An Intentional Minute...Stop and focus your attention for one INTENTIONAL MINUTE.

What is an Associate?

I love to look up words. As a teacher, I was always trying to get children to learn about the beginnings of words by studying their etymology or history. This week, I looked up the word “associate” to see what I could find. The word “associate” was first used in the 14th century. The Latin word is “associatus” and is derived from ad+sociare which means to join or companion. Our dictionary says that it means to come together, or to bring together in relationship. It is a noun and also a verb depending where you put

the accent. You might be thinking, “Where is she going with this?” Sometimes people ask us what our associate program is and why we have one. It is so wonderful to be able to say that our associates are companions on our journey to God. We come together to pray, to work and to share our faith. We build relationships based on our love of God and Saint Angela. We depend on each other for prayer and support. We give of ourselves. We share our time. We shareourtreasure. Giving is a special gift. A wise Chinese proverb says: “A bit of fragrance always clings to the hand that gives roses.” Joined together and sharing what we have is the best way to change the world. Let us associates join together, build relationships, serve others and pray for God’s blessings for all of us.

By Sister Amelia Stenger, OSU Director of Development

Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our fellow men throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger. Give them through our hands this day their daily bread, and by our understanding love, give peace and joy.

– Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata
