Next-generation NOx abatement

Hydrocarbon Lean NOx Catalyst System Urea-Free NOx Abatement Technology

Growing emission control challenges require innovative solutions to meet

the unique needs of established and emerging markets alike. Tenneco’s

Hydrocarbon Lean NOx Catalyst (HC LNC) system provides a urea-free

NOx abatement alternative for a wide range of applications and regions.

An alternative to liquid-urea SCR, Tenneco’s HC LNC system uses fuel-based reductants to provide an excellent NOx abatement solution. It leverages the key ingredients of our XNOx™ SCR system–such as the injector, mixer and dosing calibration expertise –while eliminating the need for urea. This makes it an optimal choice for markets without a robust DEF infrastructure, or for remotely located applications where access to liquid urea may not be practical.

The HC LNC system features a proprietary, silver-based alumina catalyst, developed with industry-leading partners GE and Umicore. This novel catalyst can provide NOx conversion

efficiency equivalent to that of liquid urea SCR without the associated challenges.

Designed with a unique dual-reductant dosing capability, the HC LNC system offers significant flexibility. For applications with high duty cycles or that can maintain exhaust temperatures greater than 350°C, the system uses the vehicle’s on-board diesel fuel as the aftertreatment reductant to achieve up to 60% NOx conversion efficiency. To reach NOx conversion efficiencies greater than 95% or when exhaust temperatures range as low as 270°C, the HC LNC uses a secondary, biorenewable reductant such as E85. The flexibility within the system enables the combination of reductants to extend refill intervals, aligning them with regular maintenance to minimize driver intervention.

To further optimize NOx abatement and provide particulate matter emissions control, the HC LNC system can be readily adapted to integrate active thermal management technology, such as Tenneco’s T.R.U.E.-Clean® system.

Forward thinking. Forward moving.

THE ENGINE OF INNOVATION IN CLEAN AIR

At Tenneco, innovation is a hallmark of everything we do. In our advanced clean air technologies and solutions. In our unique, total-system integration expertise and approach. In our commitment to partnership and collaboration. We’re always looking beyond the technology horizon to foresee and develop the next-generation clean air solutions that accelerate our customers’ success and keep them moving toward the future.

From development through delivery and beyond–we help our partners drive transportation innovation, full speed ahead.

A urea-free future: Tenneco, GE & UmicoreTogether with industry leaders GE and Umicore, Tenneco is leading the way

to a future where vehicle and engine manufacturers are not dependent on

urea. As partners in the development of HC LNC’s silver-based catalyst, the

companies have achieved an innovation that successfully reduces NOx to

harmless nitrogen and water, using diesel fuel and biorenewables such as

E85 as the reductant. With this milestone and so many more, Tenneco and

its partners are working to advance clean air solutions around the globe.
