Dear Doctors and Medical Professionals,

It is my privilege and pleasure to invite you to the biennial 8th Malaysian Congress on Menopause (MCOM) on 5th & 6th March 2011 (Saturday & Sunday) organized by the Malaysian Menopause Society (MMS) at Grand Dorsett Hotel in Subang Jaya, Selangor. The theme of this congress is “Updated Clinical Practice Recommendations for ‘Menopause & Andropause’ Therapy and Prevention”. The Malaysian Menopause Society would like your contribution to upgrade the care and management of menopause and andropause throughout the nation.

The latest most updated “Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) on Hormone Therapy during Menopause in Malaysian Women” will be presented during this congress. Doctors being very busy professionals may not have the time to labour through the entire CPG; hence, at this congress you will have the rare opportunity of getting a succinct presentation of the salient features of the CPG. So, doctors, this is an opportunity not to be missed!

Knowing how arduous a task it is to change the misperception of women who have been adversely affected by the WHI report, I feel it is timely to also focus on non-hormonal menopause therapies, rather than let women with menopausal symptoms suffer with no treatment at all. Hence, in this congress, details on non-HRT menopause therapies will also be emphasized.

According to the Asian Menopause Survey, 55% of Malaysian women seek treatment for menopause symptoms from General Practitioners rather than from Gynaecologists. This is amongst the reasons why the participation of General Practitioners at this 8th MCOM is of utmost importance. Besides, CME (CPD) points will be accredited to all doctors who attend this event.

Sadly, since the announcement of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) results in 2002, there has been certainly some difficulty in managing menopause women due to misinterpretation and overvaluation of data arising from studies aimed more at understanding the impact of hormone therapies in elderly women, than at understanding the needs of treatment and their impact on women in the menopausal transition.

The scientific community facing this unexpected situation has been able to perform new studies and re-elaborate the old ones to clarify these points; and now the 8th MCOM will take place with a new understanding of the biological event, an appraisal of the real difference between the symptomatic and non-symptomatic women, and hormone therapy initiated near menopause.

Almost all doctors are actually managing women in their menopausal years no matter what speciality they are in – general practitioners, gynaecologists, cardiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, psychiatrists, physicians, endocrinologists, urologists, neurologists, geriatricians etc. We, therefore, hope all doctors from their respective fields attend this 8th MCOM, regardless of their speciality.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the 8th MCOM.
