Were you ever curious of what our Township Supervisors do when they are not working their full time jobs? Well, I was. So I created a new page called, "Behind The Scenes." The Supervisors, who are always up for a good challenge, thankfully obliged my request. The idea is intended to give us a fun, serious or informational "snapshot" of what the township Supervisors do when they are "off the clock." Enjoy!

Sewer Rental Rates

Upper Merion Township recently

announced additional changes to the sewer rental

rate fees for 2014. Beginning with the semi-annual

bill mailed on July 1, 2014, which covers billing

for January-June 2014, residents will see an

across-the-board $18.00 rate increase reflected in

this billing.

In January, the Township Supervisors increased the sewer rates by $2.00 a quarter, which is $4.00

semi-annual, for budgetary purposes to fund capital maintenance issues at the township's two waste

treatment plants and collection system. In March, the Township Supervisors approved an additional rate

increase of $7.00 a quarter, which is $14.00 semi-annual, in the dedicated funding for extensive capital

projects at the township's two waste treatment plants and collection system that are constructed by the

Upper Merion Municipal Utility Authority. The township has not raised the dedicated funding amount for

the Upper Merion Municipal Utility Authority for several decades.

The Public Information Office offers a variety of ways to provide its residents, visitors and staff with information that will be helpful in managing their daily lives. This information is provided by the PIO so that everyone can familiarize and benefit from our township publications and more.

"Communication is Key"

1) UMGA-TV - Upper Merion's Government Access Television Channel has provided programming since 1996. This 24/7 community service channel is found on Verizon (Channel 33) and Comcast (Channel 22). Residents are able to advertise events within their neighborhoods on the channel's community Bulletin Board. These requests are enhanced with special graphics and broadcasted multiple times throughout the day. The Board of Supervisors meetings are televised LIVE and rebroadcasted until the next scheduled meeting. UMGA-TV produces several original programs. Our longer formatted magazine shows are produced, written, voiced, and edited by the township's TV staff and freelancers. Descriptions of these programs can be found on the website at www.umtownship.org under "Programming Schedule". NO DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION BUT PLEASE ALLOW AT LEAST THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE EVENT & A KILL DATE

2) TOWNSHIP WEBSITE - The township website (www.umtownship.org) archives all of our electronic and print publications. The News Flash section on the front page of the website is updated daily. If something is HOT, it will be posted immediately. The RSS feed allows information to simultaneously air on UMGA-TV through a "crawl" that appears at the bottom of the screen when a program is not being broadcast. NO DEADLINE: CAN BE POSTED ANYTIME. (The PIO reserves the right to warrant whether the information provided by the public should be posted on the website)

3) TOWNSHIP LINES - The Public Information Office produces a quarterly magazine called Township Lines, which is distributed to more than 8,500 residents. All information supplied internally is researched, written by the CIO, and edited by members of the township staff. Residents and staff are encouraged to supply content. All formatting and printing is outsourced but the CIO/PIA assists in designing the complete layout. We aim to deliver the publication on the first day of each season. For example: (Winter: December, 21) SUBMISSION DEADLINE: TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE END OF THE MONTH, PRIOR TO THE MONTH OF DISTRIBUTION, NO EXCEPTIONS

4) COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS - This monthly newsletter is mailed to more than 300 residents, for the civic and business leaders of Upper Merion Township. What would you like to see the Public Information Office offer? Please email us at [email protected]. I would appreciate your feedback. I am striving to keep readers engaged and well informed. Our new location is the former tax office, across from the Police Communication Center. TBD: The Public Information Office will debut during a soft launch opening for residents and staff. Don't Be ScammedThere has been an increase in telephone scams. The IRS will NEVER contact you by telephone so DO NOT give your credit card information to anyone over the phone. ALWAYS check your credit card company periodically for any suspicious activity on your card. The IRS will NEVER send someone to your residence to collect money. Trust your gut!

Lock Up!Theft from cars are occurring within the township, especially during the night. Vehicles should be locked at all times (even if it is parked in your driveway). REMEMBER to remove all valuables or lock them in the trunk. If you see anything that appears unusual, please call UMPD at 610-265-3232, or dial 911.

The Upper Mer ion Po l i ce Department has learned that solicitors from an energy company have recently implied that they were township employees hired by Upper Merion to review residents PECO bills. The township did not hire anyone for such a purpose. Please call UMPD (610-265-3232) if someone has come to your home using this deceitful soliciting technique.

Leaf Burning ProhibitedUpper Merion Township prohibits the burning of yard waste. The township has a Leaf Collection Program which occurs on specific dates during the fall. Call the Public Works Department at 610-265-2606 if you have any questions.

The Upper Merion Police Departmenthas launched a campaign that displays a poster titled,

We ask that this poster be placed at the entrance of your business as a reminder to your employees and visitors.

With hectic pre-workday routines, parents and caregivers can have a relapse in memory, become distracted and simply forget to

drop a child off at their childcare provider.

The Upper Merion Police Department hopes this campaignwill help to prevent another child from

being left in a car.

If you are interested in displayingthe UMPD campaign poster

at your place of business, please contact theCommunity Response Unit at 610-265-3232

or email [email protected].

Public Works

HELP US, HELP YOU!The arrival of cold weather means that firefighters will be in a constant battle with slippery roads, hidden hydrants, and frozen hose lines. Do your part to help keep your neighborhood safe by clearing hydrants of snow. A clear path on all four sides makes hydrants easier to locate and operate in an emergency.

Also, in snowy weather, please utilize off-street parking whenever possible. This allows better access for emergency vehicles and also allows the Department of Public Works to clear the roads more efficiently.

And never shovel snow into the street!
