This course will identify those practices that each employee needs to know to make Rady Children’s Hospital a safe place to work.

You will have a final assessment at the end of the course that will measure your comprehension of Infection Control in the Workplace. You must pass the test with a minimum score or 80% to receive credit for this course.

Did you know that there were 83 employee injuries reported in our organization in 2019? California State law requires Rady

Children’s Hospital to have an effective, written workplace injury and illness prevention program; which includes how the hospital detects and corrects unsafe and unhealthy work conditions, communicates issues that are easily understood and ensures that staff comply with safe work practices.

The Joint Commission (TJC) requires:

Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego (RCHSD) to have a patient falls prevention program

This program includes that all falls that result in moderate or severe injuries be reported.

Safe Medical Devices Act ◦ Electrical and malfunctioning medical device

◦ Reporting injury, illness, or death related to medical devices to the manufacturer and/or to the Food and Drug Administration

◦ Immediately remove equipment from service with all supplies attached and give to Biomed. Do not discharge patient from device.

Did you know that there were 4 FDA visits to RCHSD in2019 ? ◦ The Safe Medical Devices Act of 1990 requires reporting any

serious patient or employee injury, illness or death in which a medical device may have played a role to the manufacturer and/or the Food and Drug Administration. There has been a significant increase in reports of recalls for medications and supplies in FY19 Key for staff is to secure any equipment or supplies associated with any injury or failure and return to Biomed or Supply Chain Management. Always complete a Safety Report.

Did you know that OSHA visited our campus 1 in 2019 ? Did you know that RCHSD has an average of <1 hazardous spills a month? This is down from 2-3 a month. • OSHA requires employers to inform and train their employees on

the proper use and handling of hazardous chemicals and to provide a safe work environment.

• • A big focus for 2020 is handling hazardous pharmaceuticals

safely.

Did you know there were 9 HIC activations at RCHSD that were NOT drills? ◦ Activations were for power issues, loss of water,

flooding, loss of Information Technology! ◦ All hospitals have an emergency preparedness

plan. ◦ HICS is a flexible, accountability chain of

command plan that is designed to be used for emergency situations both in the hospital and in the community.

Did you know that 6-14 Code Gray emergencies are called every month at RCHSD?

Did you know these types of emergencies are getting more frequent?

Code Silver Training (Active Shooter) rolled out in 2016. Run, Hide, Fight are key actions to remember.

If you are aware of an emergency, dial 555555 and report the emergency. Off campus locations may call 911 depending on the event that is occurring.

Know your place of refuge and fire boundaries.

Did you know we pay a fine every time we have a false alarm and the fire department has to respond.

The most common cause of a false alarm is popcorn cooked by staff and the fine is $2000 each time!

Dangerous & reportable electrical issues

Poorly fitting or bent plugs

Frayed cords

Use of three prong adapters

Limit use of appliance and small equipment brought in from home per policy

Do a visual check of electrical equipment before you use it and do not use it if you see any electrical issues.

Plant operations management must safety check all non-medical equipment with an electrical plug

Biomed checks all medical equipment with a plug

Never bring in toaster ovens or portable heaters.

These devices are known to cause fires.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) serve as your instructions for use for any chemical used

◦ SDS can be accessed online

◦ Did you know that there are hazardous chemical being used on a daily basis here at RCHSD?

Employees can work safely with hazardous chemicals as long as the engineering administration and personal protective equipment controls are followed. Read and follow all information on the SDS for:

◦ Instructions for use

◦ How to clean up a hazardous chemical spill

◦ How to treat a chemical exposure

Every employee needs to be aware of their surroundings an be prepared to respond quickly to the red flags of potentially dangerous behaviors exhibited by: Angry customers Medically or mentally ill persons Disgruntled patients or parents Disgruntled employees or managers Criminals Domestic Violence

Did you know security responded to more than 25 high risk calls a month?

Did you know that 4-8 high risk families/patients/staff situations are monitored daily by social workers & security?

Every employee has the responsibility to be aware of co-worker, patient, family member or stranger behaviors and diffuse potentially violent situations before they escalate. Report any and all workplace violence concerns to your supervisor and to Security

It is important to always wear your badge visibly, above the waist.

Follow our access control policy. Do not let anyone in a secured door. Direct visitors to a staffed entrance to get a badge.
