to join us," Green said. Twomonths later, Ban got the call from the President.

"I was over at his house when he told me that Trumphad asked him to be the new Attorney General,"Glendinning recalled. "I said, 'Take it! Your coun-try needs you!'But on my way home, in the car,

the toll of such a j ob-not just on Bill but on hisfamily-as well as having to leave the comforls ofsemi-retirement, began to gnaw at me." Glendinninghad trouble sleeping that night, and sent Barr an e-

There were some noteworthy structures alongthe trail. Like this bridge at Latheronwheel harbour, orthis public wellfrom 1866 at

A whale bone arch.

According to local legend, around L420, Helen

of Braemore was betrothed to Alexander Gunn. The

chief of the (eith clan from nearby Ackergill wanted herfor himself, and kidnapped her on the eve ofthewedding, In the ensuing battle, Alexander was one ofthose slain by the Keiths. Distraught by her kidnappingand the death of her betrothed, Helen threw herselffrom Ackergill Tower (nowadays a B&B), into the sea.

Supposedly her ghost still haunts the tower, and thegate leading from the tower gardens to the sea is stillcalled Helen's Gate.

Subsequent conflicts between the two clans

continued after this for two decades u ntil 1464, when itwas decided that a battle of champions would be foughtbetween twelve men on horseback from either clan. ltwas to take place near the site of St. Tears Chapel. On

Continued on page 37

the day, the Keiths arrived with two men on each horse, thus outnumbering the Gunns 2 to 1. lt was a massacre,

with all of the Gunns slaughtered on a day in which thesanctitv of the chapel was violated, and its walls ran red

with blood. Grudges in the Highlands can last a longtime. lt was not until the clans finally signed a treaty in

1978, that the feud ended after more than 500 years.

Helen's Gate and the monument at the site of St. Tears

Chapel are shown here. The JoG trail

One of the things seen along the trail is thisstatue of Henry Sinclair.

He is of the lineage of the St. Clair/Sinclair clan. The northern arm of the family was based near wherewe live in Scotland and Sinclair Castle is also alongthe trail.

There are several interesting things about oldHenry.

Many historians are convinced that North Americawas discovered by the Norse, long before Columbussailed in that direction There is evidence to indicatethat Norse sailors landed in Greenland and along theCanadian coast as far south as Nova Scotia, just after1400. Now, here is the interesting bit: during the late1300s and early 1400s, when Henry represented thenorthern Sinclair clan, he was also Jarl (Earl) of Orkney- and in those days the Orkney lslands still belonged toNorway.

Legend says that it was Henry Sinclair who ledthe expedition on behalf of the King of Norway (towhomhe was related on his maternal side). And, that helanded in Greenland, becoming the first European toset foot in North Ameria. This theory is supported by

carvings, among the many plants and flowers in thestonework of Rosslyn Chapel, which look distinctly likeNorth American plants that do not grow in Europe. The

World War 2 Bunkers.

Where did thename "America"reallv come from?

We were al1 taught that the name "America"came from the Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci .

There is now argument put forth by Britishwriter Peter MacDonald, that America was named

for a Welsh merchant, fuchard Amerike, who gave

a large amount of money to John Cabot's 15tr'cen-

tury \ olage to the Neu Wor'ld.

Cabot sailed from Bristol, England, whichwas also Amerike's home and business headquar-

ters. Amerike donated large oak trees from hisestate to build Cabot's ships and provided Cabot'sfamily with a home while the explorer sailed west.

In exchange for his generosity, Amerike re-quested that Cabot name any newly-discovered

lands for him. You can find more on histheory at <wwwbbc.co.uk/history/discovery/ex-ploration/americaname_0 l.shtml>
