U P L A N D T E R R A C E 1 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Upland Terrace Family, Spring break was the first week of April and I hope that you all were able to enjoy it as much as I did. It is always wonderful to spend time with family and friends and relieve some of the stress created from the day-to-day grind. I am confident that our students are coming back to school after the break refreshed and ready to tackle the remainder of the school year. The final few months are busy and fun. All students need to be on time and in their seats when the bell rings every morning. This is extremely important as we begin our end-of- year testing. Please help us by scheduling appointments and other events for after school hours. If you are going to be checking your student out early for any reason, notify the office in advance with a written note. We are going to be trying very hard to interrupt the classrooms as little as possible. We have recently received the initial enrollment projections for the 2013-2014 school year. We will soon be able to begin considering class placements for next year. If you would like to share your concern for your child’s placement for next year, please stop by the office and pick up a Placement Information Form. It is also available on our home page at www.uplandterraceelementary.we ebly.com . This form will allow you to share any information about your student that you feel will aid us in making the right placement choice for the coming school year. The Placement Information Forms are due in the office by April 26 th . Late forms will be extremely difficult to accommodate. Also, please notify the office of move-ins and move- outs as soon as you are able. This year’s Meet & Greet for incoming kindergarten students will be held on April 26 th from 1:45 to 2:45. We would like to know about all students who are not currently attending Upland, but will be of age to attend kindergarten next year. If you are aware of any prospective kindergarteners in our area who have not pre-registered for next year, please contact the school office. Students who participated in Advanced Learner Testing for the next school year will receive letters and test results in May. School district personnel were responsible for all testing and we will pass results along as soon as we receive them from the district office. As the weather begins to get warmer, I would like to remind all students and parents about our dress code at Upland Terrace. Students should be dressed appropriately for the weather. Flip flops and open-toed shoes are not recommended. This is no longer a rule, but a recommendation. We suggest proper footwear to keep all students safe on the playground as they run and get their exercise. Thanks to everyone for your effort and support to make Upland Terrace the most amazing place to be! Sincerely, Andy Carbaugh, Principal [email protected] We believe in fostering academic responsibility and achievement in all students in a safe learning environment that nurtures initiative, life skills, respect, and self-worth through responsible behavior, achievement, services, and character traits. THE PTA SCOOPSpring is here and is very busy during and after school with activities and programs. It also is the time for testing in each grade. Let's all stay reminded of the many ways our children are pulled and expected to perform. Please be patient with your child and also try to cooperate with the teachers as they too are expected to reach certain goals for the year. Thank You.

The Road To Success program will continue to run through the month of April, so keep up that great reading!

 2. Fine Arts Program(s):    At our last School Community Council meeting on March 8th, 2013, Mr. Carbaugh informed us as he was made aware of and confirmed that the Granite School Districts intentions to hire 30 Fine Arts Specialists have been put on hold due to funding issues.  We are being very cautious with this issue and want our communication to be factual and as timely as possible.  As soon as we have additional official communication from the Granite School district, we’ll share exactly what our options will be.  At this time, School Councils are currently on hold with this topic.

  3. 2013 – 2014 Upland Terrace Land Trust Plan:  Mr. Carbaugh has submitted our plan for the next school year.  Here are the highlights of what the budgeted Land Trust funds will be used for.      • Increased student reading level achievements through our

reading specialist and Professional Development for existing teachers

• Increased student math achievements through Math Lab / Tutoring and IXL

• New for next year we will introduce a Science achievement goal for the upper grades and we’re exploring supplemental programs at this time Continuing with our focus on Technology, we’re also exploring an iPad in every classroom

  4. School Community Council Housekeeping:   The next SCC meeting will be on Friday April 12th, 2013, 1:45pm, in the Media Center.  All meetings are open to the public and follow a pre-planned agenda lasting 1-hour.  Please contact any one of the following with questions or suggestions:

Andy Carbaugh – Principal ([email protected])

Joe Wood – Parent/Chairperson ([email protected])

Madhu Menon – Parent/Co-Chairperson  ([email protected]) Your School Community Council

ART NIGHT A HUGE SUCCESSArt Night was wonderful. Color and creativity filled the school as did energy and excitement. Thank you to Holly Brain and her crew in putting together a fun and creative night. Also thank you to all of you (and you know who you are) who helped out with these projects from the start. Whether it is Art Attack, helping our art specialist, firing, hanging art, placing labels or encouraging your child, it all helps work to allow our children think outside the box and celebrate their creations. Our volunteers at this school are so amazing!!
