Stephen Foster cont.

Anatomy of an Upset... Colonial Colony could do no better than fifth in the2003 Stephen Foster and was off the board in his nexttwo starts as well before improving to be second in anoptional claimer at Woodbine in September. He wassecond again in a Keeneland allowance Oct. 8, butended the year with a fifth-place finish in an optionalevent in the slop at Churchill Downs Oct. 26. Thirdagainst similar company in his 2004 opener at FairGrounds Mar. 18, he was not disgraced when secondto Ten Most Wanted as an 18-1 shot in the Apr. 17 GIIINational Jockey Club H. at Hawthorne Park. The bayswitched to the turf for his latest and tired after press-ing the pace to finish fifth in a Churchill allowance May23. Completely ignored with the return to Grade I com-petition, the six-year-old gelding closed from last to geton even terms with Southern Image in the stretch andproved narrowly best. “To be honest, we were trying tohit the board with the horse,” trainer Walter Bindnersaid. “The owner has the mare, he has the full sister. There’s a lot of residual value for him, no matter what.We just decided that it was a short field and maybewe’d get lucky. We got real lucky.”

The Image of Consistency... Southern Image was sent off the 3-2 chalk and ac-quitted himself well, but had his winning streaksnapped at five. An allowance winner at Del Mar lastAugust, the dark bay came back after nearly fivemonths on the shelf to take the Dec. 26 GI Malibu S. at13-1. The colt was 3-1 when he captured the Jan. 24Sunshine Millions Classic, but was bet down to evenmoney for the Mar. 6 GI Santa Anita H. and made itfour in a row. The $300,000 OBSMAR juvenile took iton the road for the first time for his latest and added afifth victory in the May 14 GI Pimlico Special. He mayhave been beaten in the Foster, but it pays to remem-ber that Mineshaft also lost a tough one in the eventlast year, but went on to be named Horse of the Year.“The [July 10 GI Hollywood Gold Cup] is on the radar, but he’ll tell us,” trainer Mike Machowsky said.

Off the board in his four starts since taking the G1Deutschland Preis in July of 2003, Sabiango finally gotback on track with this front-running score. The chest-nut shipped to the U.S. after a fourth in a Group 1 atCologne last August and filled that spot again in theSept. 27 GI Turf Classic at Belmont Park. After runningfifth in the Oct. 19 GI Canadian International, he wasback on a plane, but tired after leading them throughthe first 10 furlongs of the Dec. 14 G1 Hong KongVase and ended up 14th. The six-year-old, making hisfirst start of the new season as a 13-1 outsider, ledthem along through pedestrian splits of :25.91, :50.68and 1:15.12. But he clicked off his next quarter in:23.27 and came home the final two furlongs in :23.13,holding off Bayamo to the wire. “We were going to lookfor a prep race for him, but our allowance races are justas tough as our stakes races sometimes, so I thought,‘why not take a shot?’” trainer Bob Baffert said.Click for the brisnet.com chart or the free brisnet.comcatalogue-style pedigree.

ATTRACTION ALL SET The Duke of Roxburghe’sunbeaten Attraction (GB) (Efisio {GB}) heads the 19fillies remaining in Friday’s G1 Coronation S. at RoyalAscot. Trainer Mark Johnston’s wife Dierdre reportedthat the English and Irish 1000 Guineas heroine is oncourse for the mile contest yesterday. “She went up tothe High Moor this morning and she went very well,”she said. “She'll have her last little spin on Mondaymorning just to put the finishing touches to her.” Sheadded, “She's a bit heavy. Since she came back fromIreland, she's put on so much weight, we've had to doa bit more work with her.” Attraction already beat themajority of her Ascot rivals in the Newmarket ClassicMay 2 and in The Curragh equivalent May 23. Amongthose set to reoppose are Cheveley Park Stud’s 1000Guineas fourth Red Bloom (GB) (Selkirk) and SheikhMohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s Irish 1000 Guin-eas third Illustrious Miss (Kingmambo). Godolphin havea team of four remaining, headed by Carry On Katie(Fasliyev), who was sixth behind Attraction atNewmarket, while William Haggas has supplementedthe Newmarket maiden winner Moon Dazzle(Kingmambo).

GREEN LIGHT FOR HAAFHD Sheikh Hamdan binRashid al Maktoum’s Haafhd (GB) (Alhaarth {Ire}) willrun in Tuesday’s G1 St James’s Palace S. at RoyalAscot after coming through his final serious workout inimpressive style. Despite fears surrounding the partici-pation of the G1 2000 Guineas winner in the mile con-test after he failed to impress in the morning earlier inthe week, he gave all the right signals as he workedunder Richard Hills Saturday. “He looked sharper, trav-eled better and quickened up really nicely,” commentedRacing Manager Angus Gold. “He goes for the StJames's Palace.” Gold also suggested that the Madid(Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}), unbeaten in two starts, couldcarry the Shadwell silks in Tuesday’s race, with a finaldecision to be made by his owner tomorrow.

GOLD CUP ATTRACTS 17 Mr Dinos (Ire) (DesertKing {Ire}) will face a maximum of 16 rivals when hedefends his crown in Thursday’s G1 Ascot Gold Cup.Among the five-year-old’s po-tential foes could be his G2Henry II S. conquerorPapineau (GB) (Singspiel {Ire}),one of a team of four still en-gaged by Godolphin. TheGodolphin contingent also in-cludes New South Wales (GB)(In the Wings {GB}), third inthe Henry II May 31; and last year’s G1 Coronation Cuprunner-up Highest (Ire) (Selkirk). Seamus Sheridan’sVinnie Roe (Ire) (Definite Article {GB}) will bid to go onebetter than two years ago, when he was beaten a neckby Peter Savill’s Royal Rebel (GB) (Robellino), who willrepresent the Mark Johnston stable. The WildensteinFamily has decided to run last year’s G1 Prix du Cadranand G1 Prix Royal-Oak victor Westerner (GB) (Danehill)in preference to the G3 Sagaro S. winner Risk Seeker(GB), while Susan Magnier’s G1 St Leger hero BrianBoru (GB) (Sadler’s Wells) may step up markedly in tripfor the marathon contest. Japan will be represented inthe Gold Cup for the first time with Chizu Yoshida’sIngrandire (Jpn) (White Muzzle {GB}), who booked histicket with a success in the G1 Tenno Sho at KyotoMay 2. His owner’s husband Teruya told the RacingPost, “If the going is good, and he is fit and well afterhis flight from Tokyo, the distance of 2 1/2 miles willbe in his favour and I think he will have a good chance. It is a magnificent meeting, so unique, and I am ex-tremely honored to have a runner.”

FIELD OF DREAMS Torrestrella (Ire) (Orpen), heroineof the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp, will be bidding to complete this elusive double, lastachieved by East of the Moon 10 years ago. Torrestrellaproved that she is highly effective at a mile when beat-ing Grey Lilas (Ire) (Danehill) by 1½ lengths to equal thestakes record in the Longchamp Classic. However, shehad stayed 1 1/8 miles well enough when winning theListed Prix Finlande at Longchamp previously Apr. 11and deserves another chance at staying a trip. GreyLilas, likely to improve with this added distance, repre-sents the Andre Fabre stable, which took this contestwith Lypharita (Fr) in 1985, Jolypha in 1992 and withNebraska Tornado 12 months ago. Ask for the Moon(Fr) (Dr Fong) had Asti (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) a neck backin second, with Agata (Fr) (Poliglote {GB}) third andOmetsz (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}) fifth, in the G1 PrixSaint-Alary at Longchamp May 23. That was anotherstep up the ladder for the smooth-traveling filly, havingtaken the G3 Prix Penelope at Saint-Cloud previouslyApr. 9. She bids to emulate Lacovia, Indian Skimmerand Zainta (Ire), all of whom completed the Saint-Alary-Prix de Diane double. This prize has gone overseas onlyonce since 1991, but the battle-hardened duo of Alex-ander Goldrun (Ire) (Gold Away {Ire}) and Menhoubah(Dixieland Band) have strong claims of ending thedrought. While the former was within a length of At-traction (GB) when second in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineasat The Curragh May 23, Menhoubah won the G1 Oaksd’Italia in comfortable fashion. Aidan O’Brien is repre-sented by G3 Lingfield Oaks Trial winner Baraka (Ire)(Danehill), who may need softer going. G3 PrixCleopatre scorer Steel Princess (Ire) (Danehill) andListed Prix Melisande winner Colony Band (DixielandBand) add further substance to a strong renewal.

MONMOUTH MOVES FORWARD WITH BC BIDBreeders’ Cup President D.G. Van Clief Jr. Friday in-formed Bruce Garland, senior vice president of the NewJersey Sports and Exposition Authority, that Breeders’Cup is prepared to negotiate a contract with the NJSEAto hold the 2007 World Thoroughbred Championship atMonmouth Park. “We will be working closely withBreeders’ Cup to ensure that there are no major obsta-cles to complete the contract,” Garland said. “If we aresuccessful, it would be wonderful for New Jersey rac-ing and the Mid-Atlantic region.” There are some con-cerns that Monmouth is too small a venue to handle theBreeders’ Cup crowd, but Monmouth Vice PresidentBob Kulina said yesterday, “Last year, we had 53,000for the Haskell. We’re pretty confident we can put on agreat show. Obviously we will have to add a lot ofseats, up to 25,000 seats, and we will have more din-ing rooms and pavilions behind the grandstand.” It isexpected that plans for 2007 will be finalized at thenext Breeders’ Cup meeting in September.
