What RDA is A new standard to replace AACR Designed for the digital world
– Instructions will be a Web tool– Instructions cover description of digital resources– Resulting records to be used in web environment
Broader scope– Includes ‘authorities’
Better coverage of resource types– Online resources, visual resources
What RDA isn’t Not a replacement for MARC21 or the ILMS
– Not an encoding standard or library system
Not a panacea for every ill afflicting the catalogue, but …– It will enable improved navigation of the catalogue
and improved catalogue displays (more organised, less cluttered)
Not (necessarily) simplified cataloguing, but ..– It will offer the potential of improved efficiency of data
creation & maintenance
