The State of the State Economy

The rising tide is finally lifting more boats thanks to what is now the longest economic expansion in US history.

The pace of economic growth has been slowing nationally

An initial growth boost fueled by tax cuts has faded and the business investment some expected has not materialized

The state economy appears to have stalled in Q3“In the third quarter of 2019, Massachusetts real gross domestic product declined at a 0.2 percent annualized rate according to MassBenchmarks, while U.S. real gross domestic product grew at a 1.9 percent rate according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).“

The BEA estimates the state grew at a 1.5 percent rate in the second quarter. The US grew at a 2.0 percent rate during the same period.

The economic outlook is for slow growth nationally and for evenslower growth in Massachusetts

Tariffs threaten the prospects for key state export sectors

“Tariffs are by far the most serious issue my company has faced in 40 years of business — much more important than health insurance costs, regulations, and finding workers.”
