STATEMENT

Dear Colleagues:

It is a great privilege, as well as a humbling experience, to be

nominated by the American Association of Pharmaceutical

Scientists as the next FIP Scientific Secretary and follow

esteemed pharmaceutical scientists who previously held

this important position within our organization.

Over the past years, I enjoyed active engagement within FIP

as a member of the Board of Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPS),

chair of the Formulation Design and Pharmaceutical

Technology SIG, co-chair of the FIP Programming

Committee, member of the 2014 and 2017 PSWC Planning

Committee and, most recently, as Vice President of BPS in

the FIP Bureau. These exceptional opportunities allowed me

to develop invaluable professional and personal relation-

ships with current leaders and staff members of FIP.

In addition, I was able to enhance my understanding and

appreciation of FIP’s governance structure. Considering the

diverse responsibilities of the Scientific Secretary, these

experiences represent unique assets predicted to enable

effective communication and collaborative problem solving

with all stakeholders of FIP.

As a European-trained pharmacist from Switzerland, I had

the opportunity to practice in various settings, including

community pharmacy, hospital, and pharmaceutical

industry. Combined with my 21 years of experience in

academic teaching and research at various U.S. colleges

of pharmacy, I am fortunate to understand and value

challenges facing practitioners and pharmaceutical

scientists in more than one geographical region. Further-

more, through my research activities funded by the Bill &

Melinda Gates Foundation, I obtained greater appreciation

for the special health care needs in developing countries.

I am committed to effectively apply those skills as Scientific

Secretary and actively contribute with personal integrity

and professional attitude to the future of this federation

serving pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists world-

wide. Specifically, I am dedicated to further integrate

meaningful scientific education through FIPEd into

contemporary training of pharmacists in order to providing

highest level of pharmaceutical care. Today, successful drug

development and safe drug utilization critically depend on

synergistic interactions between scientific communities

beyond the traditional scope of pharmaceutical sciences.

I foresee tremendous opportunities for growth of FIP in the

future by reaching out to those communities with the

objective to broaden the impact of contemporary science

in patient care. This includes augmenting the stature and

visibility of SIGs at FIP venues through expanded collabora-

tion with BPP on membership and programming. Critical to

success of this strategy is meaningful engagement of

students and young scientists interested in the scientific

aspects of modern drug development and safe drug

utilization within our organization. Considering the

multitude of interprofessional relationships within FIP,

this federation is uniquely positioned to explore innovative

concepts at the global scale to foster team-based

collaboration between scientists and practitioners that

effectively improve patient outcomes worldwide.

I am passionate about the future of pharmacy where

science-based decisions continue to improve patients’ lives

every day. Your confidence in my abilities to support FIP’s

mission and objectives as the next Scientific Secretary will

allow me to apply my skills and experiences for advancing

the profession at a global scale. Therefore, I would be deeply

honored to be selected for this position.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Giovanni M. Pauletti, PhD

Two roundtables will be held in Düsseldorf

before the FIP Council meeting, serving as a

conference tailored for leaders in pharmacy.

08:00 - 08:30

Registration and welcome coffee

08:30 - 08:45

Introduction to the roundtables: Dr Carmen Peña,

FIP President

08:45 - 10:15

First Roundtable: Collaborative practice to achieve

responsible use of medicines

The value of collaborative practice was recognised in 2009

by FIP through its reference paper, followed in 2010 by the

FIP Statement of Policy on Collaborative Pharmacy Practice.

Similar considerations have been given to the topic within

the World Health Professions Alliance through a joint state-

ment in 2013 and an award dedicated to interprofessional

collaborative practice (launched in 2015).

But how can we establish strong collaborative practice

between pharmacists and medical doctors? What are the

challenges encountered? This first roundtable will focus

exclusively on collaborative practice between medical

doctors and pharmacists, aiming at achieving “responsible

use of medicines”.

Moderator: Ema Paulino, FIP Professional Secretary

Panellists:

- Otmar Kloiber, Secretary General, World Medical

Association

- André Gariépy, Ministry of Justice, Office of the

Professions, Government of Quebec, Canada

- Teresa Leonardo Alves, International Policy Adviser,

La Revue Prescrire

- Andy Gray, FIP Vice President, South Africa

STAKEHOLDERS ROUNDTABLESMONDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 201508:30-12:30, Room 3

10:15 - 10:45

Coffee break

10:45 - 12:15

Second Roundtable: Responsible use of self-medication

The FIP/WHO Joint Guidelines on Good Pharmacy Practice

— Standards for Quality Services, adopted in 2011, contain

a description of the roles and functions of pharmacists,

including “Role 2: Provide effective medication therapy

management” and “Role 4, Function A: Disseminate

evaluated information about medicines and various aspects

of self-care”.

There are different pushes for the development of self-care

and self-medication, but how to ensure that the use of

such medicines is responsible? This second roundtable will

explore the possible contribution of pharmacists in

ensuring the responsible use of self-medication from the

different perspectives of different stakeholders.

Moderator: Helen Gordon, CEO of the Royal Pharmaceutical

Society, UK

Panellists:

- Jolanta Bilinska, President of the International Alliance of

Patients’ Organizations

- Sandra Carey, President, McCann Pharmacy Initiative

- Xavier Deau, President, World Medical Association

- Gerald Dziekan, Director General, World Self-Medication

Industry (WSMI)

FIP is the global platform for exchanging knowledge in the international arena of pharmacy. You get new ideas, learn about tomorrow’s trends and meet pharmacy leaders from all over the world.

But what about your successors? How are they trained, how can you connect them and make sure they are better equipped to influence the practice of tomorrow?

FIP welcomes young leaders and will help you to connect

them to the global network in pharmacy. Not only will they

benefit from knowledge gained during the congress

sessions, our First-timers’ Programme and the member

organisations’ presentations, but they will also be able to

connect to all different fields in pharmacy and network,

speaking to other leaders and learning from them, and last

but not least to gain some international exposure.

For a bright Future In Pharmacy, make sure your delegation

includes a young leader.
