Editor’s Note“Engineers of UPTU are significantly better than the national average”

MeritTrac-UPTU WATCH Dipstick Study

Would Managers be any less?

Established in the year 2000, Uttar Pradesh Technical University has come a long way by becoming the world’s largest techno-managerial university with over 600 affiliated colleges. While there were a mere

92,000 students who appeared for the UPSEE in 2005, the number has risen to 2,72,000 in 2010. The socio-economic impact made by the UPTU has been phenomenal and unforeseen in any other part of the country.

Excellence of UPTU System The University has an excellent techno-managerial curriculum backed up by an unimpeachable examina-tion system - the hallmarks of any academic institution of excellence. A recently concluded dipstick study conducted by UPTU WATCH in collaboration with MeritTrac has revealed that the engineering talent pool

from UPTU is significantly better than the national average. This certainly validates the quality of education imparted by UPTU Colleges.

UPTU WATCH Admission Guides: Filling in the Information GapA great need was being felt for a product which could give a snapshot information about the UPTU affiliated Colleges for the prospective students seeking admissions in the various Engineering-Management-Pharmacy Courses at the various colleges. Team UPTU WATCH decided to come out with a set of 3 unique admission

guides, one each for the Engineering, Management & Pharmacy domains. This maiden attempt is the humble hard work of a set of a dedicated team which envisions to empower the techno-managerial students from the state of Uttar Pradesh to stand apart and create an exclusive identity

for themselves through their sheer merit. An introduction to the various cities & towns of Uttar Pradesh would certainly make you nostalgic.

How successful we are in this initiative of ours, is for the readers of these guides to judge & comment upon. We are all eager to improve upon in future editions.

Raghav Mittal, Editor - UPTU WATCH, E: [email protected]

We do regret in advance for the various erros which might have crept into despite our best efforts.

Established in the year 2000 the Uttar Pradesh Techni-cal University is a Universe in itself. Spreading from Ghazipur in the East to Noida adjacent of Delhi in the West, from Jhansi in south to Saharanpur in the North, the University spans the entire state of Uttar Pradesh covering an area of around five thousand square kilom-eters.

The Uttar Pradesh Technical University not only con-ducts the biggest examination in the field of Techni-cal Education, it also declares in each semester the result of around 2.5 lakh students in various disci-plines in a record time of approximately one and a half months.

In a recently conducted study by UPTU WATCH in associa-tion with MeritTrac - India’s biggest skill assessment company - the UPTU engineers have been found to be sig-nificantly better than the national average.

In a span of 10 years, the University has grown to be the biggest techno - managerial university in the entire world.

For the sake of administrative efficiency and academic excellence the University has been bifurcated into two halves. However, the spirit of excellence & aspiration to make a mark ingrained by the University in the youth of Uttar Pradesh would continue to flourish in times to come.

Connection between Business - Environment - Society In a churning global marketplace, understanding the fundamental connections between business, the environment, and society has become es-sential. The roles and responsibilities of business as a global force are becoming more urgent and complex, and concepts related to societal respon-sibility and sustainability are gaining recognition as essential elements in business management.

Need of Integrative Management Increasing complexity and interdependence re-quire new approaches. Companies need integra-tive management tools that help embed envi-ronmental, social, and governance concerns into their strategic thinking and daily operations. They need support as they internalize and integrate these issues into the core of businesses, engage in dialogue with stakeholders, and report their conduct. They require talented and ethical lead-ers who can not only advance organizational goals and fulfill legal and fiduciary obligations to share-holders, but who are also prepared to deal with the broader impact and potential of business as apositive global force in society.

Any meaningful and lasting change in the conduct of corporations towards societal re-sponsibility and sustainability must involve the institutions that most directly act as driv-ers of business behavior, especially academia.

Academic institutions help shape the attitudes and behavior of business leaders through business ed-ucation, research, management development pro-

grams, training, and other pervasive, but less tangi-ble, activities, such as the spread and advocacy of new values and ideas. Through these means, academic institutions have the potential to generate a wave of positive change, thereby helping to ensure a world where both enterprises and societies can flourish.

Decision MakingThe Management programmes help aspiring man-agers to become effective decision makers in their fields through upgradation of knowledge and managerial skills. The programme broadens the overall perspective of the students so that they can become catalysts for change. It develops concep-tual, interpersonal and management awareness for implementation of new structures and strate-gies. It also improves managerial effectiveness and prepares managers for more senior positions.

Conflict Resolution Management education trains candidates to re-solve conflicting business issues, asked to take management decisions and see the business ef-fects of such decisions, soon thereafter. Candi-dates learn to win and in seeking to win they im-bibe new forms of competitive behavior that are ideal for today’s highly chaotic business conditions.

The competition urges students to learn willingly and enhance the pace of learning. The excitement of managing a company from top downwards ensures that the learning elements are retained with candi-dates longer. Management education is specifically designed to develop the business decision-making skills of managers. Conflicting situations induce the students to take decisions under predetermined criteria. These situations closely resemble busi-

The M.B.A. course aims at providing inputs to the students relevant to the business, industry and trade so that they can function in different or-ganizations and face the challenges arising there from. The course not only aims at providing knowl-edge and skills in different areas of management, but also provides inputs necessary for the overall development of the personality of the students.

The structure of the Course is designed in a way that students have to study the core courses from different functional areas of management that are made compulsory. Later on, specializations are of-fered in functional areas where the students can opt for two specializations out of the five offered:

Marketing, Finance,

IT, HR

International Business & One Open SpecializationInsurance & Risk Management

Hospitality ManagementProject ManagementRural Management

Right from the beginning of the course, the focus is on providing relevant inputs through case discus-sion/ analysis, simulation games, note plays etc. keeping in mind the current business scenario.

Broadly, the course is of two years divided into four semesters, each semester having eight compulsory papers of 40 sessions each of one-hour duration. There is a system of dual specialization and an Open Specialization.

The students will have to opt for two functional areas for their specialization, having four papers (two in third semester and two in the fourth se-mester) from Specialization 1, three papers (two in third semester and one in fourth semester) from Specialization 2. Students will also have to

Master of Business Administration [MBA]

choose any one elective from the given four sub-jects as an open Specialization in fourth semester.Summer Training for 6/8 weeks is compul-sory for every student pursuing the course, which they have to undergo between sec-ond and third semester. Comprehensive viva and Research project are part of the course.

SUMMER TRAINING

At the end of second semester examination, every student of MBA has to undergo on-the-job practical training in any manufacturing, service or financial organization. The training will be of 6 to 8 weeks duration. The College/Institute gener-ally facilitate this compulsory training for students.

During the training, the student is expected to learn about the organization and analyse and suggest so-lutions of a live problem. The objective is to equip the student with the knowledge of actual function-ing of the organization and problems faced by them for exploring feasible solutions and suggestions.

During the course of training, the organiza-tion (where the student is undergoing training) will assign a problem/project to the student.

The student, after the completion of training will submit a report to the College/Institute, which will form part of third semester examination. However, the report must be submitted by the end of August during third semester so that it is evaluated well in time and third semester results are not delayed.

The report (based on training and the problem/project studied) prepared by the student will be known as Summer Training Project Report. The report should ordinarily be based on pri-mary data. It should reflect in depth study of micro problem, ordinarily assigned by the or-

PGDM as compared to other graduate level technical courses is far more comprehensive to build a holistic personality that is analytical, creative and result oriented. They also become much sought after due to their vast exposure to the real world of busi-ness through live projects, industry internship, case studies, interactions with business leaders, cross cultural learning through exchange programmes and of course the rigor of classroom learning.

It is not really a question of any difference in the concept between MBA and PGDM. Both relate to imparting as well as equipping students with the knowledge, skills and attitude to successfully man-age organisations, be it business or not-for-profit businesses. The universities both in India and elsewhere confer an MBA degree, while PGDM is awarded by autonomous B-schools

MBA Vs. PGDM

in India. It is the quality of learning that that makes up for the advantage. There are a few Indian Universities which produce outstanding MBAs much better than many autono-mous PGDMs, while there are excellent PGDMs starting from the IIMs and their likes who deserve all the credit to what Indian management gradu-ates mean today in India and abroad. On balance, PGDM carries an edge and is a synonym of supe-rior quality of management education in India.

Most of the top institutes have put in a mech-anism in place which ensures that the cur-riculum takes practical cases into account and teaches concepts which are new and in line with the requirements of the market place.

The principles and methods of instruction in Management Education are quite varied. However the following is the typical set of in-struments which shape a business manager.

Case method of instruction is adopted at almost all prestigious management colleges. Learning is predicated on informed and rigorous discussion as well as creative pedagogy. There is an immense focus on practice and emphasis is given on creat-ing a diverse and rich discussion environment.

For the industry, it does not matter whether the person is a PGDM or MBA as long as the curriculum and the quality of students are above par.

India is rocking and so is its business scene. An unprecedented growth rate of the econ-omy, growing entry of MNCs in India, rising mergers and acquisitions by Indian com-panies abroad and the fabulous growth re-corded by the service sector are all set to transform the business management scene.

Managing in India is thus poised to become tru-ly global-oriented and the managers will have to become adept in operating at global scale across multiple geographies, leading cross-cultural teams, redefining global standards and benchmarks and building global Indian brands. The premium will be enjoyed by those who will have acumen and capacity of dealing with uncertainty and unpredictability, and the ability to adapt their proven business models to other emerging economies successfully.

The Growth AreasLeadership, Organisational Behaviour and oth-er people related studies are emerging as the key areas of management. Today’s corporates need leaders who have a combination of techni-cal, accounting and people management skills.

In terms of growing areas, services sector man-agement is considered to be the next frontier of growth. The sector not only carries the poten-tial of a million jobs but also immense oppor-tunities for entrepreneurs and wealth creators.

Aspirants focusing on some of the follow-ing areas will carry an edge in terms of placement as well as faster rise to the top.

Hot Sectors in ManagementSome of these areas include: banking, fi-nancial services and insurance; retailing and

merchandising including mall management; management of IT/ ITES (KPO) organisations; health care and hospital management; hospi-tality and tourism management; real estate, infrastructure and construction management; management of education and training in-stitutions; management of rural develop-ment institutions; and management of NGOs.

Among the traditional areas of business greater focus will be needed to study specialised cours-es on mergers and acquisitions; turnaround management; management of Indian MNCs; cross cultural management; and environmen-tal management with business orientation.

Placement & SalariesA look at the placements of 2010, shows some signs of recovery. Spearheading this recovery, is an average 25 per cent upsurge in average domestic salaries across top rung B schools.

For almost all B-schools, 2009 had been a nightmare with gloomy placement scenario. Courtesy, the dipping global economic health, infested by the virus named “recession”.

This year’s placements are marked by a major shuffle in the sector wise prefer-ences. In a major shift of trends, PSUs which last year saw lion’s share of gradu-ates opting for it, took a dip this year.

2010 saw the return of Banking and Finance as the major recruiters although the numbers did not match to last year’s statistics but still they continued to be the ones to catch hold of majority of MBA graduates. Simultaneously, this year saw consulting firms hiring on an in-creased rate as compared to that of last year.

What is Counselling? Selecting the right specializationSelecting the appropriate college

The Superstition of College RankingUtilizing your UPTU Rank

The Counselling Procedure

All About

Counselling

Management Admission Guide 2010

20www.uptuwatch.com

What is Counselling ?

The word counselling literally means direction or helpful suggestions regard-ing a decision or future course of action.

In the context of engineering entrance examinations, the process of counselling involves the selection of the course of study and college depending on the rank secured.

Select the right course of study

according to your interests, inclinations &

career aspirations

Select the college suiting your personal

socio-economic-

locational constraints

After having qualified in the Uttar Pradesh State En-trance Examination [UPSEE] and secured a respect-able rank in the same, the next course of action is to select an appropriate course of study meeting your career aspirations & selecting the right college suiting your personal socio-economic parameters.

During counselling one has to fill in a number of options (course, college) which are sub-sequently allotted as per one’s rank. The higher the rank, the higher is the possibil-ity of landing up at your very first chosen options.

The selection of an appropriate course of study al-ways poses a dilemma to the students and even more to their parents. Whenever called upon, eve-ryone wants to make the best choice. Interestingly, what is best for me may not be best for others. This age-old wisdom has somehow got lost in the mod-ern day myths, stereotypes & superstitions which have little bearing on the successful advancement of one’s career.

Suggestive ProcessThe following is a suggestive process through which one can make an optimal use of one’s rank and land

up at the right course & college.

In the context of UPTU system, the affiliated colleges are more or less of the same genre. Almost all the major courses of study are available in all colleges. Therefore choosing the right course of study is of primary importance.

Eventually, colleges are merely a platform for learn-ing. The onus of reaping optimal dividends from the same certainly lies on the students to a great ex-tent.

Once the course of study has been selected, one can choose the right college from the list of colleges of-fering that course.

The profiles of all UPTU Colleges is compiled in PART C of this guide. Part D carries extensive featured pro-files of some select colleges on the parameters of Governance, Infrastructure, Intellectual Capital and Interface of the institution.

While selecting a college, a consideration should be given to the city of its location. It’s advisable to choose a college closer to your hometown as it bring in many indirect advantages and easens the burden on the purse of your parents.

Management Admission Guide 2010

The logic seems simple and the argument quite valid only that it’s a myth to think that a fair and simple methodology can be ap-plied to gauge the institutions. That is our su-perstition we have accepted as Vedic truth.

In India various magazines of repute come out with annual survey/ratings of the top colleges across the country. The engineering colleges surveyed are either clubbed into public and private col-leges or are ranked together. Rankings are based on subjectively perceived “quality” by method-ology which is not only complex but changes from year to year without informing the readers.

Rankings as a Marketing ToolCollege Rankings are consulted by prospective stu-dents and their parents before the admission proc-ess. These rankings then become a marketing tool for the institutions quoting their rank in each and every advertisement. With education becoming a boom-ing business and students being treated as custom-ers the usefulness and political correctness of col-lege rankings come under great scrutiny and doubt.Kevin Carey of Education Sector has argued that such a ranking system is merely a list of criteria that mirrors the superficial characteristics of elite colleges and universities. According to Carey, "The ranking system is deeply flawed. Instead of focusing on the fundamental issues of how well colleges and universities educate their students and how well

The Superstition of

College Ranking* Article published in UPTU WATCH April Issue

ICC has a rating system for the top Test teams, ODI teams based on their on-field performance. Similarly IPL teams can be rated based on their performance in each season. When teams and clubs can be rated then why not educational institutions?

they prepare them to be successful after college, the magazine’s rankings are almost entirely a func-tion of three factors: fame, wealth & exclusivity.”

Data Types: College Generated & Opinion PollsMost rankings rely on two types of data— data given by institutions that is accepted, often with-out a reliable validation process and data ob-tained from opinion polls in the name of 'ex-pert opinion’. With both components on shaky grounds, the use by the media groups of complex formulae with weights and indicators only helps to project a pseudo image of being 'scientific’ to outcomes that may be statistically irrelevant.

The Dichotomy: Reputation as a factor in rankingRankings are largely based on what can be measured rather than what is relevant and im-portant. Conversely, reputation is used too of-ten as a measure of academic quality in media ranking. Some media rankings give as much as 50% weight to reputation which is a very subjec-tive and inaccurate measure to denote quality.

Changing Ranking Formulae: Market Ploy or Scientific Need

Utilizing your UPTU RANK

The rank in any entrance examination is the ticket for a preferred entry. The better the rank, the more options and choices you have to choose from. A good rank is also a symbol of your academic pro-foundness.

In the bygone era, when the avenues for higher tech-nical education were meagre and limited, ranking in the entrance examination made a lot of difference.

However, with the wider expanse of the higher edu-cational system, rank is just one of the many crite-ria for selection of a particular course or college of study.

What does a rank in UPTU means? What is the meaning of rank in various cat-egories like General, Girls etc. ? The concept of rank in an entrance examination is fairly simple. The examination body, in our case the UPTU makes a single list of all students who have ap-peared in the examination and depending on their performance provides a merit list.

For example: An OBC girl having a rank in general (open) list as 20,000 and in OBC list as 4000 means that out of 20,000 general candidates 4000 are OBC and her rank in OBC category is 4000. Now, applying the girls quota, if her rank is 700, it means that out of 4000 OBC candidates there are 700 girls and her rank in OBC girls category is 700.

How rank is used for admissions during counselling.Every college participating in the counselling process for the intake of students divides its available seats for each quota as per state government rules. Now, these seats are filled as per the rank & preference of the candidates in that particular quota.

The CategoriesOP - Open - General Category - In this all categories fit in

FF - Dependents of Freedom Fighters from UP

GL - Girl Category

AF - Sons / Daughters of ‘defence personnel of UP-either retired (superannuated) or killed / disabled in action’ or ‘defence personnel posted in UP’

SC - Schedule Caste

BC - OBC Category

ST - ST Category

PH - Physically Challenged

* To know more about the categories, the benefits available to them, refer to the UPSEE-2010 Brochure and also to the Counselling Process Section in the subsequent pages.

Opening & Closing Ranks The opening & closing ranks in a particular stream of engineering/management/pharmacy, under various categories at a particular college is a mere indica-tion of the preferences & choices of the candidates within the confines of the opening & closing ranks in the past counsellings.

Preferences of the past are largely indicative & sug-gestive in nature and should not become your sole criteria is opting for a particular course or college just because someone else of similar ranks did so in the past.

The counselling procedure is divided in two phases:

Phase-I: Off-Campus On-Line Counselling [Schedule would be declared by UPTU]

Phase-II: On-Campus On-line Counselling [Schedule would be declared by UPTU]

Through computer screen, the counselees will have access to category-wise information regarding:

(a) Number of candidates with higher merit who would have already exercised their choices.

(b) Number of higher merit holders yet to exercise their choices.

(c) Current status of course-wise and institution-wise available seats.

The detailed procedure is described below.

Phase-I : Off-Campus On-Line Counselling 1. Soon after declaration of SEE- UPTU- 2010 results, candidates found eligible for counselling are required to exercise their initial choices of branches and institutions through Internet (www.seeuptu.nic.in) from places of their convenience. The candidates may contact the nearby Counselling Centres (CC) for availing the Internet facility free of charge.

2. A candidate has to log on to the website http://www.seeuptu.nic.in and click ‘off-campus’ counselling but-ton on the home page.

3. Login and password prompts will appear on the computer screen. Using the instructions given on the screen, candidates are to enter the login ID and password for which admit card would be required.

4. The procedure for exercising choices or seeking other information is menu driven. It guides the candidates through appropriate messages on the computer screen.

5. Information relating to institutions, disciplines (Engineering / Technology, Pharmacy, Architecture, Hotel Management, MBA and MCA, Bio-Tech, BFAD), branches (e.g. Electronics Engineering or Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering etc.) and categories (UPGE or UPSC or UPBC or UPST etc.) will be available through each relevant drop-down menu for the purpose of exercising choices as well as for a feel of their competitive standing for their preferred choices among the logged-in candidates.

6. The name of counselling centre will be displayed on computer screen during Phase-I.

7. The candidates are permitted, if they so desire, to change their choices, delete earlier choices and add new choices any number of times, based on the information which will appear on the computer screen. The candi-dates are free to consult their parents, teachers, friends and others for advice during Phase-I. The off-campus counselling will facilitate the selection of the most appropriate discipline, institution and branches / programme at candidates’ rank and in their categories for submitting their final choices during on-campus counselling.

8. Choices will be processed and indicative seat allocation will be put on the website at frequent intervals. The dates of next update of indicative seat allocation will be specified on the website.

9. OFF CAMPUS COUNSELLING IS ONLY A REHEARSAL.

Phase- II : Part I - On-Campus On-Line Counselling- First CounsellingEligible candidates will be required to report at only one counselling centre, which will be displayed on computer screen during Phase-I. They will have to stay there for two days. A list of counselling centres is also given in this section in the following pages.
