THE LoRa® NETWORK

The Network infrastructure of URBANA is built on LoRa® technology:

Open source wireless technology using public frequencies

High security standard without the need of complex local

installations

Low cost, Low power consumption, Wide range

Specifically developed for IoT applications

LoRa®

Power Line RF Cellular M2M (GSM)

Electrical grid as data communication

infrastructure. Strictly dependent of the

health of electrical cables.

Use unlicensed bands, e.g, 433, 868,

915 MHz.

Very complex and expensive network.

Not designed for machine-type

communication.

Old technology, primarily used for home

automation where there is not strong

attenuation

Limited coverage radius (~ 100-200

meters)

The network is managed by third party

entity, not under customer’s control.

Can not be deployed where there is no

electrical infrastructure.

Low penetration level (buldings reduces

drastically the coverage radius).

Performance depends on the cell design

already done for different purposes. May

suffer from blank spot areas.

Suffers from interference given by

amplifiers and filters deployed among the

electrical network.

Problems arise when network scales to

higher number of components.

Coverage is similar to other usual radio

technologies.

High transmission power. Network relies totally on the network

provider.

LoRa®

Technology designed for controlling and monitoring purposes and for

deployment of millions of nodes.

Cutting-edge low cost solution.

High coverage radius (up to ~15-20 Km).

High link budget: ~20 dB higher than usual radio technologies.

High penetration level within infrastructures (~2.5 Km indoor coverage radius).

Easy to install.

User has total control of LoRa network.

Integrable with devices that need to be battery efficient (low power).
