IntroducRonSpor&ngMemoriesistheWorld's1stcharitydedicatedtoSportsReminiscence&PhysicalAc&vi&es,helpingtacklethreeofthelargestissuesfacinganageingpopula&on;Demen&a,Depression&Loneliness.Spor&ngMemoriesisaninnova&veapproachtosuppor&ngsomeofthemostvulnerableinsociety.5millionpeopleover75livealoneintheUK.850,000livewithdemen&a.Over40%ofolderpeopleincarehavedepressionyetover80%receivenotreatmentforit.Workingwithhostorganisa&onsanddeliverypartners,Spor&ngMemoriesgroupsareopentoallsportsfansovertheageof50.Thegroupsrunweeklyandarecommunitybased.Ac&vi&esincludereminiscingaboutwatchingorplayingsport,sharingstoriesanddiscussingcurrentspor&ngnewsandevents.Increasingly,thegroupsincludephysicalac&vitysessionsandthechancetotakepartinappropriateaccessiblesports.Thegroupsarenot&melimitedandaresustainedbyanamazingteamofvolunteerswhoensuregroupmemberscon&nuetobenefitfromaTendingeachweek,makingnewfriends,gainingconfidence,improvingtheirmentalwellbeingandbecomingmorephysicallyac&vethroughexerciseandsportsplayedatthegroupswiththeirpeers.OuryearinnumbersIn2017/18,withTheSpor&ngMemoriesFounda&onScotland,we’veworkedwithover300partnerorganisa&ons,trainingover250staffandvolunteerstosupportthe110free,weeklyspor&ngmemoriesgroupsthathavedeliveredover57,600individualaTendancesbyolderpeople.Weseeweekinweekoutover1,200peopleaTendingSpor&ngMemoriesgroups,allrunfreeofchargeandtheytellusthehugedifferencethegroupsmaketotheirlives.Wehavehadagreat12monthsbutknowwehaves&llonlyscratchedthesurfaceinreachingoutandsuppor&ngasmanyformerplayersandolderfansaswecan.MeasuringImpactResearchersatGlasgowCaledonianUniversityandLeedsBeckeTUniversityvisitedspor&ngmemoriesgroupstoevaluateimpactanddemonstratehowthisuniqueapproachisnotonlyaddressingissuesofisola&on,loneliness,memoryandcogni&on,butalsogeangthoselivingwithlongtermcondi&onssuchasdemen&a,physicallyac&veoncemore.ItwasthisevidencethathelpedaTractinvestmentbySportEnglandin2017fora3yearSpor&ngMemoriesprogrammethatwillbeevaluatedbytheCentreforDemen&aResearchatLeedsBeckeTUniversity.

InfluencingDuring2017weworkedwiththeBBCSportandourgroupmembersonthegroundbreakingBBC1prime&medocumentary,AlanShearer:Football,Demen&aandMe.ThedocumentaryfeaturedformerGrimsbyTownforwardMaTTeesandhisfamily.MaTwastheonlyformerplayerwithadiagnosisofdemen&atoappearonscreen.ShearervisitedMaTathomeinGrimsbytohearfromhiswifeMayandhisgrandsonsonwhatimpactdemen&ahashadonalltheirlivesandonMay'sviewsabouthergrandsons'playingfootball.ShearerthenaccompaniedMaTandMaytotheirlocalweeklySpor&ngMemoriesgroup,whichtheyhavebeenaTendingforthepast3years.Intheprogramme,Shearerwelcomedthenewresearchthathasbeencommissionedintofootball,concussionanddemen&a,butalsochallengedauthori&estosupportformerplayerslivingwiththedisease,throughini&a&veslikeSpor&ngMemories.Followingthevisittothegroup,theformerEnglandstrikerinterviewedourCo-Founder,TonyJameson-Allenabouttheissuesandtodiscussthenewguideforformerplayersdiagnosedwithdemen&athatTheSpor&ngMemoriesFounda&onproducedfortheProfessionalFootballers'Associa&on.SupporRngFormerFootballersTheguide,whichwaswriTenbyTheFounda&onandbytheCentreforDemen&aResearchatLeedsBeckeTUniversitywasmadeavailabletoallPFAmemberswhorequiredadviceonthecondi&on,itwassubsequentlymadeavailableasafreedownloadfromthePFAwebsite.BBCBreakfastandReutersShortlybeforetheBBCdocumentary,TheFounda&onfeaturedonBBCBreakfastand5LiveBreakfast,followingadona&onof90,000nega&vesofsomeofthegreatestmomentsinfootballandsportbyReuters.Containedwithinthecollec&onoficonicimageswere126neverseenbeforeimagesofPele,char&nghislifeonandoffthepitch.GuyMowbray,oneofTheFounda&on'spatronsappearedontheBBCBreakfastsofatotalkabouttheimages,whilstgroupmemberslivingwithdemen&aspokeonBBC5LivebreakfastaboutwhatSpor&ngMemoriesgroupsmeanttothemandwhypeopleshouldgetinvolved.Followingthesetwoitems,over1,000peoplecameforwardtoofferhelpandgetinvolved.ThePFAsupportedthepurchaseoftheequipment,includingscannersandsogwaretobeginthemammothtaskofdigi&singthewhilecollec&on,whichwhencompletedwillbeusedinourtherapeu&cworkandtocreatecommercialincometohelpsustainourwork.FormerEngland,ManCity,LeedsUnitedandSheffieldUnitedplayerDavidWhitejoinedtheprojectasambassador.
