Meet Our Tutors!

Shining Stars

Just a few short weeks after

visiting the University of

Toledo, Debrieana

Jackson was invited to

tour the Honors College!

With aspirations to study

medicine and become a

pediatrician, Debrieana

maintains a 3.8 GPA,

exceeding the eligibility

requirements for consider-

ation for the honors

program!

Similarly, Tyrone Cole-

man has been offered

admission and a $44,000

scholarship to his first

choice school, Indiana

Tech. He recently visited

the campus and met the

track coach, who will be

offering additional scholar-

ships should he decide to

run for their team as he

pursues a degree in

mechanical engineering.

Congratulations seniors!

We are so proud of you!

Is there an Upward Bound

student you know who has

excelled in the classroom, in

the workplace, or in the com-

munity? Tell us about it! Send

a message to Haley Mulka at

[email protected] and each

month we’ll recognize stu-

dents for their outstanding

efforts!

Throughout the semester, a dedicated team of EMU student tutors have been working

with Upward Bound students during College Club, Group Meetings, and Senior Seminar.

These tutors have gone above and beyond to work with your students on homework,

resume writing, portfolio building, and reading skills. We are grateful for their energy and

commitment to Upward Bound!

Summer academy kept students

busy throughout each day with

academic classes, workshops, ACT

preparation, and study sessions.

The evening was time to socialize

and relax with free time as well as

through various structured activi-

ties.

Activities varied each night and

were times for students to display

creativity, build community, & learn

more about the world around

them. The Corner Health Center &

Dispute Resolution Center came

and provided discussion-based

workshops to help students think

about maintaining healthy relation-

ships. T-shirt Design Night encour-

aged students to express them-

selves and make something they

would remember the academy

with. Tradition mandated a basket-

ball game against the esteemed DPS

officers as well as a movie night,

and a new tradition began as one of

our college student Peer Advisors

gave a soccer lesson that turned

into one of the most competitive

athletic events Upward Bound has

participated in.

Save the Date! On February 14,

2014, Upward Bound will be travel-

ing to Michigan State University, so

grab your Spartan gear and join us

for a college tour, lunch in one of

the campus cafeterias, and an inter-

active presentation at the planetar-

ium. Permission slips and more

information will be provided in the

new year.

In November, Dr. Jackson accom-

panied a group of students to the

UNCF Empower Me Tour, a free

event designed to provide re-

sources and motivation for stu-

dents to reach their academic, per-

sonal, and career goals. The full-

day event consisted of scholarship

and financial aid workshops, a col-

lege fair, and several motivational

speakers.
