    The University of La Rioja (UR) currentlyteaches 7,500 students enrolled in oneof its 26 officially recognised degreecourses and postgraduate courses andprogrammes for masters degrees anddoctorates. The campus occupies a uni-que area within the city of Logroo, ca-pital of La Rioja, and it is an ideal sizefor the integral training and developmentof the student.

    Some time between the 10 th and 11thcenturies, in the Monasteries of SanMilln de la Cogolla, declared a World

    Heritage Site in 1996, the first knownwords in Spanish language were writtenby monks preserved in the Codices 60and 46 and it was here that the firstknown poet, Gonzalo de Berceo lived.Our emblem is formed by the initials of the University of La Rioja using the calli-graphy of the two codices.

    The University of La Rioja (UR) currently teaches 7,500 students enrolled in one of its26 officially recognised degree courses and postgraduate courses and programmesfor masters degrees and doctorates. It is the only campus in the Autonomous Regionof La Rioja, a modern region situated in the North of Spain.

    Founded in 1992, the University of La Rioja has established a campus model whichis specially designed to benefit the conditions of study of its alumni, as well as theteaching and research work of its almost five hundred teachers.

    The campus is located on a 200,000 square metre site a stones throw from the centreof the city of Logroo, (capital of La Rioja) and fully integrated into its urbandevelopment. Surrounded by large open spaces and lawns, the campus groupstogether all the University buildings, from the administration building to the library,sports centre or classrooms and lecture halls.

    Teachers and students can easily get around it on foot. Thus, the University of La Riojaoffers ideal conditions for study based on a ratio of students per class which encouragesclose contacts with teachers, free access to computer rooms in each building, newlyinaugurated sports facilities, and special discounts in shops for university students.

    The key to our teaching system is thecreation of the conditions necessary forthe individualised, integral training of our students. In the University of La Riojawe instil professionals with the criticalspirit that todays world demands.

    At the beginning of their studies, eachstudent is assigned a personal tutor orsupervisor, a teacher from his degreecourse who provides guidance and su-pport during the period of study. Mo-reover, during the so-called InductionProgramme for new students, they recei-

    ve information and guidance regardingthe services and facilities available oncampus (library, computer rooms, studyareas, sports hall, multimedia laboratory,language laboratory, etc.) and the cha-racteristics of their courses.

    Throughout their courses, students atthe University of La Rioja can choose aseries of studies that make up the vario-us different Curricular skills (Legal, Scien-tific and Technical English, InformationTechnology, Communication and Mana-gerial Skills) while, with the support of a personal supervisor, they can designtheir own professional profile by takingadvantage of the offer of subsidiary andoptional elective courses.

    The University of La Rioja complementsthe theoretical training of the studentswith period of practical work placementsin companies, evaluated as part of theacademic curriculum. The campus hasagreements with 1,000 local companiesand bodies with which it has links toprovide, in practice, work experience to75% of all students. It is the first stepto access to the jobs market.

    The University of La Rioja participates in international student mobilityschemes, such as Socrates (Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci) orAmericampus, and has also signed bilateral agreements withother campuses. This makes it possible for the Universityof La Rioja, every year, to offer its students the chanceto complement their studies in 94 universities in aroundthirty regions of Europe, Americaand Australia.

    internationalThe University of La Rioja only requires that its students who want to study abroadshall have passed a third of the academic content of their degree course. In return,the experience gives them courses to improve their knowledge of the language of thecountry they will be studying in, advice on accommodation and maintenance, as wellas a grant co-funded by the European Union and Caja Rioja savings bank.

    The European Credit Transfer System grew out of the Socrates-Erasmus programme,but it has equivalence for students from outside Europe. It includes the time dedicatedto attending classes, private study, preparation and sitting of examinations, etc.

    The ECTS scheme allows the University of La Rioja and the rest of the campuses, toguarantee the education of those students who travel from their country of origin.Based on the students workload, it facilitates student mobility by making theprogrammes of study comprehensible and comparable for local and foreign students.

    The size of the campus, located withinthe boundaries of a city of just 147,000inhabitants, guarantees an ideal atmos-phere of cultural immersion for learningSpanish as a Foreign Language. The Au-tonomous Region of La Rioja has thehonour of being the home of the monas-teries of Yuso and Suso in San Milln dela Cogolla.

    Two teachers from the University of LaRioja presented a study which placedthe date of the origin of the Spanishlanguage a century earlier than previo-usly thought, as a result of their resear-ch on Codex 46, an invaluable medievalencyclopaedia with marginal notes writ-ten in a form of Low Latin full of errorsand vulgarisms, which can be regardedas the earliest form of the Castilianlanguage.

    researchResearch at the University of La Riojahas its roots in the distinguishing featu-res of our Autonomous Region. The qua-lity of Rioja appellation wines led to thecreation of a degree in Oenology, ma-king the University of La Rioja the firstin Spain to offer a university course inthis area.

    The facilities of the modern Science andTechnology Complex, inaugurated bythe King and Queen of Spain, includean experimental winery in which stu-dents and teachers grow vines, makeand bottle their own wine. These facili-ties, currently being expanded, permitresearch and innovation projects to beundertaken for the most important eco-nomic sector of the Autonomous Regionof La Rioja.

    The University of La Rioja manages 90%of the regions research funds and par-ticipates in the subsidised projects of the R&D Plan of La Rioja promoted bythe regional Government.

    The University Library is located at theheart of the campus, only a shortdistance from each building. It has beenawarded one of the very few QualityCertificates given by the Ministry of Education to Spanish universities ingeneral.

    As well as access to reference books inspecial rooms, personal and group studystations or the European DocumentationCentre, the University has also joinedthe DIALNET project. DIALNET is thebiggest data base of freely accessiblescientific articles in the Spanishlanguage. It is constantly being updatedand has a stock of 400,000 articles and10,000 subscribers from the scientificcommunity worldwide.

    The buildings of the University of LaRioja are equipped with computer roomswhich are freely available to students.These rooms have PCs with usefulapplications for the students personalwork and access to Internet. The wholeof the campus area is equipped with Wi-Fi technology permitting access to thenet without cables and lap-topcomputers can also be borrowed.

    The University of La Rioja has understo-od its key role in the development of societies. Since it was founded, it hasintegrated the use of New InformationTechnologies as something natural. It isthe first public Spanish University todeliver official qualifications entirely viaInternet. The first cohorts have gradua-ted and, at the present time, one fifth of its students follow their courses on-linethrough the virtual campus, without anyneed to travel physically to the university.

    This pioneering experience has servedfor the development of other initiatives,such as the Mixed teaching model, whichcombines the traditional system of tea-ching with resources made available tothe students on the Internet. Or the Sha-red Virtual Campus, in which the Univer-sity of La Rioja and eight other Spanishcampuses offer subjects jointly to over200,000 students.

    In the University of La Rioja we are aware that the integral preparation of our studentsrequires complements to academic study, such as sports or cultural activities.

    The University Sports Centre is the heart of the campus sporting spirit. Here it ispossible to take part in official and high performance sports activities individual andteam sports, do activities such as yoga, tai chi, aikido dance, aerobics, keep-fits orexcursions for skiing, canoeing, etc. Our student Sara Martnez was World UniversityGames Champion in Taekwondo in Berkeley (USA) in 2002.

    The Iberdrola Centre for Mineralogyand Palaeontology is a place for disseminatinginformation about fossil remains from sites with dinosaur prints inLa Rioja, considered to be the most abundant in the world. In summer, students takepart in work camps for the restoration and preservation of these prints.

    Leading figures from the world of culture, science and politics pass through theclassrooms of the University of La Rioja over the course of the academic year, forconferences, seminars and workshops. During the summer, activity transfers to othervenues, such as Geneva (Switzerland), Calahorra birthplace of the Roman oratorQuintilian-, Santo Domingo de la Calzada key stopping place on the St. James Way-or Arnedo with its summer courses.

    Students can choose to live in university residences, on the campus itself or in thecentre of the city. The University of La Rioja also provides a web page service withdetails of privately-owned shared flats and rooms to rent for students.

    logrooThe University of La Rioja is on the outskirts of the city, but only a stones throw fromthe centre. Logroo, capital of La Rioja, has a population of 147,000 in its metropolitanarea, and all the services and amenities of a modern capital, but with a comfortable,human size.

    Logroo is about an hours drive from neighbouring cities such as Bilbao or Pamplona.By air, in the same time, there are various daily flights from the local airport toBarcelona or Madrid, Spains capital city, connecting with international flights.
