HONOR ING THE PAST . . . LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTUREResourceful and hard-working people invested in the Ursuline Centre over 100 years ago, a monument to faith and culture which touches the hearts of visitors daily. I remain honored to serve as Executive Director for this organization. Sometimes, it is the smallest changes which can make the biggest impact, such as our amazing

cook (see page 4) or our new website (u-centre.org). Con-versely, a few “major changes” have not changed our overall operations very much at all.

As you may know, the Ursuline Centre Historical Foun-dation purchased the property in December of 2014. The Foundation leases the facility back to the Ursuline Centre, a new 501(c)3 non-profit which oversees the operations of the retreat center, preschool and programmatic partnerships. (Previously, the operations were a ministry of the Western Province of the Ursuline Order.) The overall mission of the Ursuline Centre remains the same. The happy voices of children resound on the playground each morning, Mass is celebrated regularly in the Chapel, and the excitement of activities in the evenings and on weekends continues.

The leadership of the Board of Directors of the Ursuline Centre is quite simply phenome-nal. I want to thank Jan Bagley, Sean Donnelly, Joyce Jewett, Dick Martin, Joe Pipinich, Sr. Francis Porter, Bill Ramsey, Rob Schulte, Tom Wald, and Doug Wilson for their constant and stable leadership. Their combined wis-dom and tenacious hope for the current and future success of the Ursuline Centre inspires me every day.

Looking to the future, the Board engaged CCS, the larg-est Catholic fundraising organization in the country, to complete a feasibility study for a new capital campaign. This campaign will cover the purchase of the property, and address maintenance and preservation projects through-out the building. At their recommendation, the Board hired a Capital Campaign Director to be-gin work on this campaign. We welcome Kristen McGuire in her new role here, which she began May 4. I know she has had an opportunity to meet many of you already.

Part of the campaign is oriented toward upgrades in our dor-mitories, kitchen and meeting rooms to accommodate an in-crease in demand for our facility. Notably, we are partnering with Great Falls Central Catholic High School to provide room and board for foreign exchange students, as well as boarders from across the state of Montana. (see page 4 for details.) For decades, the Ursuline Centre was a home away from home for so many in this vast state, and I am delighted to welcome a new generation.

Your prayers, volunteer time, and contributions are the seeds which are producing a fruitful harvest. May you be richly blessed for your generosity, inspired by the legacy of the past, and excited and encouraged for the incredible future that you are helping create. NEWS AND NOTES

Dear friends of the Ursuline Centre,

I am grateful to each and every one of our amazing Ursuline Centre volunteers for both the St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser at the HiHo Tavern, and the Mother’s Day brunch. Our success includes celebrating feasts together with joy. Each volunteer and each donation helps us to carry on the Ur-suline tradition of hospitality. I was particularly thrilled that reporters from the Great Falls Tribune and KRTV visited us on Mother’s Day to help us tell our story.

My story includes a husband, Dr. Dan McGuire of UGF, and eight wonderful children. I grew up in Oregon, graduated from Georgetown University and Wesley Theological Seminary, and converted to the Catholic faith in 1992. We moved to Great Falls in 2007, and I have been a freelance writer and editor for most of that time. My young-est child, Timmy, went to preschool at the Ursuline, and my son Patrick had his 2012 senior music recital here.

Joining the Ursuline staff as a “friend-raiser” is a dream come true. I look forward to celebrating feasts with you regular-ly, and again, THANK YOU for all you do to make the Ursuline a special place.

Sincerely,

SPR ING PROGRAMS, F I E LD TR I PS AND FUN DAY!The halls of the Ursuline Centre were filled with music May 21 and 22, with the Preschool Spring Programs. For some children, stage presence is natural, but for many, it can be a source of anxiety. The teachers acclimated students to the stage by frequent visits and practices in the weeks before the concert. As you can see, they did a great job performing for a full house in our auditorium!

HURRY! REG ISTRATION FOR 2015-16 PRE-KINDERGARTEN CLASSES IS STI LL OPEN!Although nearly half of the open desks for the 2015-16 school year are already taken, we are eagerly seeking more students to join us in the Fall 2015. Registration packets are online at our website: www.u-centre.org, under the School Tab. Or pick up an application at the Ursuline Centre, 2300 Central Avenue in Great Falls. You may also call the school office at 452-8585 to schedule a personal tour of the school.

SCHOOL NEWS

Two field trips wrapped up our preschool year. We spent a morning at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art. After a guided tour of the galleries, students were able to produce their own masterpieces representative of exhib-its in the galleries. We also toured Giant Springs State Park and the fish hatchery with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Students learned the life cycle of fish native to Montana. They also viewed the tanks housing live fish in various developmental stages. Exploratory field trips are an important extension of our curriculum, reinforc-ing lessons taught throughout the year with valuable hands-on experiences. The last day of school was Fun Day! From Bounce Houses to Bubbles and Face Painting, followed by an all school lunch, the students spent the morning cele-brating the end of a school year and remembering their great year at the Ursuline.

TR IC IA SOMMER W INS ‘ONE CLASS AT A TIME’ GRANT!The Ursuline Centre Preschool had special visitors in early May-- Billie Jo Groskreutz of First Interstate Bank and reporter DaVonte McKenith of KRTV, to award a “One Class at a Time” grant of $250 to Tricia Sommer. Sommer has been teaching at the Ursuline Centre for five years, and plans to purchase an art drying rack for her busy pre-kindergarteners. “We lay out a huge sheet for the kids to make their projects on, and sometimes kids will step on a finished product, especially with such a big class.” The new drying rack has stackable bins to contain the finished products.

She says art plays a vital role in her classroom, helping with student expression and their overall development. “Hands-on experiences are so important for their cog-nitive growth. Kids are making so many connections at this age. We don’t just hand them an object and tell them what it is for,” she explains. “We let them explore and give them the opportunity to make it meaningful.”

The grant is awarded weekly during the school year, and the presentation of the award is broadcast on Monday evenings on KRTV. You can find the link to the broad-cast on the Ursuline Centre’s facebook page.

FEATURESFORE IGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS FROM GREAT FALLS CENTRAL CATHOLIC H IGH SCHOOL TO L I V E AT THE URSULIN E CENTRE TH IS FALLUGF student Kyler Brown is excited to be a new father—a house parent, that is! He is the Foreign Exchange Program Manager overseeing male students who will study at Great Falls Central Catholic High School (GFCCHS) and live at the Ursuline Centre this fall. “I am truly excited!” he enthuses. The current students (see picture) lived at the old rectory at Holy Family Church for the 2014-15 school year, but will move in to the Ursuline Centre in mid-August.

A Utah-based company, Elite Education Global, helps GFCCHS with the application process and placement of students. Vickie Donisthorpe, Principal of GFCCHS, visited China recently to meet prospective students and their parents. “Whole families are crammed in such small apartments,” she notes. “They live simple, humble lives, and are investing everything in their child’s education.”

Students from rural Montana will also be living at the Ursuline this fall, just as they did many decades ago. Lucille (Sandee) Bartley was a boarding student at the Ursuline Academy. “I went to school all morning, and then worked at Columbus Hospital down the street all afternoon to pay my board.” She has fond memories of the Sisters and even the rules. “I wasn’t one of those who broke the rules,” she smiles. “I was happy there.”

Principal Donisthorpe has rules, too. The girls will also have a house parent, and will live on a separate floor in the Ursuline’s east wing. Sr. Francis Xavier

Porter still retains her apartment on the third floor, but welcomes the young people just as she did many years ago as a teacher. Helping parents make an investment in education is a long tradition at the Ursuline Centre. May the next generation of alumni prosper!

MEET SHAD WOLF, H EAD COOKHired in 2012, Shad has worked for the Great Falls Public Schools as well as the Elks Club kitchen.

He was born in Havre and raised in Great Falls, the oldest of six children. He now has two children of his own. He recommends teaching kids to cook by starting with easy favorites like scrambled eggs and French toast on the weekends.

A renaissance man, Shad also has an associate degree in computer science. He jokes that he was “Cisco-certified”….and now he is “Crisco-certified!”

Shad’s culinary talents range from delicious, healthy meals to just plain TASTY! Staff and visitors alike rave about his “Burger Master” sauce for hamburgers and fries. Shad knows how to make our months water!

SHAD LOVES TO COOK SO MUCH, HE HAD THE MUPPETS’ SWEDISH CHEF TATTOOED ON HIS ARM.
