The main aim of the programme is to provide a useful, practical introduction to Healthcare Leadership to meets the needs of working healthcare professionals who want to strengthen their own performance or who want to assume a leadership position within a health care organization.

Upon program completion of the program students will be able to:

Develop and demonstrate leadership skillsExpand healthcare & clinical leadership skillsUse systems-based practice to understand the various impacts of social cultural, emotional, and economic, etc.) on health careDevelop and demonstrate interprofessional competenciesSuccessfully complete a scholarly project based on experiences

Designed for working professionals, graduates who are or want to be in mid-level management positions, the programme enables managers to strengthen the performance of employees who report to them. In addition, it provides an understanding of how their function serves the over-all goals of the healthcare organization they work for.

Participants are requested to attend at least 80% of the program sessions in order to be able to take part in the final examination. There will be a strict registration system for each session.

Participants who successfully pass (60% of the total mark) the examination will be awarded a Professional Diploma in Healthcare Leadership.

The Professional Diploma in Healthcare Leadership programme that provides students with an opportunity to enrich their knowledge and skills in the fast-growing field of healthcare. It provides curriculum in areas of general leadership such as interpersonal communication, team building and change strategies. It also provides specific curriculum in healthcare topics such as medical ethics and international medical law, regulation and policy, and healthcare finance and budgeting.

Different teaching methodologies are used according to course content and outcomes such as:- Traditional teaching methods (lectures – presentation), Problem based learning (PBL), Team- based learning (TBL), Laboratory practice, and Training application.

DESCRIPTION

The module describes a historical background on leadership and its evolution as an important independent new scientific discipline.

The module gives the participants insights into management and leadership role and practical strategies for carrying out the tasks of the role.

Leadership is a function of knowing yourself, having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues, and taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential. Also, it explains leadership as the ability to develop a vision that motivates others to move with a passion toward a common goal.

Also, differences between management with leadership is detailed. Further, It provides a brief overview of the more dominant or better known theories.

Effective strategic management is the management of an organization’s resources to achieve its goals and objectives.

It involves setting objectives, analyzing the competitive environment, analyzing the internal organization, evaluating strategies and ensuring that management rolls out the strategies across the organization. At its heart, effective strategic management involves identifying how the organization stacks up compared to its competitors and recognizing opportunities and threats facing an organization, whether they come from within the organization or from competitors. The module lays stress on healthcare industry.

Practical aspects of leadership such as policy-making, policy & procedure development for healthcare leaders are described in addition to developing an organizational chart for a hospital & a primary healthcare and developing practical leadership.

Furthermore, the significance of organisational culture in healthcare and particularly during a major change project such as accreditation will be explained. Accreditation will be a focal point of the module as a major workplace culture change.

This module explains healthcare accreditation as the practical side

of healthcare quality in addition to financial management & budgeting for healthcare leaders. Medical law and ethics for healthcare leaders will be discussed and critically explained.

Dr Howard Scott Podolsky is a prominent experienced American-trained, Board Certified Internal Medicine Consultant Physician who also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA in Management and Finance). Further, Dr Howard has Doctorate of Healthcare Law & Regulation from Saint Louis University, USA.

Dr Howard is a seasoned physician executive with over 20 years of combined clinical, academic, health law & leadership experience throughout all

aspects of healthcare continuum. He has an outstanding record of achievement and has held senior leading positions as the Group Chief of Staff, Group Chief Operating Officer, Chief Medical Officer and Healthcare Risk Management Executive in many prestigious world class internationally accredited healthcare organizations in the Middle East and throughout the United States. Dr. Podolsky also serves on the Board of Governors for the American College of Legal Medicine, the preeminent health-law organization in the United States. He has delivered state-of-the-art lectures and is a sought after speaker.

Dr Podolsky is teaching M.Sc students of Healthcare Management offered by Swiss Business School and currently a Professor Adjunct of King’s Centre for Professional Development.

DESCRIPTION

Emotional Intelligence (EI) & primal leadership for healthcare leaders are described. The ability to recognize and understand one’s emotions and skills at using this awareness to manage oneself and one’s relationship with others are discussed as important elements of success for a leader.

Culture, cultural intelligence and role of culture in healthcare and Action-centred Leadership (ACL) as an important leadership style where EI is practically applied will be discussed.

Further, team-building & team-working in healthcare and its relations to ACL will be detailed.

The module explains planning, organizing, directing and controlling the financial activities such as procure-ment and utilization of funds of the enterprise. Also, budgeting as the skill of making sure that spending is less than organisation’s earning and planning for both the short and long term will be discussed.

Further, clinical leadership as the ability to influence peers to act and enable clinical performance; providing peers with support and motivation; playing a role in enacting organizational strategic direction; challenging processes; and possessing the ability to drive and implement the vision of delivering safety in healthcare will be discussed. Additionally, clinical competency framework will be detailed.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS ARE PREREQUISITE TO REGISTER FOR THE PROGRAMME?Holders of a healthcare-related field with at least 2 years’ experience are eligible to register for the course.

IN ADDITION TO MY DEGREE IN HEALTCARE, WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO REGISTER FOR THE PROGRAM?Competence in English is a MUST as all lectures and workshops are in English

WHAT WILL I BE AWARDED AFTER SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM?After the lectures and training workshops, there will be a one hour written examination with the candi-dates who successfully complete it being awarded a ‘Professional Diploma in Healthcare leadership’ issued by American University, RAK Campus.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO BE TRAINED FOR BEFORE I GET THE PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA?The program is an intensive training program useful for working healthcare professionals. There are 36 hours of face-to-face training carried out over five full days, in addition to a one-day revision and workshop bringing the total length of the program to six days. For developing a relevant assignment for leadership of a healthcare institution, participants should develop a plan on their own time under supervision of a faculty Member.

HOW IS THE TRAINING PROGRAMME ORGANISED?There will be six days of lecture/training or workshops that will take place on a weekend day (Friday or Saturday).

Dr Jeffrey is a British-trained Laboratory Medicine and Clinical Pathologist and a Fellow of Britain’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences. After studying Laboratory Medicine and completing his fellowship training, he commenced his education in Leadership & Management and holds several qualifications in Leadership, Management. He is a Certified Total Quality Management Expert and also a graduate of Change Management from Cornwall.. Dr. Jeffrey has held senior academic and industry positions such as Assistant Professor, and Adjunct Professor in

British & American Universities teaching postgraduate students. He has served positions such as Assistant Professor Adjunct and Adjunct Professor and currently an Assistant Professor Adjunct at the UAE University College of Medicine & Health Sciences teaching Change Strategies in Healthcare.

In the healthcare industry he has worked as Consultant, Healthcare Quality Expert and Hospital Executive Director.
