Basic SetupYou can start setting up your Unifier using either the Pre-Programmed Method or the Learning Method. However, all the buttons of the Unifier are setup at oncewith the Pre-Programmed Method, so it is usually fasterthan the one-button-at-a-time Learning Method.

Pre-Programmed Method

Power on the A/V component you wish to setup, so thatyou can test codes by sending power off commands.

Refer to the pre-programmed code tables on pages25 - 46 and write down the code numbers listedfor your A/V component. The code numbers arelisted by categories of devices, then by brand. Seepage 25 for a category list.

Press and hold both the SHIFT and ENT (Enter) buttons for approximately three seconds. The top ofthe display will blink “SET” then one of the eightdevice names. You are in SETUP mode now.

Note: You have 30 seconds to perform a step while you arein SETUP mode. If you don’t press a button within that time, the Unifier will time out and return to normal operation.

For Example: I wanted to setup the TV Device buttonfirst, so I pressed the cursor LEFT or RIGHT until “TV”was flashing on the display.

Point the Unifier at the component, then enter thefirst three digit code number from your notes usingthe numbered buttons. After you enter each threedigit code number, look at the component to see ifit turned off.

Continue to enter code numbers until the component powers off.

For Example: I have a Sony TV. I found the code numbers 070, 139,147, 126, 185, 194 and 085 underSony in the TV TABLE. Using the numbered buttons onthe Unifier, I entered 070 and looked at the TV. It didn’t turn off, so I entered 139, then 147 and so on,until I found the code that powered off the TV.

When the component turns off, save the code number you entered by pressing the LIGHT button.

The Unifier responds by flashing SAVED on thedisplay twice, then returns to normal operatingmode.

When the display shows a device name, you areback in normal operating mode. Now it’s time totest all the buttons. If some buttons don’t work, tryrepeating steps 1-6 with the remaining code numbers, to see if you can improve the match toyour component.

For Example: My Sony TV powered off with TV code number 147. However the number buttons didn’t workwhen I tested them. So, I repeated steps one to six, usingother code numbers and eventually discovered that when

code number 185 is set, all the buttons work perfectly.

Repeat steps one through seven for each of yourdevices. In most systems, you can finish basicsetup in just a few minutes and put all your oldremote controls away.

Volume Control Punch Through

In most home entertainment systems, the sound volume is only controlled by one device. In some systems, it is the TV speakers that make the sound, soyou would use the TV device on the Unifier to raiseand lower the volume. In another system, it might be asurround sound receiver and speakers that control thesound, so you would use the Unifier’s AUDIO deviceto adjust the volume. Constantly switching the Unifierto TV or AUDIO to adjust the volume is inconvenientin daily life.

You can use Punch Through to set the Unifier’s volume buttons to always control the sound in yoursystem. That way when the Unifier is set to VCR orDVD, the volume up, down and mute buttons willwork perfectly without switching back to AUDIO orTV. Here’s how:

Press and hold both the DEVICE button that doesn’t have volume control commands yet andthe MUTE button for about three seconds.

For Example: You want to make the DVD volume buttons

control the sound. Press and hold DVD and MUTE.

Note: You have 30 seconds for each step, otherwise theUnifier will time out automatically.

The Optional Expander

You can use the Unifier as you would your otherremote controls. It transmits very powerful line-of-sightoutput using infrared light commands (invisible to thenaked eye). When you point the Unifier at the components, expect the range to be between 30 and50 feet. When the remote is not pointed in the generaldirection of the components, the range will vary(depending on reflective surfaces, lighting, etc.).

However, the Unifier also sends radio signals inevery direction. By purchasing the optional Expander(a radio receiver), you can operate your equipmentwith the Unifier 50 to 100 feet away (through walls, doors, cabinets, inside or outside). Since theExpander picks up the Unifier's radio signals fromany direction, regardless of distance, the Unifierdoesn’t have to be pointed!

Nothing has to be done to the Unifier for this feature to work. Every time you press a button on theUnifier, it sends both a standard infrared commandAND a radio signal. If you install the Expander kit, theMRF-100 will receive the Unifier’s radio signals andtranslate them into the infrared commands that controlyour components.

Note: The Unifier's radio signals will not control components directly. You must have an Expander to receive the Unifier's radio signals. Components that came with "no pointing" radio remote controls cannotbe operated by the Unifier unless the component can be switched to standard infrared control via its internalmenus. Some remote control ceiling fans are radio only andcannot be operated by the Unifier.

The Expander converts radio signals to standardinfrared commands and sends them out via a built-in front blaster to components in the samecabinet space.

The Unifier sendsradio signal to theExpander, which is aradio receiver.

Self-adhesive “flashers” (included in theExpander kit) affix to the front panels ofyour components. The flashers relayinfrared commands to components out-of-sight of the MRF-100 front blaster. The flashers plug into the MRF-100 rearflasher line output jacks. Each flasherhas a 10’ cable to easily reach compo-nents on nearby shelves.

Pre-Programmed Code Tables

The Unifier’s Pre-Programmed code library is classifiedby category (TV, VCR, AUX, etc.). Each category actuallyincludes many types of components. For example, theSAT category includes satellite receivers and digital videorecorders like TiVo and Replay.

Within each category, the code numbers are listed inrows by brand (Sony, Panasonic, B & K, etc.). Somebrands have more than one three digit code for you totry. Just circle the correct row and refer to it while yousetup (step-by-step instructions for using Pre-Programmedcodes are found on page 5).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the display change whenever youpress the buttons at the top of the remote?

The Unifier is actually eight remote controls in one. TheLCD display shows you which of your components it iscurrently set to control. When you press one of theeight DEVICE buttons (those labeled AUDIO, CD,DVD, etc.), the Unifier changes the functions of all ofother buttons to control that component.

Why does the display flash at me sometimes?

The Unifier has an extra “hidden” command (usually apower user or hobbyist feature) on some of your buttons. This command is issued instead of the normalcommand if you press the SHIFT button first. Once youhave pressed the SHIFT button, the display will flashfor ten seconds. If you press it by accident, you canstop the SHIFT flashing by pressing the SHIFT button orthe LIGHT button.

Can I program the Unifier on a computer?

No, the Unifier is only programmed by the methodsexplained in this manual and the Quick Setup DVD

tutorial.

What is a “Macro”?

A “macro” is a very useful way to make a lot of thingshappen with one button push. For example, in mosthome theaters to watch television, the user must turnon the TV, then turn on the Cable Box or the SatelliteReceiver, then turn on the Surround Sound system forsound. Instead of pressing all of those buttons one at a

time, the Unifier enables you to “record” all of them toplay back with one button push. For more informationon how and why you should program macros, watchthe Quick Setup DVD tutorial or read pages 17-18.

If the batteries run out, will I lose my settings?

No. The Unifier stores all of your settings in non-volatileFLASH memory. You could remove the batteries formonths, replace them at your convenience and theUnifier would still remember your settings.

Who can I call for more answers?
