Changing Lives, One Student at a Time

Your Gifts Make the Difference

Andrew J. Wenthe ’12Vice President for External Affairs

Richard AndresBoard of Trustees Member Chair, Advancement Committee

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, President Duffy, and the faculty and staff of Upper Iowa University, we are pleased to share the 2016 Donor Report as part of the Winter 2017 edition of The Bridge. As an institution established as a direct result of the philanthropic efforts of our founders, we provide this report as proof the spirit of giving still persists today. UIU benefited from over $4.1 million in contributions during this fiscal year, supporting our institution’s mission to provide accessible educational opportunities that inspire success and empower lives.

The Donor Report is created to demonstrate accountability to those who have chosen to support UIU with their charitable giving. People make decisions to give for a variety of reasons, and we are continually amazed not only by the generosity of our donors but in seeing their pleasure and pride as they witness the positive impact their gifts make on our students. By sharing this report with all UIU alumni, we hope that it will inspire others to consider a contribution and appreciate the difference a donation can have on the lives of those connected to UIU.

Highlighted throughout this report are a number of initiatives and priorities worthy of your support, including the Annual Fund, Dean’s Funds, student scholarships, and much more. Alumni can also make contributions to specific majors or programs, student enrichment and engagement activities, and any of our 16 Division II athletics programs. There are many causes worthy of your support, and you can learn more about these opportunities at uiu.edu/alumni.

Of all the information presented in this report, we are perhaps most excited by a story about the efforts of UIU’s recent graduates, the Class of 2016, as they immediately made their mark by bringing back an old tradition. The Class Gift campaign that was relaunched last spring resulted in gifts from more than 140 members of the Class of 2016. After match commitments from other donors, the total raised by this effort was over $9,000. We hope for even better participation among the Class of 2017! You will find information about your class’s fiscal year and lifetime giving near the end of this report.

We hope the information provided in this 2016 Donor Report will ignite enthusiasm and support. Should you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Institutional Advancement & Alumni Development using the information included on the back cover of the report. Your feedback is critical to our success. In addition, I invite you to review the alumni calendar of events on the inside back cover of The Bridge and consider finding some time to connect with us at an event near you. We would love to see you!

Thank you, and Go Peacocks!

A MESSAGE FROM UIU ADVANCEMENT

The UIU Annual Donor Club program proudly recognizes the generosity of individuals and organizations who provide an annual contribution that earns them membership in one of our six clubs. Each club offers a variety of benefits and VIP experiences that are exclusive to members only.

Donors may select the designation for their gift(s), and their club benefits may be enjoyed all year long. We are delighted with the outcome of this new initiative. Cumulative Donor Club giving for Fiscal Year 2016 (July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016) exceeded $4 million! Feedback from our members has also been overwhelmingly positive.

We are grateful for our Donor Club members and their philanthropic spirit toward our amazing institution. To learn more about the UIU Donor Club program, visit uiu.edu/annualgiving. The following pages highlight each of our FY 2016 club members.

As you can see, our Peacock family is scattered all over the country and world. That’s exactly why we pinpoint heavily populated alumni cities, and host events and other gatherings throughout the year. It’s been our pleasure in the last year to connect with alumni in Alexandria, Cedar Rapids, Charlotte, Chicago, Clearwater, Dallas, Denver, Des Moines, D.C., Fayette, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Kansas City, Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Orlando, San Mateo, Quad Cities, Sacramento, Sioux Falls, Tampa, and even Hong Kong and Malaysia!

These events have proved to reengage alums with their alma mater, provide professional development and networking opportunities, and create a fun opportunity to meet fellow Peacocks in their own neighborhoods. On the flip side, our staff returns to the office with inspiring new stories, great feedback and ideas, and oftentimes a special connection leading to a University contribution.

We extend a special thank you to leaders of our alumni chapters. Currently, UIU boasts three active chapters. The Tri-State Alumni Chapter region includes Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland and the D.C. area. The Florida Alumni Chapter is a statewide network and we also have an international chapter in Malaysia. Each have developed their own goals, which include alumni networking, UIU fundraising and even recruitment projects.

WANTED: Peacock Ambassadors To grow our outreach efforts, one new goal for the UIU Alumni Association is to identify at least one Peacock Ambassador for each U.S. state. Oftentimes, when our alums move to a new state, they reach out to ask for local resources and may have specific questions that we feel can best be answered by a local.

If you wish to be a Peacock Ambassador for your state of residence, please contact Brenda Luzum, director of alumni relations, stewardship and

communications at 563-425-5238 or [email protected]. We look forward to

your involvement!

Please note that your basic contact information will be made available on our website to ensure Peacock Ambassadors are easily accessible by fellow alumni.

The Upper Iowa University Annual Fund was built on the generosity of alumni, friends, parents, faculty and staff of the University. Last year, our Phonathon callers successfully raised more than $70,000 in unrestricted giving with the help of our generous 1,114 donors. This selfless act of giving is appreciated by our hardworking student callers, and we hope you will continue your ongoing support to your alma mater.

Each year, alumni participation rates figure into national rankings like U.S. News & World Report. When you give back, it reflects very highly on the degree you earn. No matter the size of your gift, when you contribute to UIU, you make an impact that reverberates for generations to come. Thank you not only for your gift but for taking the time to speak to our student callers. Thank you for answering our call in 2016.

For more information on how your gift can impact the Annual Fund, please contact the Director of Annual Giving Naomi Aziz at 563-425-5966 or [email protected].

Spring Phonathon Campaign Calling Dates Feb. 6 – April 27, 2017

Over $107,000 was raised at the 2016 President’s Ball in support of capital improvements, just one example of the ongoing support for Upper Iowa University and its mission to provide quality, student-centered educational experiences. Among the current priorities are the following fundraising efforts:

• UIU Emergency Student Aid Fund – Created in 2016, this endowment fund supports students facing crisis situations. Initiated by members of The Brotherhood, this noteworthy cause has already secured commitments over $25,000. With the continuing support of all alumni, The Brotherhood anticipates this fund will make a positive impact on the lives of current and future UIU students in need of financial assistance during moments of a crisis. Note: An article featuring The Brotherhood can be viewed in the 2016 winter edition of The Bridge.

• Military and Veterans Service Center (MVSC) – Located on the upper level of Garbee Hall, the Center provides a relaxing physical space for veterans and military-affiliated students to study and connect with one another. Assistance is also available to students who need help navigating resources and referrals. The center also features a pair of administrative offices, a conference room and a spacious lounge area. In addition to hiring a director for the MVSC, future expenses include the purchase of additional furnishings, artwork, flags and flagpoles. UIU’s Student Veterans Club was among 50 chapters nationwide to be awarded an Student Veterans of America/Home Depot Foundation Veteran Center initiative grant for 2016. The UIU chapter used the $9,100 to help establish the MVSC. Sustainable funds could be used toward lounge supplies, and unforeseen MVSC needs and expenses.

• Capital Improvement Fund – The Capital Improvement Fund supports infrastructure improvements, building renovation or construction, equipment and technology, and beautification efforts. Donor contributions not only support the needs at the residential campus, but can also be used to improve the ever-changing learning environment and student experience at all UIU locations.

Remember: No matter what you have chosen to support, and no matter the amount, your gift will make a lasting impression on our global University. To support these fundraising opportunities, please visit uiu.edu/give.

Upper Iowa provides me with a support system away from my family. I have been blessed by the love and support provided to me by everyone at UIU, and that is what makes

this University so special. I would not be able to attend UIU if not for the generous

donations made by Alumni. As a phonathon caller, I look forward every night to hearing all of the UIU stories and memories

shared by our Alumni. This job has humbled me and makes me incredibly grateful for all those who have attended UIU before me. I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful University and would not change it for the world. Go Peacocks!

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPSEndowment of a UIU scholarship allows a donor to leave his or her legacy by ensuring financial support to future generations of students.

You can establish an endowed scholarship at Upper Iowa University with a minimum gift of $25,000. The University carefully invests these funds in order to award annual scholarships to students who meet donor-advised scholarship criteria.

The Pam Whitmore Endowed Scholarship Fund for Student Teaching is one example of how Upper Iowa University’s endowment impacts the lives of UIU students every day. The award is presented annually to a student with a GPA of 3.75 or higher who will be student teaching beginning in the fall or spring semester of the next academic year. The scholarship will be given to a student majoring in education.

Pam Whitmore, UIU Class of 1965, taught for five years in Wisconsin Public Schools, 30 years with the Department of Defense Overseas Schools, and four years with Upper Iowa University as an assistant professor in the department of education. Pam supervised student teachers while at Upper Iowa and became one of their strongest supporters.

For more information on establishing a scholarship, contact the Vice President for External Affairs Andrew Wenthe at [email protected] or 563-425-5348.

roughout the years, graduating classes have given back to future Upper Iowa University (UIU) students through a Class Gi project. ese projects had faded in recent years, but the Class of 2016 successfully revived the Class Gi with a highly successful campaign beneting the University’s Annual Fund.

e 2016 Class Gi campaign provided Upper Iowa’s most recent alumni the opportunity to begin putting a stamp on their legacy at their alma mater. Over $9,100 was raised through gis by or in honor of over 130 students and matching funds from the UIU Board of Trustees.

At the same time, the Class of 2016 joined a long list of former graduating classes who have donated monies or memorial items to UIU. UIU archivist Janette Garcia reports that among the rst recorded class or memorial gis was a grandfather clock purchased and donated to the University by the Class of 1910. Now showcased in the President’s Oce on the main oor of Alexander-Dickman Hall, the clock was originally placed in the administrative oces then located on the second oor of the David B. Henderson Library.

Additional gis have included the installation of stone pillars and seats at the entrance of the former College Hall (Class of 1916), a 60-foot agpole (1917), $1,840 Endowment Fund campaign donation (1918), construction of Naylor’s Cove between Dorman Gymnasium and Baker-Hebron with white marble benches and shrubbery (1969), and two boulder monuments located on the west side of Alexander-Dickman Hall (1975).

University clubs and organizations have also contributed funds and items to UIU over the years. e most notable of those items may be the illuminated peacock sculpture in Dorman Gymnasium, donated by the 1963 Letterman’s Club.

Garcia arms that it is impossible to know the number of UIU students who have been positively impacted by the generosity of those who preceded them as the diversity of Class Gis makes it dicult to gauge. Some gis still stand as relics of past classes around Fayette Campus, while monetary gis are not always easy to track.

While noting that she continues to investigate the history behind these and similar donations, Garcia said, “I have been impressed by the value the graduates put into earning their Upper Iowa degree, and their desire to give back to the University and improve the lives of future students. Many of the gis were to improve the campus environment.”

e archivist noted that the entire senior class donated money to the aforementioned 1918 Endowment Campaign and then challenged the remaining classes to do the same. As an article from that time stated, “Above all don’t forget that an opportunity is open to you now to pledge yourselves to help in one of the grandest causes of mankind. You have the chance of making yourselves a little bigger and broader. Give something and feel that a part of Upper Iowa is your very own.”

However, even the relics are not immune to the erosion of time. Amid the archived articles previously published in e Collegian were complaints by students in both 1947 and 1964 that the grandfather clock chimed at the wrong times. With the help of Dr. Eugene Garbee in 1984, then President James Rocheleau was able to get the clock repaired. In other cases, rival classes are to blame. An engraved boulder donated by the Class of 1907 was originally placed by the Science Hall only to be allegedly stolen by members of the junior class, who buried it and refused to disclose its location. e boulder has never been found.

Class gis provided by alumni and friends of the University are key to future student success, and continued growth and prosperity. Persons wishing to establish a class gi or make a donation are reminded to call 563-425-5388 or email [email protected]. ose with information about previous class or club gis are invited to contact Garcia at [email protected] or call 563-425-5722.
