23.READING

Scotland is proud of its long tradition of education and learning. When you meet a Scot in England, the first thing he or she will tell you is how much better the schools are in Scotland than England.

Scotland does have its fine universities, St Andrew’s, Edinburgh and Glasgow, to name only three. All of the Scottish universities have a record of achievement in invention and discovery. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in his laboratory in Edinburgh. The modern car tyre was invented in Scotland, too, by John Dunlop. He was actually a vet who wanted to make his son’s bicycle more comfortable to ride. The roads we drive on, or rather the material the surface is made of was invented by another Scot, John McAdam. In fact it was Scottish politicians who made sure that the British drive on the left hand side of the road, more than 100 years before the car was invented.

Scots do not like to hear about the origin of their most famous product, whisky. That was invented in Ireland. There is one thing that makes the Irish drink a little different. They spell it whiskey.
