How Uranus got its name

After William Herschel discovered this planet in 1782

he didn't know what to name it immediately, so with

some thinking he wanted to name it Georgium Sidus

after King George lll.

Since that name didn't really fit well with the other

planets names, Johann Bode suggested Uranus after

the Greek God of the Sky. This set well among the

astronomers, noting that some of the other planets

are named after Greek Gods. (Venus, Saturn, Earth, etc.)

Uranus’ position and comparison to Earth

Position from the sun:

7th planet from the sun

Distance from the sun:

19.8 AU away from the sun (2.9 billion km)

Diameter: 31,518 miles, 4X bigger than Earth, so if

earth was the size of a nickel then Uranus would be the

size of a softball.

It takes 2 hours and 40 minutes

for the sun’s light to reach Uranus.

Revolution and rotation of Uranus in Earth

Rotation period (length of day in Earth days)

0.72 (17.9 Earth hours)(retrograde)

Revolution period (length of year in Earth days)

30,685 (84 Earth years)

Composition of surface of Uranus

The internal heat of Uranus is lower

than astronomers would expect.

- Unlike Jupiter and Saturn, which are composed predominantly of

hydrogen and helium, Uranus contains only a small portion of these

light elements.

The Travels

The Voyager 2 was the satellite that

discovered all of uranus moons. It flew closely

past uranus.

The closest the moon got to uranus was

81,500 kilometers (50,600 miles) on Jan. 24,

1986.

Since the launch in Aug 20, 1977, Voyager 2

has gone to jupiter in july 1979 saturn in Aug

1981 and then uranus. The both Voyager 1 and

2 will go off out of our solar system into

interstellar space.

7th planet from the sun

It takes almost nine and a half years to get to uranus.

The sun's light passes through the atmosphere is reflected by uranus’

clouds, methanes gas absorbs the red portion of light, causing a blue-green

color. Uranus is the 7th planet from sun so it’s very cold and windy.

Uranus’ magnetic fields are tipped over. It’s tilted nearly 60 degrees from

the planet's’ axis of rotation.

It takes 84 years for Uranus to get around the sun once.

63 earths can fit in Uranus.

Summer in Uranus is 42 years long.

Wind speeds can reach 560 mph.

First planet to be found with a telescope.

Even though it’s hard,it is possible to see uranus without a telescope.

How Uranus formedWith the rise of the sun, small particles drew together bounded by the force of gravity. Solar wind swept away all the lighter elements like hydrogen and helium, leaving only heavy rocky planet formation near the sun. But in the distant solar system it's so cold gaseous planets formed. The rocky core most likely formed first then the hydrogen, helium, and methane atmosphere.
