The Joan Irvine Smith & Athalie R. Clarke Foundation Award for Undergraduate Environmental Reseach will be presented each
year to outstanding Junior or first-semester Senior students, with preference given to students enrolled in Biological Sciences,
or any other relevant undergraduate program at the University of Rhode Island. The award is intended to encourage
outstanding students to engage in research to study ways to preserve and protect the environment and improve the quality of
life. Preference will be given to research related to understanding, protecting, or preserving the coastal, marine and or
freshwater environments. It is expected that the students will perform original research, and at the conclusion of their projects
will write a paper or present a paper or poster session. Also, the awardees will be encouraged to present their reseach at a
professional conference. Rationale: The National Science Foundation and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute have both
identified an opportunity to do undergraduate research as a hallmark of an outstanding undergraduate science program.
Students at URI have been working on projects in the laboratories of their instructors for decades, but the scope of these
projects has been limited by a lack of funding for supplies, small pieces of equipment, etc. The Joan Irvine Smith & Athalie R.
Clarke Foundation Award for Undergraduate Environmental Research will enable outstanding students selected in a
competetive review of proposals to conduct original research supervised by leading URI scientists and scholars. By teaming up

The endowment shall be used to provide support to a graduate of Pittsfield Massachusetts High School. Second preference is
to support a student from Classical High School in Providence, Rhode Island. There are no academic majors/degree areas
attached to the award. If no student from Pittsfield or Classical High Schools qualify in a given year, the Rendine Scholarship is
to be awarded to a qualifying student from the state of Massachusetts or Rhode Island. To qualify for the scholarship, a student
must have achieved at least a 3.00 average, and have a demonstrated financial need. The scholarship is designed to recognize
academic achievement while also addressing a student's financial need. It is also designed to assist URI with its student
recruitment and retention efforts. Thus, a student receiving the Rendine Scholarship as an entering freshman, may receive the
award for each of the four years of his/her undergraduate career, providing the student meets the academic and financial
qualification on a regular basis. This will help deserving students to remain enrolled by assuring some financial support. It
should be noted that a student falling below a 3.00 for a given semester would not be automatically disqualified but would have
a full academic year to fulfill the criterion. The University's Financial Aid Office will determine who receives the award.
