Urey-Miller Experiment
Harold C. Urey
Stanley L. Miller
• tested Alexander Oparin's and J. B. S. Haldane's hypothesis that conditions on the primitive Earth favored chemical reactions that synthesized organic compounds from inorganic precursors
• an experiment that simulated hypothetical conditions thought at the time to be present on the early Earth, and tested for the occurrence of chemical origins of life
• Analysis showed that organic molecules including glycine and alanine (simple amino acids), urea, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids were produced
Urey-Miller Experiment
• conducted in 1952 and published in 1953
Urey-Miller Experiment
The gases used in the experiment are:
Water (H2O)
Methane (CH4)
Ammonia (NH3)
Hydrogen (H2)
Redi Experiment
Francesco Redi
In 1668, Francesco Redi started an experiment with three jars, flies,
maggots, and rotting meat to disprove the theory of
Spontaneous Generation.
Redi Experiment
STEP 1
Redi placed rotting meat in three jars.
The experiment went as follows:
STEP 2
In the first jar, he left the jar open to the air.
Redi Experiment
STEP 3
On the 2nd jar, he placed a cover on the jar.
The experiment went as follows:
STEP 4
On the 3rd jar, he placed a gauze or netting over the jar.
Redi Experiment
Results:1. Unsealed – maggots on meat2. Sealed – no maggots on meat3. Gauze – few maggots on gauze, none on meat
Photosynthesis
PHOTO “LIGHT”=SYNTHESIS
=“PUTTING TOGETHER”
Photosynthesis “putting together with light”. is the process of converting light energy to
chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar.
The overall chemical reaction involved in photosynthesis is:
Photosynthetic organisms are called photoautotrophs.
PhotosynthesisChloroplast
Contains thylakoids
Chlorophyll- the green pigment that captures light
for photosynthesis
Where photosynthesis takes place
The thylakoids contain chlorophyll.
Photosynthesis
PhotosynthesisStages of
PhotosynthesisLight Reaction• or Light Dependent Reaction• Produces energy from solar power
(photons) in the form of ATP and NADPH
PhotosynthesisStages of
PhotosynthesisDark Reaction• Calvin Cycle, Light Independent
Reaction, or Carbon (C3) Fixation• Uses energy (ATP and NADPH) from
light reaction to make sugar (glucose).

What if there will be no
photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis1.There will be no food production.2.The plants can’t filter carbon dioxide,
and humans would keep exhaling it. This would lead to the death of all plants and animals, since plants use photosynthesis to create food for themselves, and humans need oxygen to live.
3.The food cycle would be disturbed as the Food Chain starts with plants as they produce glucose through photosynthesis.
