Upward Bound Program Upward Bound Program This summer Upward Bound Students faced their biggest fears by the end of the summer program, by each giving a courageous speech in the middle of University of Washington’s Red Square. This speech was the culminating project for the Introduction to Public Speaking Course taught by U.W. commu- nications faculty ML Veden, Venessa Au, Diane Beall, Chinu Randhawa and Ben Crosby. Topics bridged health care, immigration, gun control, politics and more. Other courses this summer featured algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, calculus, architecture, computer building, college prep, research, web design, hip hop/ step and ballroom dance. The architecture class built an art exhibit that was displayed at the end of sum- mer in the Olympic Sculpture Park. Twelve students in the computer building class received laptops for successfully demonstrating that they could build a PC computer. The computers they built will go to other students in the pro- gram who are in need of recycled computers for school work. Finally, 15 Upward Bound Bridge students successfully began their first quar- ter at the University of Washington. Having completed 12 credits towards their college degree, they are finally resting before the rush of U.W. Fall Quarter. CONGRATS TO ALL UW UB Students for their hard work this summer! This summer Upward Bound Students participated in various summer academic programs. The Math/Science programs specifically give each student a sense of what it is like to live in a university environment, or focus on a specific academic discipline, while utilizing access to instructors, tutors and resources. If interested in attending an academic enrichment program this coming summer, contact Fina or Donna for apps or info in January. Here are the students who participated in various programs this summer:

Left to right: Allana C. (Hale HS, Seattle Parks Fashion Design Program, ), Phounsouk S. (Franklin H.S., Microsoft Internship), Sabella H. (Franklin H.S.,

One World Leadership Conference). CONGRATS on your success!

UB 2008 Seniors have received over $270,397 in scholarships! Way to go!

Our Upward Bound Atten-

dance expectation is 96%.

This means that you should

not miss more than 4 days of

school per quarter (excused

tition. Students spend about six weeks (plus weekends and after school) researching, writing and creating educational sites using Dream Weaver,

Flash and other interactive applications. Congrats TTQ’ers! Our new com-petitors this year are shown to the left. Last year we took best of Contest in the Nation, as well as gold and silver medals. To See the new winners when

Juniors need to begin seriously looking at the colleges they want to apply to. In addition, if the institution they want requires SAT II Subject Tests, they should see Fina or Donna to register.

The U.W. now has new criteria for college appli-cation. They no longer use an Admissions Index. Major things they will look at include GPA, SAT scores, school and community activities/contributions, economic disadvantage, ability to overcome personal adversity, exceptional creative talent, taking challenging classes and strong personal statements.
