Local urban air pollution

• Canyon Street - tightly built streets, where the height of buildings is greater than the width of the carriageway.

• Source of the pollution (stationary or mobile) creates emissions in the local environment and influences human health, as well as affect wildlife and inanimate objects, causing material damages.

• CO, NOx, PM 10/2.5, hydrocarbons (BTX and benzo(a)pyrene) and SO2 are considered to be transport air pollutants in the local environment.

Riga actual activities

• Study on "Use of hydrogen technologies in Riga public transport, environmental and economic aspects”

• HIT 2 – Corridors Hydrogen Infrastructure for Transport. Project will realise HRS in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Voikoski (in Finland) and new implementation plans for Finland, Riga, Poland and Belgium.

• “H2 nodes” – Riga part is Trolleybus backup traction power providing diesel generator replacement with equivalent power hydrogen fuel cells to obtain hybrid hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle with zero emissions.

• “NewBusFuel” - Engineering studies for large scale bus refuelling Development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure.

• "Commercialization Strategy for Fuel Cell Electric Buses in Europe” - Program of Fuel cell electric bus implementation in Riga public transport fleet development

Electric Buses in Europe

Riga City Council and Municipal LLC "Rīgas Satiksme” participate in the FCH JU supported "Commercialization Strategy for Fuel Cell Electric Buses in Europe" as consortium partners in order to make a decision, based on experience and knowledge, on the most suitable zero-emission transportation solutions for the passenger transport and to help the country to achieve the CO2 reductions till 2020, set by the EU, taking into account the existing infrastructure in Riga and economic feasibility of action.

• Introduction of low carbon (low capacity) alternative fuels, which focus on excluding of the carbon from the fuel, as the carbon creates the largest percentage of pollution and pollutes the environment with coal and its compounds (soot, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide CO, carbon dioxide CO2).

• The transition to hydrogen and electricity as an energy carrier marks the start of a new era in the zero-emission transport, characterized by a more efficient use of energy resources and lower environmental pollution, which is the basic guideline for the development of SMART CITIES.

• Pre-feasibility study and technical-economical solutions on the available energy resources and development of the infrastructure.

• Conducted evaluation of existing infrastructure .

• Prepared technical specifications in order to fully ensure fueling, charging and operation of the zero-emission vehicles.

• Evaluation of the existing legislation and adaptation of EU legislation/directives, where experience of other EU cities, regions and municipalities can be very useful.
