ENG 214 Second Year
Written
Composition:
English
LANGUAGE IN ACTION: Section 22 (Class #8720) & Section 24 (Class # 8722) | Instructor: Cabrera, A.
Looking for a college writing class that lets you decide what topics are relevant? Do you wish writing assignments
had more to do with life outside of class? In English 214.22 and 24, students decide what’s important enough to write
about, think about, and even do something about. Focus coursework on a social justice issue of your choice, and earn
a minimum of 20 optional community service learning hours. Whatever your interest – it has a social justice
component. See a problem, a need? English 214.22 and 24 will help you discover a solution, a course of action, with
the option of earning service learning credit as you do it.
ISSUES IN SOCIAL JUSTICE: Section 44 (Class #8764) | Instructor: Gero-Chen, G.
Section 66 (Class #8764) & Section 67 (Class #8765) | Instructor: Love, A.
Change the world. Take English 214, Issues in Social Justice. Work toward an equitable society through discussion,
writing, research and hands-on service in your community.
Concerned about prejudice and bigotry, poverty, homelessness, police violence? Want equal opportunity for all and
a better life for those of us who are seen as “other”?
In English 214, Issues in Social Justice, we will look at contemporary issues of social justice, through research and
writing, and the option of a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer work in an approved organization working toward
social justice. Service options may include helping low-income youth, homeless adults, and refugees as well as
working with the LGBT community, women, and people of color on social issues.
WRITING GREEN: Section 51 (Class #8749) & Section 55 (Class #8753) | Instructor: Schwab, J.
“Walk the walk” in Writing Green, English 214 and get experience volunteering in an approved environmental
organization. If you enjoy learning by doing, this could be the English 214 course for you. We’ll read, talk and write
about the environment—with the option of volunteering a minimum of 20 hours in an approved environmental
organization, on or off campus. Volunteer choices include recycling, animal welfare, organic food/diet, clean
air/water, transportation and more. Get involved!
THE FRAGILE SF BAY: Section 76 (Class #8995) & Section 77
(Class #8996) | Instructor: Haluza, H.
The San Francisco Bay, which is really an estuary, will be the focus for
these English 214 classes within the context of the historical and the
environmental. The San Francisco Bay, which is the fourth largest port in the
country, is 75% smaller than it once was and had more depth prior to the Gold
Rush and, if many had their way, the bay would not exist as it now does.
We live by the bay but how well do we really know it in all its variations? That
this class is a connection for the student to consciously and critically write with
regard to service learning, students are encouraged to select issues and ideas
that most interest them. The environmental can encompass business, science,
urban studies, engineering, etc. The historical will bring about an historical
consciousness, which can transfer to other disciplines. There will be at least
twenty (20) hours of community service apart from class time.
